The Kentucky Oaks ran Friday evening, but one attendee had an exciting day long before the horses hit the track. Cyndi McHolland, a breast cancer survivor, named walking in the Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade and meeting KSR’s Matt Jones as two of the biggest items on her bucket list. On Friday afternoon, she checked both off the list.
After walking in the first two annual parades, she got devastating news that her cancer had spread.
“I didn’t want to tell anybody. I sort of felt like, I’d been representing myself as a survivor all these years and now I didn’t feel like one anymore,” McHolland told WHAS in Louisville. “I was afraid I’d scare people because of how much it scared me. Then, you find all the reasons to be strong and all the people who help you be strong and you get to do some things over.”
One of the things that kept her strong was our very own daily radio show, including Matt Jones and his “stupid” jokes.
“I can’t help it. I’m a UK fan. And Matt Jones, he’s my little hero out there. That’s on my bucket list, to meet Matt Jones, from KSR – isn’t that ridiculous?” McHolland laughed. “Because sometimes when I am sad, he’s right there telling some stupid joke.”
During her interview with the station on Oaks Day, McHolland imagined what she’d do if she ever got the chance to meet him:
“I would try not to creep him out,” she laughed. “That’s been my worry since I saw [the original story].”
Well, she got the chance to meet Matt Jones, and don’t worry – I definitely don’t think you creeped anyone out.
