What I am Hearing

Everyone in Kentucky media is scrambling right now as rumors are running rampant about what may or may not happen tonight. Here is what we know:

— Louisville reporter Joe Sonka, who has been on top of the story from moment one says he has a source that says the announcements from UL are not done for the day.

— I have been told by a good UL source that “if you are doing your TV show tonight, you might need to go live because of what is coming.” We normally tape at 4:30 and thus we making contingency plans to potentially go LIVE at 7:30.

— Terry Meiners just said on his radio show that Rick Pitino texted him and said, “I don’t know what the hell is going on.”

At this point, its all smoke. But it is billowing. We shall see. Stay tuned…this afternoon/night could be quite a ride.

Would have made a hell of an Outside the Lines.

“This is clearly all ESPN’s fault. They just wanted more material for their stupid 30 for 30!”

      – Desperate UL fans as their program burns to the ground

Will you stream tonight’s show on the website for those of us out of state?

  6. Ninjashock

In all seriousness–if these allegations are confirmed (which they surely will be), does Pitino go down in history as the dirtiest coach of all time? If not, who would be ahead of him?

    1. IAmTheDanger

Not sure but he better be glad he’s already in the HOF.

I don’t know if this is worse than Jerry Sandusky or Art Briles, but U of L is definitely top 5 on all time college scandals.

Card chronicle is blowing up, it’s hilarious!

I have a strong belief in not going to other teams boards for comments…I’ll read an article ahead of a game or something to get a grasp on what they’re feeling about their season… but WOW… I had to read them after what you posted…you’re not kidding…

    2. catheaven

      Are they blaming us yet?

    3. Mathlete

I visited their boards as a reader only, even their hardcore fans are saying burn it down and start over. This is going to be brutal.

My guess about what’s still happening is an emergency meeting of their board to give their interim President power to fire Jurich and Pitino

    4. 4everUKblue

I didn’t comment, I don’t want to be the DennyC of that site.

    5. J-Dub421

U of L fans are desperately hoping UK gets caught up in this. They salty.

Seems like Card Chronicle is blaming it on Adidas, not themselves.

    1. 4everUKblue

One fan painted UofLittleBrother as being victimize by Adidas….cant make this stuff up…

All the rivals and critics have blasted UK and Calipari for years over the “one and done” “just a rest stop on the way to the NBA” recruiting. It’s ironic and funny that his reputation might be the thing that shields him from this scandal. As others have said, he doesn’t HAVE to bribe kids, because they know he’ll get them to the NBA legally, within the system. That could change as those implicated snitch and cut deals to save their own asses, but I’m feeling okay about this for now. An added bonus is that maybe the NCAA will finally move to punish UNC if they want to save any shred of whatever reputation they once had.

Matt, just listened to 104-5 the Zone in Nashville interview Gary Parrish and of course one of the guys asked about Coach Cal and UK and should they be worried. Parrish said of course, this stuff goes on everywhere but can I prove it, no. We should have expected this! Just surprised it wasn’t Forde!

Announcement tomorrow morning, Tom J and Ricky 3 stacks are gone.

    1. ClutchCargo

That might be the University’s last chance at a Hail Mary to avoid the death penalty.

    2. Han

I’d bet the NCAA has begged them to hammer themselves quickly so they can avoid handing down the death penalty.

Louisville is on top of merchandise lists year after year, which always baffles us, and the ACC is an NCAA and ESPN darling, so they’ll do everything they can to avoid the Death Penalty.

Like we have always said, if UK has cheated, prove it….just that simple.

    1. RealCatsFan

I have always said that if Cal was as dirty as some claimed, he would have been one of the first to be put under the microscope like this. Hell, he has been under the microscope since he got to UK. So if he has been cheating, he has been doing a helluva job at hiding it, because you know he has people out to get him.

Pitino doesn’t lie… from Dec 29th, 2011: “LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rick Pitino said Tuesday that he won’t coach past the 2016-2017 season when his current contract ends at Louisville… My contract’s going to run out in 2017. I’m not coaching anymore after that.” — http://es.pn/2fQ6iAU

When the Feds start knocking at your door getting ready to put you away for 15 years, deals for immunity start getting cut, and this could easily spread to Nike or Under Armor.

    1. RealCatsFan

Valid point. Let’s hope that Sandy Bell and UK’s compliance department have had their radar on and steered UK far away from this stuff.

Here’s the thing…Cheating in college athletics is deep-seeded, and happens everywhere, at every level. Now, does it happen at THIS level everywhere? I don’t know…I can’t imagine that it does.

I’m concerned, sure, just because of how far-reaching this appears to be. But, I’ve also thought about it, and from a logical standpoint, it would make little sense for Calipari to do something so brazen when, in all reality, he wouldn’t have to.

He’s had programs get hammered in the past, he’s undoubtedly under a major microscope from the NCAA, and his track record of getting guys to the NBA would be enough, IMO, to lure top-level talent here without having to resort to huge payouts and bribes. If you’re an NBA-caliber talent, why take thousands of dollars now, when you can get millions in a year or two?

    1. kentuckybackupplayer

cheating goes on in restaurants too bro.

    2. Han

Not to mention if Cal paid to get any guys, there are a couple former players who would probably have talked about it by now to get attention or money. Guys who transferred out or left early and didn’t make it in the NBA.

If those guys had heard a hint that Cal paid to get a guy or that agents were handing out stuff, they’d have rolled over by now. Same goes for recruits who wanted to come here, didn’t get the offer, and fizzled at another school.
