The Continued Inspiring Story of Lane Goodwin

It is hard not to read about the story of Lane Goodwin and shed a tear. When you see the outpouring of support that has existed for this young 13 year old battling cancer, it cannot help but humble even the hardest of us. However, the story of Lane Goodwin has also brought out the best in people as well. Matt Norlander of CBS today writes about the way UK basketball players have embraced the young man, including Nerlens Noel. This video of Noel Facetiming with Lane is truly amazing:

And then there is the story of this weekend, when a number of folks helped Lane Goodwin’s brother and family make the trip to Big Blue Madness. The hope was that Lane would be able to go, but he has become too sick. The group included Reese Kemp, an amazing 15 year old with cystic fibrosis who is unbelievably inspiring to me. While fighting through his disease, he has reached out to others in ways that are truly heartwarming. Here is a report on his efforts to help Goodwin’s family:

And the support keeps coming in from around the world. The pictures below are just a small example of those that have taken to the “Thumbs Up for Lane Goodwin” movement that has showcased the amazing generosity of so many. There are a lot of reasons to celebrate being a part of the Big Blue Nation and on days like today, we revel in those moments. But there may be little that anyone has done around UK land that has been more powerful to watch than what we have seen concerning Lane. Our prayers continue to be with him and his family.

I like Johnny Depp as an actor a lot. But when he has more bling than Brett Michaels, he may need to cool it a little.

    Prayers for Lane.

Cal brings in great kids to the program! Most of these guys know they will only be here for 1 year – yet they reach out to the BBN and truly care. Good job guys, and good job Cal for bringing the best of the best to Kentucky.

This is awesome! Thank you so much for this coverage of Lane Goodwin and his story! I haven’t met him or his family, but I feel like I know them. Lane is my Hero and has really changed my life and caused me to be more aware of Childhood Cancer and how it is the Monster that is causing suffering and pain to our kids! I love Lane and his family and think the information you gave will continue to keep Lane’s message going! Thumbs up, Lane!

Keep fighting the good fight, my Little Man! Thank you for being an inspiration for us all!

Martha, you are so right about childhood cancer – there is nothing more unfair than a child afflicted with this. Please donate to St. Baldrick’s next St. Patty’s day when it rolls around. Find a team to donate to – I will be getting buzzed for the tenth year in a row to help raise money to fight this disease. Never have I had a more meaningful haircut. Maybe someone could get the kids on UK’s basketball team to start a St. Baldrick’s team up in honor of Lane. That would be so cool, and think of the publicity for UK, Lane, and the fight against childhood cancer.

Lane, you are an inspiration. May the Lord bless you, keep you, be gracious to you, and shine his light upon you. Phil 4:13 says, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. He will be with you every step of the way. My prayers are with you and your family. Thank you for being so brave and courageous. Although I do not know you. Your heavenly Father knows everything . He will never leave you or forsake you. God bless.

Not to be insensitive, but am I the only one who wants to see those four guys in a room together and just witness it. That may be the strangest collection of celebrities giving support I’ve ever seen.

If ‘one’ ‘one-and-done’ can make a difference in ‘one’ kid’s life, then they are every-one worth it….championships or not….wins or not….

I’m just thankful Cal has the ability to bring in so many kids that are able to make differences in so many kids’ lives….Cal is clearly bringing in kids who are champions in life and for that reason alone we should all be thankful….

Prayers to Lane, his family and all others who come into contact with this horrible disease in any way what-so-ever!

Lane is an inspiration to us all. I thank God that He chose Lane to be the voice for Childhood Cancer. Now, for Lane, we can all give him a gift and do what he started, bring more awareness to Childhood Cancer.Give support to the children that have this and give to research, so there can be a cure found. Here’s to the hope that God and Lane’s work won’t stop here. God bless all those suffering with this disease. God bless Lane and his whole family.

Lane has passed away, and I wanted to take this time to thank God for this ANGEL of a kid. I never met Lane but I can say this. He was TRULY an Angel sent from Heaven. The short amount of time he was with us, he touched SO MANY LIVES. God put him in our lives for a reason & I guess God & Lane have accomplished what he was meant to accomplish. God truly gained 1 of the best Angels of us all and my prayers go out to his family. I wish I could have taken all the sickness away from him, FOR him, but unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. Lane was 1 of the GREATEST of BIG BLUE NATION, and I will NOT forget what he has meant to everyone he has touched. Lane, we will miss you buddy. 🙁

Some things just greatly transcend sports and life in general, and this is one of them. I heard of Lane’s passing on the evening news. he is at peace in the arms of the Lord now. May Lane’s friends and family, especially his younger brother, feel the peace and comfort that Lane is feeling now in Heaven. Earnest prayers are going out to all that Lane has touched. Cheer your Cats on from the best seat in the house, brave little man!
