#1: To be or not to be?

With Syracuse losing in South Bend last night, it’s just a formality that Kentucky will rise to the top of the polls for the second time this season when they come out Monday. That is no doubt exciting, as seeing ‘#1’ next to ‘Kentucky’ is sort of a symbolic representation of UK’s place at the pinnacle of college basketball. But, there are some who believe that the #1 ranking isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Reaching #1 is a beautiful thing. It means that, in addition to Kentucky fans just believing the Cats are the best team in college basketball, there is some kind of empirical evidence to go along with that notion. However, some people think that the top spot in the polls is more of a curse than a gift. The argument can be made that a #1 ranking doesn’t matter in reality and instead creates a whole new set of problems for a team, particularly one that is so young. The target that is permanently painted on the Big Blue’s back will now be even bigger, and teams will be gunning to knock off not just Kentucky, but Number One Kentucky. If life can get any more difficult for a team that is already everyone’s Super Bowl, it did as soon as Harangody 2.0 finished off the Orange last night. As the second-ranked team in the country the Cats could be great and at the same time not be the ultimate focus of the college basketball world. As the first? There’s no hiding out.

I’m playing a little bit of devil’s advocate right now, because frankly I love being ranked #1 and I think this team can handle whatever additional pressure comes along with it. They’re all business and have already had a taste of life at the top of the polls with their short stay there earlier in the year. In fact, I think it may even have the opposite effect of those who are fearful of the #1 ranking and lead to this year’s squad raising its game to another level. All of this remains to be seen, of course, but how the team plays in their second stint as #1 will tell us a lot about how mentally prepared they are to make a run at a title.

I’ve heard a few people talk about the #1 ranking both ways, so I’m curious how the KSR nation feels. Would you rather have the top spot in the polls and all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it, or stay at #2 because in the end it doesn’t matter, thus avoiding the new headaches that the top ranking can bring? I’m pretty firmly in the ‘Be #1’ camp, but what do you say? The comments are yours to discuss.

only p*ssies say “I don’t wanna be first”. We’re UK dammit.

It makes a big ass difference being #1 at the end of the season. I particularly want UK to get a seeding that will put our fans in the best position to go the NCAA games. The more it is like Rupp, the better for us.

People play just as hard to beat us when we’re #2, so we shouldn’t worry about that. The players just need to keep their heads on their shoulders and remember that ranking doesn’t matter one bit if you don’t keep winning.

I like being number one. It’s no different from the pressure and attention generated by a number one seed in the tournament. I agree with the author that this could be something that galvanizes this squad and raises their focus and play.

Being first seems normal for us. Anything over #1 and we’re not reaching potential. MKG and Davis should play better, and hopefully this spurs Jones on as well. There was already a lot of pressure on these kids, so this won’t make much of a difference.

Think its healthy to deal with the pressure right now for this team. Think it is also good to face the A game they will get from every team and opposing crowd because of it. Its a challenge they can handle and learn from. Freshman struggle with pressure late in the NCAA tourney. Its why we haven’t won two of them in a row, so whatever they can face to simulate pressure and better learn to deal with it during the season is good for this specific team.

We have one loss and so does Cuse.

Seeding make the difference (unless you are Dook, and the NCAA gives you the cush ride to the NC)

Observe the UK women beat the Dookies, and have played 5 ranked teams and beat all of them except Notre Dame (who we would have beaten on a neutral court) and yet Dook is still ranked above UK. Ranking matters because it makes it harder for the national press to ignore you, as right now ESPN loves Dook. UK should be #1 less some turd think Ohio State more deserving in the MCBB polls, and Dook more deserving in the WCBB polls. The world will not be right until both Dook basketball programs are smashed to rubble in the national media.

God Bless America, and Go CATS!!

I would rather be Number 1 all season and then squash all opponents into submission as we cruise the national title…but short of that, I’ll take it when we can get it.

It is also important to be #1 ranked at the end of the regular season, when the tournament is seeded. Much better to be a #1 overall seed having, supposedly, the 8th overall seed as the #2 than to be the 4th overall and have the 5th overall seed as your number 2.

Syracuse will only drop to 2nd, followed by Missouri, Ohio State and Kansas to round out the top 5. Mark it down. #6-10 is Duke, North Carolina, Baylor, Georgetown and Murray. Thats will be AP poll. I guess if we are #1 and take care of the business in the conference, then even committee can screw us with the seeding. Last year we beat Gators in the SEC Tournament like a drum and the losing team was rewarded with #2 seed, while Kentucky was awarded #4 seed in one of the toughest bracket. I believe the disrespect committee gave our guys fueled the fire for a final four run as we beat the best of the best along the way in WVA, Ohio State, and UNC. I think we will start our quest for #8 in Louisville with Regional in Catlanta. Looking forward to traveling with the Cats in the NCAA Tournament. Go Cats #1

“UK #1 Camp” on this one people, let’s get serious! To the Big Blue Nation this is basketball season, people, and we are #1 no doubt about it and the team is going to just love this experience because now they got it back after losing it before. This accomplishment is going to go a long way with this team in proving to themselves that they have put together under Coach Calipari one hell of a college team that makes every possible opponent ask themselves if they have the stuff to take these boys on. Of course we all know the answer to that question, but it’s fun to make other teams worry about themselves instead of worrying about us, the only thing we EVER do is focus on our next opponent and plan their destruction by our ball handling which is out of this world. Whew! That was a lot but it felt good to get it out. #8 is ON IT’S WAY! Drew

apparently this year, the bugaboo ranking slot is #3…seems that a team gets mugged at the 3 hole, moreso than if they’re number one…I do think there is a national media bias against UK..Gottlieb claiming Ohio State with their 3 losses (including one to Kansas) should be ranked ahead of UK (ahem)…and Missouri should leap frog (from another mid-west site) into the top spot because of their handling Baylor in Waco…hmmmm…I guess beating UNC, Louisville, Kansas, and Tennessee on the road (where UConn seemed to have trouble) isn’t good enough in Gottlieb’s eyes to keep UK ahead of Ohio State (funny really)…regardless…it’s better to finish the seasons last poll (some time in April) number 1…now is for show…

I love it when UK is #1. Wish we could stay on top year round. I want UK to be like the race horse that won by such a wide margin that the second place jockey thought he won. Seven times we’ve won it all. A great chance to be #1 overall for the eighth time. Who even remembers how many times we came in second in the NCAA tourney? (three, four?) Years ago, Adolph Rupp spoke for UK fans: “We want to win; we just have to win. Lord knows, no one wants to win more than we do.” He also famously said, “If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, then what in the hell is that scoreboard doing up there?” Another direct quote: “We here at the University of Kentucky do not wish to merely participate in sports. Rather, we wish to be successful in sports. Basketball without victory has little meaning.” The Baron of the Bluegrass would have little patience for those who would aspire only to be #2.
