I’m guessing we don’t get either one.

I’m guessing from this message, the kid is not a priority for Cal. Sounds like he is trying to throw shade and being bitter.

He’s probably meaning that he’ll go to UK if he wants to be focused on getting better at basketball, and not attending stripper parties, doing drugs, etc.

  3. njCat

Well… he’s not wrong. Cal seems to only recruit kids who want to spend as little time as possible in school.

Poythress was a great student. Brandon Knight was a stellar student. Marcus Lee was a great student.

Yes, it’s probably different when these guys are more academically interested than their peers, but my guess is that the coaches don’t mind.

This is Duke’s well-practiced “why you should come to Duke rather than UK” speech…….”UK is a great place for knuckle-dragging hoops-only kids…..but if you want the prestige and post-basketball advantages of one of the nation’s premier universities come to Duke, the Harvard of the South…..or is Harvard the Duke of the North ?

Coach K and his staff have been pumping that kid full of this BS for 3 years……..and seemingly he believes it.

Kid, if you want to make it to the NBA, you had better be a basketball only type of guy.

      Exactly

      Well said !

If we are going to be one-and-done U then you have to expect other coaches to highlight the negative side of that as well to players that don’t fit that mold.

Let’s say that Lewis was a Calculus whiz-kid; an elite mathematician, with an opportunity to break ground in his field. And let’s say he was being recruited by MIT, and when asked about the recruitment said that it would be a “great school to attend if I were a Math only type of guy”. Would that be a knock on MIT? Would that raise eyebrows? And if not, why not? Coach Calipari is a teacher who helps students with raw athletic ability fine-hone their skills so that they can reach the pro-level, entertain fans, financially support themselves, their loved-ones, and improve their communities. Why is that viewed as something less-than, or not as valid & worthwhile as any other academic-endeavor?

Mr Woo I couldn’t have said it better. Life is waaaaaay to short to not take advantage of the gifts we were blessed with, whatever those gifts may be. Some, not all of these kids, are truly blessed with athletic abilities a lot of us dreamed of having. They should use those skills to their maximum benefit. Hopefully along the way they learn to share their blessings with mankind.

Dook certainly seems to get a lot of “basketball only” guys lately, and they haven’t stayed around long.
And, to Dook’s chagrin…they are not Ivy League, and never will be.

Sounds like just another kid from New Jersey headed to Rutgers-Durham.

Cole Anthony & Kira Lewis are higher on my wish list.

Cal has recruited those guys for a long time because they were the best, but over time other guys have developed like Cole Anthony. Cal probably likes other guys over him now. And if he doesnt want to make the best basketball decision, then go somewhere else.

In notice that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is not listed as a choice. I guess he decided how ever long he is in college that he wants to actually go to class and learn something.

Who would win the NCAA Tournament if it was based solely on Academics?

You might be surprised to learn Kentucky makes it to the championship game. Duke gets knocked out in the Sweet 16.

I don’t think interpretations on the meaning of the young man’s words are correct. Therefore it’s kinda irresponsible to carry on about what we think he meant on just a few cloudy words . Next
