BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: The Unwritten Rules of Being a UK Fan

Not to bring up arguments of the past but one of the main reasons that I dislike baseball is this idea that it is a gentleman’s game, with all of these unwritten rules on how the game should be played.  We saw this last weekend when Ryan Dempster threw 4 straight pitches at Alex Rodriguez because the “unwritten rules” of baseball say when a guy cheats the game, plunk him.  Because throwing a fastball into a guy’s back is totally not dangerous and an appropriate reaction to steroid use.  All those “unwritten rules” actually do is separate the fans from the players because fans don’t know, don’t care, and don’t respect those goofy unwritten rules.  What annoys me most about the unwritten rules of baseball are the fact that most of them revolve around the fact that players are “owed” something.  A pitcher with a no-hitter is “owed” that a player can’t bunt.

But, I digress.  The reason I rant above is that I wonder if you think being a UK fan has its unwritten rules.  Things that you just don’t do or say.  Things that if you do, you deserve a 95mph fastball to the spine.  I racked my brain this morning and came up with these:

1. Never say a negative word about The Unforgettables

2. Never say a positive word about Joker Phillips or Billy Gillispie

3. Rupp Arena is the best environment for a college basketball game

4. Never ever cheer for Louisville (unless one of their guys breaks his leg)

5. Prettiest girls in the country are in the SEC.  Fact.

6. Football never, ever takes priority over basketball.  Ever.

7. BTI sucks.  Always.

Those are 7 that came to my mind.  What would be your additional unwritten rules?

    I only disagree with:
    2. (Joker did play at UK and recruited well for UK before being a head coach)
    3. That isn’t necessarily true (unbias)
    6. Doesn’t have to be true.

    I only agree with 4,5, & 7.

Farmer sucks, Joker was a good guy, Rupp isn’t always the best environment, and football takes priority until about mid November. Dig it!!

    BTI Does Suck.

Only one I have an issue with is number 2. Joker may not have done a great job here, but comparing him to Gillispie is a little harsh. They are on two completely different levels here. Unless you mean that they have over shadowed by the me who took over their job, then that I would agree. Joker sub par career but not terrible here, seems to he a nice guy. Gillispie terrible person and was bad for Us. Huge difference.

First off, hitting a guy who “cheats” isnt an unwritten rule.

Secondly, if you never played, then dont write about unwritten rules in baseball.

Agree with #1 except with rule 3.
UK will never be a “Football” school… We can be BOTH!

    Would like to add:
    8. A nice word shall never be spoken of that pompous A-hole Robert Montgomery Knight.
    9. No evil shall be spoken of the following: Adolf Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Jamal Mashburn, Tim Couch (list to be added if necessary)
    10. Always keep the many national championships of our cheerleading team in your back pocket when defending the awesomeness of UK!

Why is Joker Phillips on this list? I think the majority of (rational) fans have nothing but respect for Joker. Was he the man for the job? Absolutely not. But at least in my UK circle of friends, no one even has a bit of bad blood for Joker. He is a Cat for life…. Poor choice BTI, but I expect that from you.

6 – I totally agree with your rule. In fact I think its the best unwrittin rule that a big blue fan could ever have!!! I am an active duty Air Force member and this rule has helped me find new friends all around the world!!! for instance, I was deployed to Saudi Arabia in ’07 and I was playing softball on base. I was pitching and there was an older gentleman from the other team hitting. He had a UK hat on so I ask him after the game where he was from. Wouldnt ya know it, same town as me (Harlan). In fact, this guy grew up on the same street in Fairview with my mom and dad! It was amazing to meet this guy in Saudi Arabia, and all because he had a UK hat on!

Speak for yourself on 6. I don’t know why we have to say shit like that on here. We have great support for football (many whom like it more than basketball due to our entitled fans). All it does is give opposing fans and coaches validation on their claims to recruits that they won’t be loved here. Just shut up with that stuff…Unnecessary!

BTI does suck (example #29420402: this post). Rupp, unfortunately, is not the best environment for a college basketball game. Anyone who has been to Allen Fieldhouse knows this.

6 is totally wrong. Football is a better sport than basketball. I love UK basketball but dont really care about most other teams, unless then are playing UK, are competing for a better ranking than UK, or have some sort of tie in with UK. I can watch just about any college or NFL football game. If Stoops can start winning here then there will be alot of people surprised at how quickly winning UK football will supplant UK basketball here in KY.

Bear Bryant would’ve ended up at Alabama regardless of what we gave him. His direct quote was “When mama calls, I come runnin’.” The Cadillac was to honor Rupp’s tenure at UK up until that point. He had just won his third title in 4 years. And, Bill Parcells would’ve gone to the Cowboys over ANY college job.

BTI must have had a late night out. A stat-less post? I almost cried. This is a good idea for a post, and you didn’t even have to dig up the over-under on player with high offensive rebounding percentages in the 1st half of home games during non-conference play.

However, as always, your offerings fail. #1 and #2 are wrong, and #5 is not specific to UK and has nothing to do with an unwritten rule. Sloppy.

But #7 is the best thing you’ve ever written.

As multiple posters have already said while Joker did not have the success we all wanted him to have that does not put him in the same boat as BCG.

I think most can agree that we all were hoping that Joker would have worked out as a Head Coach and been successful because with being a UK Alum he probably would have stayed here. While Stoops has had a great amount of success on the recruiting trail and all indications point towards success on the football field in the future I am not as positive that he will stick at UK if he does have the level of success I want (think Georgia Football). If Stoops has success you will soon hear the rumblings in the media of other “big name” programs coming after Stoops just like we have seen with Charlie Strong. Now of course this is all speculation and getting way ahead of myself but if this does happen I do find solace in the fact that Neal Brown would most likely be the next HC of UK but there would be similarities between Neal’s potential hire as HC and Joker’s.

    2. Disagree – Joker tried it his way. Didn’t work, he is gone. but still a Cat.

    4. Disagree, even if a guy breaks his leg, don’t cheer for them.

Here are the ones I’ve noticed (I don’t agree/disagree with any/all of them)

    – You cannot be friends with a fan of another team
    – You cannot say “U of K”
    – Tim Couch was a success story no matter what
    – You have to like Rich Brooks
    – You either hate Tubby or love him, no in between
    – You can never wear red, orange or any other color other than blue. Ever! Even in the offseason
    – You can’t be a die hard fan if you didn’t attend UK
    – It’s ok to cheer for Tebow/Peyton Manning now (I STRONGLY disagree with this one!!)
    – UK fans should not have tattoos or wear flat billed hats
    – If at any point in the season you say “we’re not that good this year” you are a traitor
    – You have to cheer for other SEC teams when they’re not playing UK because it makes the league look stronger

    38) I think your list was worse than BTI’s. I realize you said you don’t agree with all of them, but some of those were ridiculous and I can’t believe some people follow those “rules”. Living in Louisville, I have many friends that not only aren’t UK fans, they are UL fans. I actually have some red clothes. Including a couple St Louis Cardinals shirts (though they do say St Louis, not Cardinals…) I DO like Payton Manning. I have many tattoos (no flat bill caps, though). Just last year I said our football team “just wasn’t good this year” and may have alluded to it regarding our basketball team. Being a UK fan shouldn’t mean that have to live in a fantasy land

    Bama title
    Auburn title
    Bama title
    Bama title

How do you know Dempster hit him for that reason? Do you have a source? I have heard it reported on multiple national stations that he beaned him for a personal reason.

Apparently Dempster invited Rodriguez to a charitable event in the offseason and Rodriguez was a no show after saying he would be there. Dempster actually told a Canadian journalist that if he faced him during the season he would hit him.

I don’t know what the truth is because it’s all hearsay to me, but it really bugs me when people write accusations that they have no insight on.
