Lewis returning to Kentucky for junior season on mound

Nick Mingione will have one of his starting pitchers back next season with the return of Justin Lewis, a 2016 freshman All-American and 11th-round MLB draft pick this summer.

Lewis turned down an offer from the Tampa Bay Rays for another year on the mound in Lexington.

A 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore, Lewis was the Cats’ Sunday starter all season with a 6-4 record and a 3.56 earned run average in 91 innings. He struck out 72 batters and allowed only 77 hits on the year with a near perfect game against UC Santa Barbara back in March. His career ERA of 3.19 ranks sixth on UK’s all-time career list and he is fifth on the career hits per nine innings list with 7.45 allowed.
