No. 24 Kentucky lost to unranked Texas A&M 77-68 this afternoon. It was an exciting back and forth game with 13 lead changes and eight ties. It’s no surprise that A&M won, for the past five years in the UK – A&M series the visiting team always wins.
The Cats really struggled with rebounding and foul trouble. The Aggies out-rebounded the Cats 38-26 and scored 22 second chance points whereas Kentucky only scored eight. Murray got into foul trouble early with 4 fouls and Rice ended up fouling out. Despite getting out-rebounded, Coach Mitchell doesn’t think fatigue contributed to the loss.
“I don’t know how fatigue could’ve been an issue because we subbed liberally today with no player over 36 minutes,” said Mitchell.
Seniors Makayla Epps and Evelyn Akhator both had impressive games, scoring 20 points each. But, their offense wasn’t enough. It was all tied up at 62 with five minutes left, then A&M went on a 4-0 run and Kentucky lost it’s cool. A&M started hitting big shots and ended up scoring 16 points within the last four minutes.
“One of the things we’re working on is keeping our head up and our composure, but it’s hard when they hit big shots like that at the end,” said Epps.
This was the Cats’ first loss in Memorial this season. Epps said she’s ready to get back to work with her “nose to the ground” and prepare for Alabama this coming Thursday.
UK Hoops will be back in Memorial on Sunday the 15 to take on UGA – a game I personally cannot wait for because I have a deep hatred for UGA (I know I’m supposed to be an unbiased media member but it’s hard sometimes).
