Not nervous about this game. I guess because I don’t expect to win.

    1. ukjaybrat

ditto. unfortunately. as long as we don’t get embarrassed, i’ll be ok with the outcome

    2. runningunnin.454

I remember Kansas beat us by 55 during Pitino’s first year… I’m predicting we’ll do better than that.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I don’t really expect to win either, and I don’t like that. I know we’re young every year because that’s the nature of the beast that is Cal’s recruiting. However, I don’t like feeling every year that we aren’t going to win the Champion’s Classic game because of it. We ran Duke off the floor when Ulis was a soph, but we turned out not to be very good that year.

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I guess Matt just punched holes in my comment! I can’t say I feel much better about tonight, but maybe a little.

  2. DrSayre

Kenpom has us losing by 1 (he actually had us winning by 1 until Saturday)

    1. ukjaybrat

kenpom is a lot more accurate further into the season because it uses a lot more statistics other than win/loss which is what a lot of the “experts” go by. but this early in the season, we don’t really know anything other than we are young and kansas is not (as young as us). so i would take kenpom with a grain of salt. that being said, i would love to be in a close game like that because i’d like our chances in that position.

  3. TimothyJinx

I’ve been in a funk since the Wisconsin game. If we can’t win it all with that team it’s hard to imagine winning it with any team.

    1. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I haven’t been in a funk, but I can’t deny that thought hasn’t crossed my mind here and there.

    2. runningunnin.454

It will be a little payback if Herro signs with UK…the badger fans were pretty upset when he decommitted.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      True RG.

And I guess I used a double negative at comment #i. I hate it when I do that.

    4. J-Dub421

Timothy, by that negative rationale, we should all go ahead and kill ourselves because we’re going to die eventually anyway.

  4. Craig

We have not been very goo dearly in the season except in years we had good returning experience, or transcendent talent. We don’t have either. It’s not “in a funk” to recognize that while we’ll be a contender by the end of the year, we will probably struggle early and lose games. I’ve expected something like 2014. The flip side of expecting to win every game when it’s unreasonable is melting down when we do. I’m gonna enjoy the ride, but it’s going to have a lot of ups and downs. We should be pretty damn solid in March.

    1. Realme

Tonight, I want to see some early signs of what they can be when they grow up some and get 2 injured players back.

    2. RealCatsFan

Yep, I really wish we had Vanderbilt and Baker ready to play. Those are two major losses, IMO.

  5. RealCatsFan

I have to agree with Matt about the Foo Fighters concert getting cancelled. I was bummed big time. Have been looking forward to seeing them again for ten years. Now it will be on a Tuesday – will mean I will probably have to take the next morning off work. They should give everyone in the crowd a free drink for their inconvenience, or free parking or something.

  6. Realme

I feel like these guys have this same “why aren’t the fans into this yet” conversation every year. I’m into it.

  7. RealCatsFan

My favorite name on this year’s team is Sacha. I even have my kids calling him “Sach I-kill-ya Jones”.

  8. ky196

What’s with all the gloom and doom here?! I’m like JT, “trust in Cal”. These kids will be just fine! It’s a big stage early in the season, exactly what they have all been aspiring to since they were young kids. I’m sure it will be a good game!

  9. runningunnin.454

One problem with attendance is the students have to pay for tickets; when did that start…I didn’t buy a ticket to basketball, football, baseball, track, rugby or anything.

    1. J-Dub421

Students have been paying for tickets for well over 20 years.

    2. ClutchCargo

I think I remember student tickets being free with student ID in the late 80’s when I was there. I was in the band, so I never a ticket. Except for family and friends, and I do remember being able to buy student tickets for $6 for them.

    3. runningunnin.454

20 years? Wow, it’s still……wrong. Just my opinion.

    4. J-Dub421

It was $5.00 when I went to UK in the late 90’s-early 2000’s.

    5. ukjaybrat

matt addressed this once if im not mistaken. the reaso nthey started charging $5 for tickets was because if you got a free ticket, you wren’t really invested and if something else came up, “well i didn’t spend any money on this it won’t bother me to go do this other thing.”
but if you paid $5 for it, then it’s a little harder to “just not go” if something else came up. It’s a psychological thing really.

    6. runningunnin.454

Still not buying that argument; they keep bashing the students, and they have no knowledge of their economic situation; so their solution is to sell the seats to people with the money? Not everyone comes from a privileged background.
Many of my high school friends couldn’t afford college even with academic scholarships.

    7. ukjaybrat

matt said on record if you really are so poor you can’t afford a tiucket, he will give you $10 right there to go to a game. and so would i. My problem is many of the people making that argument will go to the bar and spend $50 then turn around and say they can’t afford $10 for a game. which is complete horse crap.

  10. DrSayre

lol I had no idea people had such strong feelings towards minor league soccer

    1. RealCatsFan

I never played the sport, so maybe I am missing something, but for the most part I find soccer to be extremely boring. Takes forever for someone to score, just a lot of running back and forth, players flopping to fake injury, and THE GAME CAN END IN A TIE! No REAL sport can end in a tie! 🙂

Hell, I find women’s volleyball to be more exciting to watch than soccer, but I may be biased. 😉

    2. ClutchCargo

I’m admittedly not a soccer fan, but I cringe when I see what they are doing to the formerly pristine Slugger Field turf. I’m sure it will bounce back, but that field is literally one of the nicest in all of professional baseball.

    3. J-Dub421

Soccer ranks high on the snooze-fest scale along with golf and baseball.

    4. ukjaybrat

i like playing soccer, but watching it is admittedly not very fun

    5. RealCatsFan

I have to admit that volleyball is a lot more fun to play than it is to watch. Alas, that is my lot in life – I watch my kids play, whereas back in the day I played 5+ times per week. But like any parent, I love watching my girls play!

    6. JTHinton

Yeah I know s lot of y’all don’t think about other ppl but a) it’s not “minor league “, it’s second-tier, and b)it’s unclassy and embarrassing to the league and LouCity

  11. RealCatsFan

I think the internet and media in general is a big part of the problem. In years past you didn’t have 70 inch HD TV’s, DVR’s to record the game, etc. You either watched the game on a fuzzy 25 inch TV, or you saw it in person. Likewise all the forums (like KSR 🙂 ). That makes it easy to talk sports with like-minded people virtually anytime. Previously, you did that at the game, at the tailgate, or at a sports bar or a friend’s house. The internet in general is changing the social dynamics of America.

    1. runningunnin.454

I still say students shouldn’t have to pay to see their classmates compete in university sanctioned sports. And, Matt is wrong, I had several friends at UK that couldn’t afford to go to Burger King and buy a whopper. And, 500 students at the basketball games? I never really thought about it; but, I would say there were 5,000 students at the games in Memorial.

    2. ClutchCargo

Agreed. I don’t even know that it’s a problem, it just it what it is. I used to send an entry each October for the basketball season ticket lottery. There is no friggin’ way I would pay for a set of season tickets now,

    3. RealCatsFan

Free beer for students attending games. I guarantee THAT would liven up the place! 😀

  12. DrSayre

I had a twitter spat with Matt over the weekend, but Im with him on this. 3 ties us with UCLA, Im going with the 3 titles in basketball.

    1. RealCatsFan

      Yep, me too.

    2. J-Dub421

Same, three is more than one.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I had to step away. What were the choices?

    4. J-Dub421

1 football national title or 3 basketball national titles.

    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I don’t usually entertain hypotheticals because I want to win in every sport, even if I don’t particularly care about certain sports generally. But in this case I would take the 3, definitely, and then we could claim about 18 championships (see RG’s comment at #13).

    6. runningunnin.454

O.K. for arguments sake, I’ll take the one football championship. I’ve enjoyed 5 basketball titles…but I don’t remember the ’51 sugar bowl win over Oklahoma.

  13. J-Dub421

This idiot is the problem. Five whole years without a title! Dear god! The humanity!

    1. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I agree, but he may be thinking like I am: UNCheat is one missed 3 away from having 7, and then really nipping at our heels (no pun intended).

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And also 2 of those 7 being the last 2, and then Roy would have 4 of those 7, correct?

    3. runningunnin.454

Hate to break it to you, Chris; but, UNC claims 7 basketball championships.

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Well, then they would be claiming 8 if Nova misses. Haven’t you said those are Helms championships? What was that? A laundry detergent company? I think that’s what some of Bama’s claimed football championships are.

    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And didn’t you say we have about 7 or 8 of those that UNCheat claims?

    6. runningunnin.454

Yeah, they were given a retroactive Helms Foundation title for the 1924 season; they didn’t really embrace it until Duke tied them in NC’s.
UK has 7 Helms titles, so a little test for UNC athletes…7 + 8 ncaa titles equals…..

    7. J-Dub421

      15! Did I math correctly? 😉

    8. RealCatsFan

rg, you know as well as I do that a UNC athlete could not answer that question. Stop teasing them! 😀

    9. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

But only they claim it, right? The NCAA hasn’t recognized it, have they?

    10. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      lol at you all!

    11. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Here it is:
“At one time Helms Bakery Company was reported to be the largest home delivery bread company in the country.”

  14. Realme

That caller is an example of the worst part of our fan base. Selfish, unreasonable expectations, negative for no reason.

    1. J-Dub421

That was one of the jerks who thinks the fans are the most important thing, and that we should win every single game and win the title every year. They have unreasonable expectations and are incapable of being rational.

  15. Laker Cat 18

I’m not bailing out of this game before it starts. I think we beat Kansas tonight.

    1. J-Dub421

I think we definitely have a shot. I don’t get the people thinking we’ll get blown out.

    2. ClutchCargo

Cal’s teams are built for the spotlight. Not at all worried about them showing up. Not guaranteeing a win, though.
