2013’s Jimmie Taylor has UK in his Final Five

Jimmie Taylor, a 6’10 center in the class of 2013, has narrowed down his college choices, and UK has made the cut. According to Ben Roberts of Next Cats, Taylor will also consider Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Alabama (Taylor lives in Greensboro, AL). Kentucky is the only school that has not made Taylor an offer, and he plans on visiting Lexington, Vanderbilt, and Georgetown in the fall.

ESPN rates Taylor as 19th in his class, and like Anthony Davis and now Nerlens Noel, Taylor is considered an effective shot-blocker with great length and the ability to impact a game without necessarily scoring the most points (see also: Anthony Davis in the national championship game).  At 210 lbs, conventional wisdom says he’s a little skinny to be a dominant center, but we who have seen Anthony Davis play in person know better. When describing Taylor, ESPN also uses the phrase “he rebounds the ball with an attitude,” which I can only assume means that he gives a sassy snap of his fingers after hauling one in.

Looking at his list of schools, it seems obvious the Taylor wants to play basketball in the SEC. With Nerlens Noel already expected to leave after one year, Taylor seems a natural continuation in Calipari’s latest line of shot-blocking centers. However, Calipari will need to step his game up to battle Alabama’s home court advantage in the recruitment of Taylor. Cal has had a lot of success recruiting players right out from under Alabama’s nose- DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe- and Jimmie Taylor would be a great get for the class of 2013.

Here’s your requisite highlights video. Let’s get him.

Kid is #30 rivals ranking. Do we always have to put the best ranking no matter which recruiting service it is? I think the class of 2013 we will have all top 15 kids. Just by the video the kid looks a step down from top talent.

5, we have a verbal from Derek Willis already, who may take one away from a higher ranked player. Second, who cares what the racial makeup of the team is? Are you that stupid?

Kid would fit in well giving backup to All-SEC 1st team starting center Willie Cauley while learning from Kyle and Julius heady play and getting good practice minutes going up against Derek. He will certainly benefit from his first season while playing with strong willed dominating players Jabari and Troy coupled with freak athletes exemplified in the James Aaron and Andrew, before leading Kentucky into the 2014 season with the assured superstar Wiggins.

I live in Greensboro, AL where I serve with the Teach for America program. Although I am at a rival high school down the road, some of my closest friends teach Jimmie. There is a great deal of talent in this region, and Jimmie is one of the best. Nevertheless it is a little premature to throw Jimmie into the same category as Davis or Noel. I’ve been watching Jimmie for two years now and although he has flashes of brilliance, he can completely disappear for long periods of a game with no production added to the stat line. Instead, he relies on his dominating figure posted in the center of the court to impact the game and affect shots. In college, however, he will lose this intimidation factor due to playing against higher level talent. Greensboro HS recently won the 3A state championship for the second year in a row, but remember Jimmie is surrounded by incredible players that could also play D1. Jimmie is a very bright student and cares a lot about his education so don’t count out more academic institutions such as Vandy, Georgetown, or even a school not in this top-5 that could make a late push (Duke). He is well aware of his skinniness and has been working religiously after school with strength training coaches to bulk-up. Get this kid, but he has a long way to go.

#4 They listed Cousins at 6’9 240 lbs forever. Don’t trust those rankings.

Once Evan Daniels started cranking out the rankings at, Rivals really fell off. They never even updated their 2012 rankings when Jarnell Stokes reclassified. For basketball rankings the last 2 years, is the best source.

Don’t ever downgrade a young player by what you see in him in his 9th & 10th grade. Look what happened to Davis. Coach Cal will make a good decision on who he wants, just like he did on Shaz, He knew what baggage came with Shaz and that is why he didn’t go Hard after him. I may be wrong but don’t think so, UCLA will be a bust this coming year.
