New school trending for Mark Smith

Last week, UK got a commitment from four-star shooting guard Jemarl Baker, but apparently the staff is still keeping an eye on Mark Smith. Smith, who also hosted Duke earlier this week, will visit UK before making his decision, but a different suitor is currently trending in his 247 Sports Crystal Ball: Illinois. Brad Underwood seems to have made landing Smith, the Illinois Mr. Basketball, a priority, and Smith will visit his home state school this weekend, along with Ohio State.

The last four picks in the Crystal Ball have been for Illinois, including that of the site’s primary recruiting guru, Jerry Meyer, who flipped his pick from Michigan State:

Smith played in the Derby Festival Classic last week, and afterwards, told Ben Roberts that Illinois is recruiting him as a point guard, his preferred position, whereas Kentucky and Michigan State see him more as a shooting guard. Will Underwood seal the deal this weekend or will Smith hold out to take a visit to Lexington? Great question. While you figure out the answer, I’m going to watch these highlights:

If Cal and Robic tell you you’re a shooting guard, you’re a shooting guard.

Who cares about him, he looks like a football player and didn’t do much when I saw him play at the derby festival, he looked like a football player out there, lets focus on getting either Cam Johnson or Kevin Knox and Mo Bamba to round out the class. We desperately need Mo, as it is now we are short on quality size, we have a bunch of 6’8-6’9 guys but know one to hold down the middle besides Nick, Tai is not a good player and we are in trouble if we have to depend on him for minutes. Sacha is NOT a 5 he is a 4.

Not sure why you say Tai is not a good player considering Cal has been complimenting him…you probably don’t remember Jorts coming from nowhere to do a solid job when Enes was ruled ineligible. They wouldn’t be on the team if they weren’t good at basketball.

If we are being honest, the UK hype train gets guys in the NBA who might not have ever been considered otherwise. This is exactly the reason why guys like this should go to UK. Going to Illinois is essentially saying, “Nah, I don’t want to be on TV all the time and be marketed as a potential pro. I’ll just go to my local college and end up selling used cars in a few years. Thanks though.”

I hope he goes to Illinois. As great as Illinois high school basketball is, it is amazing to me that they are not a top 10 school every year in college basketball.

THINK of all of the great basketball players that have come to UK alone. Many of the the great basketball players in the SEC prior to 1980 were Illinois players.

It has always been puzzling to me how Illinois has not been a consistent great basketball program. Great school, great conference, great facilities, etc. You get 3 or more of the top 5 kids from metro Chicago, pick up a few of the really good players from elsewhere in the state, and you’d be great.
