A Closer Look At The Platinum Uniforms

Also, UK’s uniform will have some sort of graphic on the back of it similar to the Florida one below, but significantly less reptilian.

I like them. But I don’t get the point if several schools are wearing the same uniforms. Isn’t part of having cool uniforms is to be unique and different? Not Oregon or Maryland different, but just not identical to 4 other schools.

  34. UK Rifle >>>> WVU Rifle

    string music,

You are correct! UK is Blue and White, and these are colors associated with the UK “brand” ! It is not an age issue, it is a turf issue. Coke has paid good money to advertise the Coke “colors” and they would be foolish to market grey and red clothing just to make Nike happy. If Nike wants to make non UK color jerseys for sale to the public, I get that. I am not happy with PINK UK gear, but my niece loves pink, so I bought it for her. When UK goes away from the straight Blue and White, it loses “brand” identity every time they step on the floor and are seen by a TV audience. Oregon is backed by Phil Knight (the guy that started Nike) so it is understandable they bend to Mr. Knight / Nike wishes because they do not have an established reputation in sports AND they have a corporate master.

It is not a question of being old or young, it is a question of protecting the image of UK. When you change colors and styles to suit someone else, you are giving up that which is your own. I understand young kids think it is cool, but how many of them will be wearing a UK uniform next season? How many will care about what they wore in college when they have their own deal in the pros? How many kids that wear the uniform while at UK will be sitting in Rupp Arena game after game and year after year cheering on another season of CATS? What about another generation? UK is what it is because it is tradition, and Alabama is the same in football. If you want to sell that all down the road for a few extra bucks in the Nike coffers for a year, then do not wonder why the UK that was, is no more!

Schools like Alabama and Kentucky don’t need to change the uni’s because they are already at the top. IU running on the court, and their rude fans just shows how far they have fallen from where they once were. When UK is no longer the Blue and White, how long till we rush the floor when we win a game? Last time I checked, the jersey still says Kentucky and there is blue all over it. Who cares what the base of the jersey is, it’s still Kentucky and it still has blue and our checkered pattern. Blue and White this, and Blue and White that, why should it matter? Last time I checked, our official school colors as listed on NCAA are still the same, with silver and black as associate colors. In the past our jerseys have had silver trimming. It’s not a permanent jersey either, it’s for a reason. Only the ELITE programs are involved, be proud of what we have accomplished, not to mention we have the most stars on the back of our jerseys with 7. Calm down and cheer for our cats, it doesn’t matter if they play in blue tutus I’m still gonna cheer as loud as I can be.

For a few select games, I enjoy the fact that I’m not seeing the same old blue on blue with blue helmets, but instead black on black with either blue or white helmets. It was a good change from the normal, just look, we finally beat Tennessee didn’t we? And in this case with basketball, it’s somethin to get a bit more excited about, a fresh new look. It isn’t what Nike wants to do or sell, they don’t sell this jersey but instead a grey just like the ones we already have. This is about showing off your schools accomplishments of 7 titles, 1st to 2000 wins, and show we are platinum status when it comes to Basketball.

So stop your whining for a game, we still are blue and white. I didn’t hear any compliants when we honored Mr. Wildcat with black jerseys. We still returned back to blue and white. Again, it still says Kentucky, what we wear should be the least of your worries. We have opponents ready to knock us off the top spot again. Set back, put your screen on black and white and enjoy the game!

However, I’ve always thought that the elite programs (UK, UNC, KU, Duke, etc) should have unique uniforms to their own. I hate watching games and noticing that WVU has the same boilerplate uniform as us. We are UK, the best brand in college basketball, and we should enhance that brand by having uniforms that are solely ours. Just my opinion….

    Randy Lemaster,

If you are old school remember when Gtown was wearing the grey tshirts and how that turned out for UK? And yet you think it is cool for UK to wear grey now? Grey was for thugs then, and thugs still wear grey today. If we want to be clowns we can follow the Maryland example, and if we just want to be thugs why not just switch the colors and become the Miami football team. As several on here have pointed out, when you look like everybody else, what makes you stand out? If I wanted to look like the Gators in any way, shape, or form then why not not have our players look like that turd Noah?

The debate is not old school vs new school, it is really between a global corporation making money off our local brand, and protecting who we are as a state institution. If Nike was not making serious coin off of all this, we would not even be having this discussion.

For those that want “traditional” uniforms year in and year out (like IU),look at the current status of the following “traditional powers”:

Penn St. (football): fallen off over the last several years and may fall further now that the legend of Joe Pa is gone from the sidelines
Michigan (football): fallen off over the last several years
Indiana (basketball): fallen off over the last several years
UCLA (basketball): fallen off over the past 3 or 4 years
Notre Dame (football): fallen off over the past 8+ years

All of these programs wear the same, traditional uniforms, year in and year out (yes, I know Michigan and Notre Dame changed it this year for a game or two). Kids/Recruits these days are different. They want the newest technology, the newest look. Changing uniforms every couple years is what will draw the best recruits. Does tradition matter? Somewhat. But why not have the tradition of the program combined with the latest and greatest uniform design and technology.

Those jerseys are absolutely sick. BAD ASS. I will be buying those shorts the second they go on sale at Fayette Mall. Ive been showing these pics off to friends all day and EVERYBODY loves them. One of the best, if not the best, alternate jersey UK has ever had. Platinum with the Kentucky Blue. They look great. For anybody who has ever played sports…u know that feeling you get when you get brand new jerseys that look that good. You cant wait to play in them. You always get that feeling that your gonna play awesome because your new jerseys look awesome. Who cares what the base color is as long as the Kentucky Blue is on there? Buncha babies. I really cant wait to go buy those shorts.
