I picked up two fouls last night, just sitting in my la-z-boy; one was totally bogus.

    1. RealCatsFan

I pick up fouls all day long, every day, and my wife is the ref. Most are probably justified. πŸ™‚

    2. runningunnin.454

      Any technicals?

    3. RealCatsFan

Dutch oven usually draws a Flagrant-1.

    4. CatManDo

      Don’t you mean a Fragrant 1? …sorry, couldn’t resist.

    5. Megan

Funniest comment I can recall here. Thanks for the laugh!

  2. J-Dub421

The officiating… I just cannot even.

    Briscoe balled out.

    1. runningunnin.454

Briscoe and Fox in the paint, devastating. Shut the Vandy fans UP.

    2. RealCatsFan

Fox looks like he can get to the rack any time he wants.

    3. J-Dub421

Vandy could not stop Briscoe at all. He got into the paint at will.

    4. ukjaybrat

i think bryce drew told his players to just let us score if we get into the paint because the officials were calling everything whether it was a good foul or just good defense. any contact whatsoever was a foul. so the only way to play defense was to not play defense at all. and that’s what vandy did yet they were still the ones in foul trouble in the second half because our guys are just so much better (and deeper)

  3. RealCatsFan

The game was pretty much what I expected. I was actually worried that we might drop this game way before it was played, basically because it is a road game in a weird environment with a young team, and Vandy has a lot of experienced dudes who can nail 3-pointers. I actually thought the Cats handled the adversity pretty well. I don’t think anyone had a terrible game. Our guards simply brought it – I truly think we have the best combo of guards in the country.

    1. ukjaybrat

wneyen didn’t have a “terrible” game, but it wasn’t really good either.

  4. J-Dub421

You know how I know the officiating was completely terrible? Briscoe shot 10-18 and Fox shot 11-17 from the floor, they only put up 1 three each, and Briscoe shot only 4 free-throws, and Fox shot none. All the times both drove the lane, and only 4 free-throws between them.

    1. RealCatsFan

… and Bam was ice from the line last night!

    2. runningunnin.454

The SEC officials have reverted to their policies in the early ’70’s. The turned the games into ballets; and then when the SEC teams played in the NCAA, they couldn’t handle the contact and were manhandled.
The conference changed the mandates, fortunately, by the late ’70’s….of course, that was when Dale Brown of LSU said we played karate defense.

    3. J-Dub421

They call the wrong things. Don’t call ticky tack touch fouls at mid-court that have no impact. Call it when our players get mugged in the paint. Briscoe should have gone to the line on about half of his shots last night.

  5. RealCatsFan

I just don’t know what has happened to Wenyen. He looked so good early in the season – to the point where most of us didn’t expect to see him coming back next year. Now it looks like he will be here for a while.

    1. J-Dub421

I’m okay with keeping him for another year.

    2. WatchutalkinboutWillis

I agree with both comments. He hasn’t progressed as much as I thought he would. Especially he was touted over and over again as the player with the biggest upside. We have several wing players coming in next year as well (and still trying to get Knox) so that could be interesting. It will really put the “positionless basketball” into full effect. That said, I still wouldn’t mind keeping him for another year.

  6. RealCatsFan

Was listening to Diener on 790 this morning (I sometimes tune it over there when the other stations are running their boner and jewelry commercials), and he was also calling out the Vandy fans as the dumbest in college basketball. They were choosing between the Vandy fans and the WVU fans for rushing the court last night. Vandy took the win – at least they won something.

    1. Realme

If winning that game had been a reason for them to storm the court, they are pretty dumb. Loudly wanting MORE fouls than the refs were already calling was also dumb.

    2. J-Dub421

If you take away the 4 free-throws that Monk hit in the last 17 seconds or so when Vandy fouled him on purpose, we only shot 20 free-throws (24 total including those 4). Vandy shot 32 free-throws. That’s 12 more “in game” free-throws. It’s especially bogus when you look at all the times we drove into the paint compared with all of Vandy’s jump shots.

    3. J-Dub421

For comparison – Vandy’s Fisher-Davis was 4-15 from the floor, 2-10 from the three, and shot 11 free-throws.

    4. ukjaybrat

Jump shooting teams don’t get as many free throws as teams driving to the basket because they aren’t getting hacked as much. those stats you provided pretty much cement the fact that those officials had no idea what they were doing last night. there’s no excuse for that.

    5. J-Dub421

Vandy put up 29 threes and shot 32 free-throws. We shot 9 threes and only took 24 free-throws.

  7. RealCatsFan

Not a bad night, considering Duke got waxed again. When you combine that with a Cats road win, it is hard to beat! πŸ™‚

The FSU crowd was booing Grayson every time he touched the ball. Shades of the Arkansas kid Saturday night – and Grayson deserved it just as much, if not more.

    1. Realme

Not clear why shoving a coach isn’t a punishable offense.

    2. Booby Petrino

The coach who was shoved came out in support of Grayson, saying it was a hustle play and he didn’t feel like Grayson did it on purpose. He said he felt more from the lower body and didn’t really feel the push. He said people need to give Grayson a break.

    3. Booby Petrino

that being said, Grayson is a punk even if it wasn’t intentional. He’s already proved that he’s a punk.

    4. J-Dub421

Allen has lost all benefit of the doubt as far as I’m concerned.

    5. Realme

I’m sure he didn’t plan it. Just has no ability to control his impulses. It’s going keep happening until someone gets hurt.

    6. J-Dub421

Apparently his natural impulse is to be a tool.

    7. ukjaybrat

booby, if that coach came out and said anything different, he would be put on blast for saying something bad about another player (maybe not about allen) – but coaches (especially assistants) have it drilled into them to say nothing bad about opposing players and that comment was probably just muscle memory more than anything. so i would take it with a grain of salt.

However, allen is under a microscope now. so a play like that could be just an accident for another player will be viewed as YET another cheap shot by allen. he created that for himself though. it’s not like we don’t already have a laundry list of evidence showing he is a dbag on the court.

I tend to look at the good in people and would like to say it was an accident, but when you’re falling, your natural reaction is to grab onto something to help ease the fall. not push away and potentially make the fall worse. and i don’t think he was running over there with the intent to push the dude. i just think he has it ingrained in his muscle memory to just react and kickout or push or whatever it is he’s doing because he’s gotten away with that childish behavior for so long without getting caught that it’s just who he is and what he does. i doubt there will ever be a “cure” for it as long as he is playing the sport – which is unfortunate for him bc he will not get away with that in the nba. he’ll get fined or punched in the mouth (or both)

    8. RealCatsFan

I’m in the sleep study business in a way, and I would have to bet if they ran a sleep study on Allen, it would reveal that he has restless leg syndrome and has a tendency to trip or kick anyone who is sleeping next to him. πŸ™‚

    9. bluemoonofkentucky

Hard to believe that Allen started his tripping at Duke…. high school, junior high, junior pro?? Or maybe he did just begin this nasty habit? Either way, not good.

    10. ukjaybrat

no cameras or replay in high school. harder to get caught.

  8. Laker Cat 18

    Fox moves….like a fox.

  9. runningunnin.454

I’ve always liked Derek since he showed up on campus; but, I’m starting to wonder what’s in his head.
Vandy is not athletic or fast, and is a team Willis should dominate. Last year I thought if he continues to improve, he’s NBA bound….I’m afraid he is going to blow it.

    1. J-Dub421

Derek is a head case. If he misses a shot or two the rest of his game completely falls apart. His mentality is very much tied to his shooting. When he shoots well it carries over to the rest of his game. The reverse is also true.

    2. RealCatsFan

I was really hoping that he would outgrow that by the time he was a senior, but I’m afraid that the episode over the summer should have served notice that he still has some growing up to do. By all accounts he is a really good kid, but some of us just take a little longer to gain more of a grown up’s perspective on things. Players with his kind of talent have to grow up a little faster than the average college student. I’m sure Cal is working on it with him – hopefully he will “get it” before the end of the season.

    3. Realme

Barring a miracle run, I think he’s already blown it. I feel like him like I did about Poythress. So much skill inexplicably unused.

    4. J-Dub421

I like Derek, he’s a good dude. He just frustrates the crap out of me. Rebounding and defense are about effort. Bad shooting nights happen to everyone, don’t let them trash the rest of your game.

  10. symphonist41169

I agree, I don’t think Allen went after the ball on their sideline with the thought “I’m gonna shove that coach over there”, but he’s just so naturally a punk that his antics are in his subconscious and they’ll always naturally happen. The trippings were definitely intentional; every other punk moves he makes (like shoving a coach) is just going to naturally happen because he’s a pure punk.

    1. RealCatsFan

I have always wondered if so many of the douchey dook players were like that before they came to dook, or if the douchebag culture that permeates dook made them that way. Does K just look for kids who have a natural affinity for douchebaggery, or does he instill it in them?

    2. symphonist41169

I think it’s a combination of all you listed. K tends to go after kids who appear to be self-entitled assholes and when they get to campus it just becomes even worse.

  11. RealCatsFan

I bet Brice has better taste in music than Matt has – and he probably knows how to run a chain saw. πŸ™‚

  12. RealCatsFan

“Hap” calling out others for their appearance was kind of like “The Donald” calling out women for being ugly. Sorry dude, but your mouth looks like an anus when you talk and you have a golden marmot living on top of your head. πŸ™‚

    1. runningunnin.454

There you go again…..have to look up marmot in my Funk and Wagnals.

    2. RealCatsFan

rg, did you find Donald in your search results? πŸ˜‰

Honestly, I’m not thrilled that he will be our next president, but I hope he keeps his word on making America “great” again – especially for the average folks like us. Not just his buddy billionaires.

    3. runningunnin.454

Yep, marmot is a squirrel, and Donald is a duck.

  13. RealCatsFan

OK, my phone rang and I didn’t hear everything – why are we now talking about golden showers?

    1. J-Dub421

      Sessions hearing yesterday.

    2. runningunnin.454

Didn’t watch the hearing….are you serious?

    3. J-Dub421

I didn’t watch the hearing, but that’s why Matt was talking about it.

  14. ukjaybrat

anybody else a little too upset about the wetspot that briscoe fell in and gave vandy 2 free points?

on the previous possession a vandy guy CLEARLY fell exactly where that wet spot was and their staff failed to clean it up. not saying it was intentionally left in order to get exactly what happened. but let’s just say it was obvious the guy fell there, and it was in an obvious spot where a defender would be standing when a guy is on the corner there.
Either way, whether it was intentional or not, it was clear negligence by the guy with the mop and it led to 2 free points. that kind of thing shouldn’t just go unnoticed. what if briscoe fell and strained a groin or something? safety hazard right there (read with a little sarcasm but with hints of seriousness)

    1. J-Dub421

Yes, a Vandy staff fail for sure, and one that could have been costly for us if Briscoe had been injured.

    2. RealCatsFan

Yep, that would have sucked. He got up a little gimpy from it. For most of us mere mortals, it would have been three weeks in rehab.

I wonder if they ever did anything about the support stand for the goal being so close to the court down at Florida. That was a major factor in the Nerlens injury – he simply didn’t have any room to avoid it.

  15. runningunnin.454

You have to like Charles Barkley…..good one, Coach.

    1. RealCatsFan

Glad to hear that Coach Hall is feeling better. He has some great stories!

  16. a21CATSfan

Matt, we know you hate to take calls and cut anyone off that doesn’t agree with you. It’s the worst part of listening to KSR. But, when Joe B calls, shut up and let the man talk.
