Matt Elam is without a doubt one of the top defensive tackles in the 2014 recruiting class. With Rivals updating their rankings and bumping Elam from a 3-star to a 4-star player, the John Hardin product is at least a 4-star on every major recruiting outlet now. With that being said, 247Sports’ ranking stands out much further than any of the others, they have Elam as a 5-star prospect and the 10th best prospect in the entire nation, something they addressed in their “Industry Outliers” article earlier today.
Here’s what they had to say about Mr. Elam:
Matt Elam, DT, Elizabethtown (Ky.) John Hardin
247Sports Rank: 10 | 247Composite Rank: 140
247Sports analysis: There is a reason that Elam, despite playing limited competition in Kentucky, has jetted up the recruiting boards of some of the biggest name programs in the country. I’ve had a chance to watch Elam work out and this kid is massive by anyone’s standards but what makes him special is that his high school coaches rave about his motor and intensity. When you combine that with his natural strength, he’s the “zero technique” that every 3-4 defensive coordinator has been dreaming of. – Barton Simmons
Despite Kentucky now running the 4-3 defense, Stoops and Co. have made Elam one of their top (if not biggest) targets to fill out the remainder of the class. With a 6’6 350lb. frame and an offer sheet that also includes Alabama, Ohio State, Tennessee, Louisville, and Notre Dame, its easy to see why. The idea that a Kentucky hat could be the one that is removed from that table and placed on Elam’s head at the Army All-American Game in January is absolutely incredible.
