It is a big Monday full of news, views and videos of Ryan Lemond being knocked down. But like Chumbawamba, when he gets knocked down, he gets up again. For instance, at times he leaves us speechless:
Couldn’t have said it better myself Ryan. A few thoughts:
— It is going to be interesting to watch the UK football recruiting class over the next few months as it seems almost certain top schools will be coming after the UK commitments. In addition to having a number of highly ranked recruits now, Kentucky has a number of guys who are projected to potentially rise in the rankings. If Kentucky has a slow start to the season, one would assume the power schools will come and try to pounce. However what makes me confident that Stoops will be able to keep the majority of a top class together (it is currently ranked #20) is what we saw toward the end of the recruiting season last year. He took Hatcher from USC, Timmons from Florida and held commitments from players like Zadarius Smith when top schools came calling. When Stoops sells his program, he is selling a system that works. So far there has been no adversity, but when some comes (and it surely will with the hardest schedule in college football), I still expect him to be able to make it work.
— There are likely to be a couple of more commitments in the next few weeks. The most likely candidates as of now are four star WR Derek Kief and four star Safety Darius West. Needless to say, both would be huge additions. Kief is one of the biggest targets on the UK board, and even has his own website to follow his recruitment. He has offers from huge schools, Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame, but he is from the area (Cincy) and loves Vince Marrow. Picking him up would be a huge statement. The same is true for West, who is also from Ohio, and has offers from Penn State, Missouri, Pitt and others. He is a difference maker on defense and a guy this staff loves. IF these two become the next two to “come on down”…well, the recruiting momentum then will be like nothing we have seen before.
— It is Derby week, which means as usual I will link to the definitive piece of Kentucky Derby writing, “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved” by Hunter S Thompson. The author is of course a Kentuckian and everyone older than 25 surely knows his work. But some of our younger readers may not, and his writings are a big step in the formulation of “first person” journalism that inserts the author into the story…which is basically my only style. Check it out when you get time and enjoy…it is as good as it gets.
— Everyone is of course talking about Jason Collins and his decision to become the first active male team sports athlete to come out of the closet while still playing a sport. I applaud him for his decision and love the fact that he has decided to be who he is publicly going forward. But did you know that Collins, who attended Stanford for college and played against Kentucky in the 1998 Final Four, was nearly a Cat? During Pitino’s last year and Tubby’s first few months, the Collins twins were UK recruits that picked the Cardinal over Kentucky. Many thought UK was the players’ second choice, before choosing to attend Stanford, where they roomed with a future Congressman (Joe Kennedy) and became friends with Chelsea Clinton.
Finally, take a look at this picture of a Tampa Bay Rays sideline reporter taking a selfie that came out today. She went in the outfield during batting practice and took a picture mere moments before a baseball flew by her. A number of sites have confirmed the picture is real (even though it looks photoshopped) and it has gone around the internet today. Pretty crazy stuff and maybe the coolest pic in some time.
