Today on KSR: Vegas Summer League begins

Good morning, friends! I hope everyone had a phenomenal Fourth of July holiday filled with plenty of grilling, sunshine, and beer.

After taking the day to keep posts focused on celebrating Jared Lorenzen’s life (along with breaking any news that popped up), we’re now back on schedule today here at KSR.

Let’s dive right in.

Las Vegas Summer League

Tyler Herro, Keldon Johnson, and Wenyen Gabriel put on a show during the Salt Lake City and Sacramento Summer Leagues, but starting today, several other former Wildcats will get their shot to impress in Vegas.

13 former Kentucky players are on 13 different Las Vegas Summer League rosters, meaning almost half of the entire league will have a BBNBA member.

Here is the entire list of former Wildcats set to participate:

  • Atlanta Hawks – Reid Travis (2019)
  • Boston Celtics – Aaron Harrison (2014-15)
  • Chicago Bulls – Mychal Mulder (2016-17)
  • Denver Nuggets – Jarred Vanderbilt (2018)
  • Los Angeles Clippers – Isaac Humphries (2016-17)
  • Miami Heat – Tyler Herro (2019)
  • New York Knicks – Kevin Knox (2018)
  • Oklahoma City Thunder – Hamidou Diallo (2017-18)
  • Phoenix Suns – Derek Willis (2014-17)
  • Portland Trail Blazers – Skal Labissière (2016)
  • Sacramento Kings – Wenyen Gabriel (2017-18)
  • San Antonio Spurs – Keldon Johnson (2019)

PJ Washington is also technically on Charlotte’s Summer League roster, though he is not expected to participate due to injury.

Today, Herro and the Miami Heat will get things started at 5:30 p.m. ET against China on ESPNU, followed by Mychal Mulder’s Chicago Bulls taking on the Los Angeles Lakers at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.

After the battle of Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett at 9:30 p.m., Keldon Johnson and the San Antonio Spurs will take on the Orlando Magic at 11:00 p.m. on NBA TV.

And finally, Derek Willis and the Phoenix Suns will take on Jarred Vanderbilt and the Denver Nuggets to close out the night at 11:30 p.m. on ESPN.

UK football target Richie Leonard makes his decision today

Richie Leonard, a three-star offensive lineman out of Cocoa, FL, will decide today between Kentucky, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Georgia Tech.

A former Kentucky commit, Leonard is rumored to be favoring both the Wildcats and his hometown Gators, with the decision almost certainly coming down to those two schools.

Yesterday, the 6-foot-2, 320-pound prospect tweeted out the following graphic:

We’ll have coverage of the announcement today on KSR at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Jalen Johnson commits to Duke

On Thursday evening, 2020 five-star small forward and Kentucky target Jalen Johnson announced his commitment to Duke, choosing the Blue Devils over UK, Wisconsin, and Arizona.

While the 6-foot-8 forward turned heads this summer when he called Kentucky his “dream school” growing up, Duke has long been seen as the runaway favorite in Johnson’s recruitment. And then on Independence Day, he confirmed those rumors by getting the process over with and officially becoming a Blue Devil.

Kentucky will now turn to the likes of Daishen Nix, Jalen Green, and Brandon Boston Jr. to fill out the 2020-21 backcourt.

We’ll have more on what the decision means and why Kentucky isn’t worried on Pilgrim’s Insider Notes later this afternoon.

Joey Chesnut wins again

The Hot Dog King has done it again.

For the 12th consecutive year, Joey Chesnut came away victorious in Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, chowing down 71 hot dogs and buns on the Fourth of July.

Here was a quick clip of Chesnut during the home stretch:

20,000 calories and likely being sick for several days for $10,000. Worth it? Probably.

No new KSR show today

Today, instead of live KSR, there will be another replay show as the radio crew closes out their Fourth of July festivities.

Matt Jones and the rest of the gang will be back on Monday to catch you all up on all of the latest in the world of UK Athletics.

Until then, stick around with us here at the website to keep you updated throughout the day.

Go Cats.

No show thread today I assume. Anyone else working today?

    1. runningunnin.454

You know, USED TO BE, holidays were days to look forward to, a day off from the daily grind…Yay.
Now, that’s not good enough, people have to take 2 days, 3 days, 4 days…
Oh, excuse me, there’s somebody on my lawn…”hey you, get off of my cloud”.

    2. Realme

Ha ha. I have to hoard my days because the husband gets more than I do, and I want to take off with him as much as I can. But hey, work one day and be off again. Fine with me.

Not sure why they didn’t use a Jared episode for the rerun today. I decided to move on to something else.

    3. runningunnin.454

Still looking forward to football season; but, it won’t quite be the same around here. Will definitely miss Jared’s ebullience after the wins.

I’m working, reluctantly. originally had the day off, in anticipation of a lake trip. Of course, that never materialized. 🙁

    5. J-Dub421

I am. It sucks. I made some cookies yesterday for the poor schmucks in my office who had to come in to work today.

    6. ClutchCargo

I’m off today, just because I saw the opportunity for a 4 day weekend, and I just saw this while checking in for a second. Mrs. CC is always off most of the kids’ summer break, so it’s just a matter of me taking off when I can. The only downside to that is I have to wait until at least August if I want to just have a day off by myself. 🙂

    7. StillBP

Real, my Dane (Nelson) was dog of the day on Wed. You commented that you liked his socks 🙂 yall wanted me to let you know if he was ever on there but I didn’t see it until later that afternoon so I couldn’t tell ya then.

    8. Realme

!!! That’s great, BP. He seemed fine with the socks and everything else.

    9. StillBP

Lol he has learned to accept my shenanigans and that they are over quicker if he plays along

    10. J-Dub421

My hubby took off today, but he has more vacation time than I do.

Reminiscing about that last second win against Missouri is kind of fun.

My employer threw in today as an extra day off, and I’m off Monday for my next 3 month checkup for my melanoma.

RCF, thanks for the kind words yesterday. You all, please keep the family of our friend who died in your prayers. She was only 50 and had a stroke, and she was put in a rehab facility but passed away. She was divorced and had a daughter in college, and as I understand it the dad wasn’t really in the picture much. So it’s her extended family (she does have several uncles, aunts, and cousins here) and church family that will have to be there for her apparently.

I was just checking in for a minute. I just got a tire put on one of our vehicles and now I have some stuff to do. I’m still deciding whether I want to brave the heat and do some yard work. It’s 90 degrees (expected high of 95) with a 99 degree heat index. *whew*

    13. runningunnin.454

Cute pic, Still BP; but, why does he look like he’s thinking, “Oh hell, here we go again”.

    14. ClutchCargo

Go ahead and do that yard work, cg. I’m about to do another round of excavating about 6 wheelbarrow loads of dirt from where a knucklehead contractor thought it was a good idea to bury the bottom step of my deck stairs in an attempt to level out a low spot in the back yard. It was on my builder’s dime, so I’m not having them come back out, because I know they will screw something else up if they do. They did a good job overall except for that one little detail. Go cats, and go having another day off to get stuff done!

    15. runningunnin.454

You guys be careful in the heat; you know, old folks have to know their limitations. HAH.

    16. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

StilBP, I have to look up that pic! BTW, I don’t know if I ever answered your question, but no I am not “weneedpitino” (thanks for the reminder Clutch!). Maybe I should create an alter ego here sometime!

Good luck with that work man.

    17. ClutchCargo

I’m hard headed about going ahead and doing what I have planned to do, no matter what. But you’re not wrong about the need to take it easy in the heat, rg. I’m starting to realize that more and more all the time.

    18. Realme

At least work is air conditioned.

    19. StillBP

Lol rg this ain’t his first rodeo!! He annoys me with his constant need for attention from me, I retaliate by dressing him up for photo opps

    20. runningunnin.454

Hah, at least he had the cowboy hat for the rodeo.

    21. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Does someone have that link for BP’s dog? I like Great Danes, but we still don’t have the “Old Posts” button. I hate the French. Haha. JK.

    22. J-Dub421

      I love French food though.

    23. ClutchCargo

cg, it was a “Today on KSR” post. Maybe try searching that. If you know the title of the post, you can usually find it that way.

    25. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I found it by Googling (Bing did not work) “KSR dog of the day”. Oddly enough, I could not even post a KSR link here. Grrr!!! Anyway, cute dog BP!

BTW, it looks like to find old posts, you can also type in the entire URL for KSR, and then add the page number like this:
      /page/2/

    26. StillBP

That day was also my birthday so it was great that Tyler picked him for that day. Of course that’s the day J-Lo passed away so the happiness quickly turned to sadness

    27. J-Dub421

      Happy belated birthday BP.

    28. StillBP

      Thank you J-D

    29. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Hmmm, at least some others can post a link but I can’t. It makes me wonder again about the way KSR and/or WordPress is operating and possible motives. Oh well, with all the current glitches who knows.

Happy bday BP, and I obviously have still not waded out into the heat, and it’s warmer now. lol

See you guys! Have a blessed weekend.

    30. RealCatsFan

Awww, he is cute! And I agree with rg about that look on his face. 🙂 I’m not sure if my dog Maggie can top that one, but we will try.

Saw we lost a 5* recruit to Dook; can’t believe they still buy that brotherhood spiel. Do they not notice Dook was better the first game of the year than they were the last game of the year. There’s the real impact of K’s coaching.

    1. J-Dub421

Duke has had a lot of lottery picks that have not been as good as advertised when they got to the NBA.

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Knucklehead teenagers I guess. Grumpy old man voice “These kids these days!!!” Haha.

  3. J-Dub421

I shed actual tears over the death of Jared Lorenzen. He will be missed.

    1. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      I still can’t believe it.

    2. Realme

Me too. It’s amazing how many people who didn’t even know him were really affected by his death. KSR site and Hey Ky did an incredible job of remembering him and Twitter was pretty much all tributes to Jared Wed night and all day yesterday. Special guy, so sorry for his kids.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Yep, prayers for the family.
