1998 Godzilla’s Saturday News and Views

With all the ‘fancy’ special FX and showy high budget movies these days, sometimes it is nice to sit back and enjoy the American Classics like the 1998 Godzilla. While we were all left frustrated walking out of the theatre in 1998, I feel like this movie has grown on all Americans after watching it on late night reruns on cable T.V. over the last 16 years.  Besides, who can hate on a movie that stars America’s sweetheart, Matthew Broderick. If you are like me, you will protest the new 2014 version and instead opt to watch this American Classic in the comfort of your living room. However, if you are also like me, you probably have severe motion sickness and can’t go to see awesome movies like that without puking, anyways.

Anyways, on to today’s news and views.

The NBA combine went well for Kentucky

Julius Randle measured a 35.5” on his max vertical. He tweaked his ankle a little during the lane agility drills, but he looks to be okay. ESPN’s Chad Ford compared James Yong to Ray Allen and Bradley Beal. Young isn’t competing in drills, but that hasn’t stopped ESPN’s Chad Ford from giving him high praises.

“There was a lot of pressure on him to be the primary perimeter shooter on this team,” Ford said. “Kentucky, if they had a weakness this year, it’s that they didn’t really have great perimeter shooters on this team, which forced him to take a lot of shots that weren’t ideal shots or within rhythm.  He won’t have to do that at the next level at the NBA. So when you combine size with what most scouts see in that form and see a guy who can be a 40 percent or higher 3-point shooter at the next level. Good athlete, not elite athletic, but good athlete.”

Ex-UGA coach Donnan not guilty

Ex-UGA (and Marshall University) coach Jim Donnan was found not guilty in $80 million Ponzi scheme trial. I am sure this is thanks to the beautiful (most positively sober) testimony of Billy G….. Donnan faced 42 counts including conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering, along with his business partner Gregory Crabtree.

Wes Welker was overpaid

Welker cashed in $57,193.90 in tickets at the Kentucky Derby and was seen passing our hundreds to random strangers on his way to his car. Now Churchill is asking for 14 grand back saying he was overpaid at the window. They cited an overpayment due to “a tote machine malfunction”. Welker’s response, in summary, was ‘you snooze, you lose.’

Here is the letter they sent originally.

Now Churchill says it was all a big mistake and they will not be asking for the money back.

Geek the Centre College python is missing

I do not understand why everyone is so calm about this, but heads up to Danville. There is a very large python loose at Centre College. Students have received emails informing them that the school’s beloved Ball Python is missing. I am not saying the broke college students need to go out and find him, but I will say there is now a $200 reward for his safe return.

Dickie V makes a way to early prediction

On the KSR radio show Friday, Dick Vitale took a break from his annual gala in Sarasota this weekend to call in. He said that he believes UK is in the running for a Final Four run once again and said that UK isn’t a lock to win it all in 2014-15 because anything can happen in a one-game scenario, but “Kentucky will be a lock to be in contention for the title.”

Dick Vitale kept his $250K promise

On the show this morning, Dickie V said he was raising $250K for cancer research in honor of Lacey Holsworth, a little girl who recently passed away after battling cancer. Lacey spent a lot of time with the Michigan State and Adreian Payne even considered her to be family.

Dickie V tweeted he had met his goal right before the gala.

Robert Mathis has a bad day

The Colts linebacker will serve a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy. He quickly released a statement with an explanation we haven’t heard before. He was taking a fertility drug to help conceive a child. He asked for the NFL to go easy on him since he asked his doctor if it would present a problem for NFL drug testing, however they didn’t budge.

Now here’s this 1998 Godzilla Official Trailer to start you day with the right amount of cheese.

The 1998 Godzilla is one of the worst movies I ever seen. The acting was awful. The special effects looked dated. And on top of that, That was not Godzilla. Godzilla is representation of Nuclear bomb. He is punishment for the arrogance of mankind.

1998 Gojira gets a bad rap.

That being said, I just saw the new one tonight and it was pretty epic.

Edison Volquez used the fertility drug excuse when was pitching for the Reds. So it isn’t a new one.

The new Godzilla movie is awesome. As a life-long Godzilla fan (I love the black & white movies and even the cheezy 70’s ones), they did a really good job with this new movie. The ’98 movie was an abomination. It did not remotely look like Godzilla, and it laid f*%#ing eggs!!! It was an entertaining movie, but I could make a more representative Godzilla movie with a Godzilla toy and Hot Wheels cars.

I hope a underdog horse from Kentucky wins the Preakness on Saturday instead of California Chrome.

I also want to say congratulations to the UK Women’s softball team in their 2-0 win over Ohio University tonight in the NCAA Tournament Softball Regional under the bright lights on Alumni Drive.

Why didn’t they ask me to do the song for the new Godzilla? I have another Led Zeppelin song to ruin

It was puff daddy and jimmy page on that one. I’m a big led fan and I actually liked the puff and page version.

Mothra is our allied friend and protector. As a youngster a tear came to my eye when her and Godzilla squashed their monster sized beef.

Easily the most esoteric of all the Godzilla films featuring an erudite commentary on the nuclear age and the folly of man the 1969 Marv Newland film “Bambi Meets Godzilla” is compelling, provocative and haunting. Not your ordinary monster flick it is a cerebral tapestry that somehow still evokes a visceral reaction from viewers of any age. Stark? Absolutely. Lush? Without a doubt. Contrasts found only at the zenith of artistry. The perfect film? This longtime moviegoer says yes.

The 1998 Godzilla is the movie equivalent of a california roll: take a Japanese idea, crap all over it, and repackage it for the American palate. 😀

Btw Bambi Meets Godzilla is an instant classic.

Using “broke college student” and Centre college in the same sentence is definitely an oxymoron. With attendance costs at $45K per year, there aren’t many students there living on Raman noodles and peanut butter and crackers.

Why no reporting on James Young’s combine? His max vertical was the same as Randle’s while his standing vert was one inch shorter. Also Russ Smith isn’t even 6′ confirming our suspicions lol.

Which makes Russ’s dunks on Randle more impressive. He put a top 5 pick on 2 posters.

I would expect a senior like Russ to do that to a freshman. Cards fans are obsessed with that dunk but all I remember is UK winning both games. And Russ’ last dunk attempt of his career which was hilarious

Yes it does make that dunk more impressive, it also makes a pro career pretty much impossible so you may want to hang on to that memory. But back to my main point, did we disown Young or was his combine not reported because it was less than stellar?

hey…let’s take Godzilla and make him appear more “Jurassic Park”, get Mathew Broderick to play a Greek guy (chuckle) and have a group of French Special Forces (double chuckle) fight the bipedal lizard that looks more like a JP Raptor…then, on top of it, we’ll have Bob Dylan’s son cover David Bowie’s “Heroes” (poorly by the way) and make the whole experience for the audience feel like they had been chosen for medical experiments (seriously, I felt like Malcom McDowell in “A Clockwork Orange” getting eye drops)…I then gave the film a 2nd chance once it hit cable…nope…I’d rather get a sunburn on my genitalia than watch that drivel a 3rd time…now, where did I leave my sunscreen
