10 Things You Didn’t Know About Northwood (Fla.) Basketball

Let’s learn about Northwood!

Come on!

1.  Northwood University is a private university with multiple locations across the United States.

The school has three residential campuses: Midland, Michigan (opened in 1961); Cedar Hill, Texas (opened in 1966) and West Palm Beach, Florida (opened in 1984).

UK will play the Florida one tonight.

2.  The school’s (again, the Florida one) mascot is a seahawk.

The other campuses have their own mascots too.

They cheer for the Timberwolves at Northwood (Michigan) and the Knights at Northwood (Texas).

3.  Northwood earned the No. 1 ranking in the 2012-13 NAIA D-II Preseason Top 25 Poll.

Northwood holds the distinction by one vote (332-331) over second-ranked and defending national champion Oregon Tech. The Seahawks, who finished 34-4 last year with the final defeat coming in the national title game, gathered five first-place votes.

4.  Head coach Rollie Massimino won the 1985 NCAA Championship in Rupp Arena with Villanova.

But you probably knew that already.

Coach Cal said Massimino called him up this summer and asked for an exhibition game because he hasn’t been back to Rupp since the ’85 Final Four when his eight-seeded Villanova team upset No. 1 Georgetown, 66-64 in the final game. That ‘Nova team remains the lowest-seeded team to win the NCAA Tournament.

5.  Starting point guard Tyrone Davis is listed at 5’2”, 134 lbs.

I had to double-check that one.

It’s real.

6. The Seahawks compete in the Sun Conference.

The conference, formerly known as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, features perennial powerhouses like Johnson & Wales, Ave Maria, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

7.  Jose Jono Jumamoy is a former graduate.

He currently serves as the Municipal Mayor of Inabanga, Bohol, Philippines.

I’m really struggling here.

8.  Masse Doumbe went for 20 points and 14 rebounds against Michigan State.

The skilled-power forward is probably too good to be playing at Northwood. If anyone is going to give UK fits, it’ll be Masse Doumbe.

9.  Northwood has a campus in Louisville.

That explains why Northwood fell just short of the championship in 2012 and hasn’t sent any players to the NBA.

10. The Seahawks held a dunk contest at Hoops Mania!

See for yourself.

The dunk that won it is pretty spectacular.

It just goes to show the level of athlete that is now competing at almost all levels of college basketball. With the advent of AAU ball, most of these kids have been training and competing since they were in grade school. Twenty five years ago a kid with this kind of athleticism would be playing at a major school – now they are becoming a dime a dozen.

I think we should have Wiltjer guard this James kid…that should slow him down a little!

Those dunks are amazing. Guy’s vertical is insane…but…does he give a girlie scream after the last one? I know he yells, but all I can hear is a womanly squeal. I think it might be him. Anyway, Cats coast tonight 110-63.
