4 Star Potential UK Commitment Postpones Decision

The saga of Four Star Ohio Safety Mike Edwards has been an interesting one to follow. First came chatter this weekend that he may be ready to commit to Kentucky and soon (he was the player I was referring to when I tweeted that I had heard a commitment announcement could occur on Monday). Then on Monday morning, Edwards tweeted that his High School Coach didn’t want to let him commit because he didn’t feel he was ready, followed by Monday evening, when Edwards tweeted that he will announce a decision sometime before his high school season starts. According to Edwards, he wants to wait and allow his parents to visit the schools he is interested in with him and then announce his decision. But he also adds that the school he was going to commit to now is who he will commit to then…and that has to make Kentucky fans happy.

Edwards is a huge talent that some believe could become one of the top ranked players in the state of Ohio in the final round of evaluations. He has been recruited by everyone and if he ends up a Cat, it would be a huge get. However whether due to his High School coach or other factors, an announcement that seemed imminent this week looks to have been pushed back for at least some amount of time.

The difference in body language between those two pictures is noticeable…and understandable. Who really wants to be put in a Hoosier football jersey?

When my daughter signed her LOI her high school coaches had nothing to do with her decision. The high school coach is not going to college, is he?

Isn’t this basically the same thing that’s happening with Russ Smith and Rick Pitino? Russ and his family want him to go, Pitino is trying to talk him into changing his mind.

What’s important though is that Stoops continues to recruit at a higher level than the brand UK football. So if we win, 3-4 games next season, don’t worry about it too much, they’re still recruiting well, and will go after better talent than what our schedule shows. It takes time no doubt, but that’s how you have to build a better program. Excellent recruiting, and excellent coaching. Both of those categories I think UK has taken huge steps forward in compared to last season and this season. We’ll be good, give it time.

#15 if we win 3-4 games this season, which is the likely outcome, it remains to be seen if recruiting continues to go well. This staff’s recruiting is commendable, but on field coaching and team performance must improve a lot to continue the track of getting interest from higher level recruits. Hopefully that will happen, but remains to be seen.

Also, it is possible that this kid’s coach has the player’s best interests in mind by encouraging him to wait and take a few visits with his parents. Why would any kid commit so early. If he is truly a 3/4 star recruit, the offers will still be there later. Think of it this way, if an elite basketball recruit were interested inUK, but all of a sudden wanted to commit early to Auburn we would love to hear his HS coach say “slow down, go visit UK”..

UK will never be a winner in football – even with Stoops as the coach. His grave yard!!!
