BBNBA: Tyler Ulis is an NBA starter, Skal goes for 32

I’m not sure there’s ever been an NBA player that I’ve been so emotionally invested in, before Tyler Ulis. Tyler Ulis was a fan-favorite for so many reasons, and watching him develop in the NBA is something that would make any Kentucky fan proud. Last night, Ulis was granted his first career NBA start, and earned his first NBA double-double as well. Glad the kid could take advantage of the opportunity given to him. Can’t wait to see what he continues to do towards the end of this season. On the other hand, Skal Labissiere was the victim of a lot of hate from the fans during his time at UK; however, since Boogie was traded to NOLA, Skal has been given more minutes. Labissiere has been a monster as of late, and his first 30+ point game last night is just another example.

We all know he can pass, but he did add a few big buckets for the Suns last night as well.

Makes you wonder what would have happened if we actually played Skal at stretch 4 like we should have.

    1. JusSayin

I’m not saying this is a race issue: But I feel like if Skal had been white people would have been more open to using him as a stretch 4.

He’s closer to a European big man than he is an American one. If he had been a long lanky white kid I think people would have seen Kristaps or Danilo Gallinari potential in his game… but because he was a long lanky black kid people kept comparing him to Anthony Davis and Karl Towns which hurt his development.

Even in the NBA they were using him wrong. The only reason he’s been allowed to expand his game now is because the Kings have officially gave up and didn’t care… so now they are pleasantly surprised by what he can do when they let him play his game.

I think everyone on the planet thought he was a stretch 4 besides Cal. Don’t believe race was any factor at all. Also don’t think Skal is a kid that took well to Cal’s incessant screaming and yelling.

    3. bhb71

I think Skal would be a top-10 pick if he had either WCS or Bam at center. We couldn’t use him properly because we had Marcus “I literally don’t know how to defend without fouling” Lee at the 5. It’s such a shame that we wasted all that talent.

    4. J-Dub421

The problem was we didn’t really have anyone else to play the 5 last season, so Skal had to play out of position due to necessity.

I think stating that Skal was the recipient of a lot of “hate” from UK fans is pretty strong. Sure there are crazy fans on social media among every fan base that can be ignorant and brutal, but I would say that many fans were just (very reasonably) frustrated by the underwhelming performance of one of the most touted recruits of the Cal era–he was rated the #1 recruit in the nation by some services!

Regardless, I’m happy to see him do well and I hope he has much success in the future.

OMG — 238 combined points by alumni of one college program on a single night in the NBA. Is that a record? And that’s with three other active players sitting out and a fourth going scoreless! That’s gotta be a record, no?

    1. CPACAT

You just beat me to the punch…I haven’t added them up every day, but 238 is the highest I have seen by our BBN alumni…

  4. StuckinLville

These guys are really under whelming huh? Glad to see so many Cats doing well. And I dont think it was a race or hate issue with Skal. Like someone said, his 1 year was not at all what we were expecting from him, but that was up to Cal to realize how to use him. Unfortunately, Dakari Johnson left and Skal had to fill that role. Skal next to Bam this year would have been really nice to see, but Skal did what’s best for him. He’s playing well and he’s a really nice guy so I’m happy for him.

    1. JusSayin

I didn’t mean race issue in terms of racism. I meant race in terms of “if he had been white we might have seen stretch 4 potential”.

People don’t like to make cross-racial comparisons so all people saw in him was a potential Anthony Davis when really he’s closer to Danillo Gallinari.

I actually happen to think the same thing about Derek Willis. He can do more than shoot. He’s a great athlete with Wing skills that we have relegated to a spot up 4 man… of-course he struggles to defend on the wing any way so.

  5. jayiron11

Remember those doom & gloom, low basketball IQ, toxic portion of BBN, saying Skal would never play in the NBA? They said he was too weak. Said he would never see the floor. A couple of them who have commented in this thread. Now they are talking about how he could have dominated if he could have played the stretch 4. LMFAO. Same ones talking smack about Briscoe will he on here singing his praises when he’s putting up triple doubles in the BBNBA.

    1. TBW3011

If you think Briscoe is getting a triple double in the NBA you should cease making fun of anyone else immediately. LMFAO
