The Sacramento Kings’ Twitter account tweeted out a video this afternoon giving fans an inside look at former Cat Skal Labissiere’s summer trip back to his home country of Haiti. Skal had not returned to Haiti since the tragedy of an earthquake that wrecked the country back in 2010. Labissiere was saved from the rubble that January day, seven years ago, and now he is giving back more than most Haitians can.

You can definitely tell how much Labissiere’s home country means to him. Being able to go back to Haiti and see old friends and his old neighborhood were probably an emotional experience that none of us could ever imagine. I’m so happy for Skal that he has the opportunity to do this now after all these years. Labissiere is someone who has had an incredibly difficult journey through life to this point, and he is being rewarded now for how determined he was to fight through those difficulties.
Here’s to hoping that he continues to progress for the Kings, similar to how he played in the second half of the season last year. Skal finished the season averaging nearly 12 points and 9 rebounds per contest over the final 20 games. I think that he has the potential to have a long NBA career ahead of him.
