    99 days until football.

    1. runningunnin.454

But who’s counting….’cept me, and obviously you.

    2. Iamheasyouarehe

      Me too, can’t wait.

    3. Iamheasyouarehe

The waiting is the hardest part.

    4. runningunnin.454

“I may have chased a couple of women around”
      Well, yeah…wink, wink.

    5. RealCatsFan

“Ned Beee–aaaa–tty, had the hardest part”… Can’t hear the Petty song without thinking of this version of it going through my head. 🙂

  2. Realme

Awww, Ryan. That is who he is, to the guy that trashed him at the end of yesterday!

  3. runningunnin.454

Boy, these guys are depressing me in regard to our big man situation for next year. I understand some kids may not like college; but, that “making a living” segment of your life is a long, long, long time.

    1. Realme

Yeah. I wish Blackshear would change his mind…

    2. RealCatsFan

At this point I will consider it a minor victory if EJ comes back.

    3. runningunnin.454

Now I think that would be a huge victory.

  4. RealCatsFan

Geesh, Lee Cruise owned up to the mistake that he made, and apologized. That is a lot more than a lot of people do. I guess some folks won’t be happy until he is drawn and quartered.

    1. Realme

He lost his freaking job. What more do they want!?!

    2. RealCatsFan

I will echo others who said that it is ridiculous and counter-productive to fire him. Much like the weatherman who lost his job for a simple slip of the tongue. This is what happens when decisions are made by stuffed corporate suits rather than actual humans.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

What did they say? I missed that.

    4. Realme

It’s overkill that his “victims” would also think his friends and co-workers of decades should turn their back on him. That’s basically what that caller seemed to think.

    5. Realme

Basically that it’s not okay that Matt & Co. are sympathetic and forgiving of Lee.

    6. BigBlueSean

First, Lee did apologize, but within his apology was quite a bit of deflection of blame to his script writer. But Matt stated that Lee does things “off the cuff”—- so which is it?

That is not what the caller said. It’s perfectly ok to be sympathetic to Lee. But Lee is not the victim. People of color who had to deal once again with 1) a DJ depicting a black person as a monkey, and 2) Lee effectively endorsing that by saying “that is my favorite DJ”. What black people find disingenuous is the fact that there are FAR more people who see the DJ’s actions as ok, Lee’s mistake as him doing nothing wrong at all, and an overall defense of Lee that is disproportionate when juxtaposed with the sympathy, empathy and concern over how his comments hurt people of color, much like Mary Joe Perino echoed on Hey Kentucky. Matt has 2 MASSIVE platforms in which he could discuss why tropes like that are unacceptable regardless of intent. He could explain the history the caller speaks of with these tropes and their usage to infer black people are “less than human”. Yet all Matt has offered is “I understand” which no white male can understand because our ancestors were not subjected to that. The caller prompted him to speak to those specific people, yet he once again reverted to defending Lee.

    7. cats646

Didn’t we all come from monkeys anyways? What’s the big deal?

    8. Realme

If Lee had known the racist context, the firing would be more than justified. It seems to me that he was just laughing at a royal baby being replaced by an animal, with no idea there was this ugly controversy and that the DJ was a piece of %^&*. We’ve talked about it a lot this week, I won’t go into it again why I believe Lee had no idea what he was saying, and just was ignorant of a British scandal. If I thought he knew what he was saying, I would say you’re right. Since I believe he didn’t, I think his apology and a suspension would have been plenty. Just my opinion.

    9. Realme

Cats646, Sean already explained why it’s a big deal.

    10. BigBlueSean

It is far less of wanting something done with Lee as much as it is a missed opportunity to have meaningful dialogue and a teachable moment. I personally would not have fired him. My wife is black as well and had similar response. Her solution – immediate suspension for 6 months, no pay.

However, he would partake in 1 show with Matt on Hey Kentucky, without pay, that details why tropes like that of the DJ are unacceptable regardless of intent. The history behind them would be explained and a full apology accepting COMPLETE ownership by Lee.

I think that is reasonable. Also, you dont do stuff off the cuff exactly for this reason. In the original excerpt Haley tries to stop him not once, not twice but three times. Lee persisted. It does not take a rocket scientist, and, someone with 25 years experience should no better than to call a DJ that depicted a black person as a monkey “your favorite DJ”.

    11. BigBlueSean

For those of you who do not think it is a big deal:

      I got a challenge,

Videotape an interaction with a random black person with your phone of you calling them a monkey. Then post it via Twitter.

Issue is NO ONE wants that smoke. Because EVERYONE knows how deplorable and inhumane that action is.

Also realme: Ignorance is never a sufficient excuse.

    12. Realme

In that sense you agree with Matt & them (i.e. Ricky Jones’s point).

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, no. It would take some sort of awareness that the baby’s mother was of mixed race. We had lots of discussion earlier this week that it is not that unusual to literally care / know nothing about the royal family. The fact that he was dumbly not getting Hayley’s obvious attempts to stop him is one of the reasons I think he literally had no idea what he was implying.

    13. BigBlueSean

Just as Matt said yesterday, “no one has the right to tell someone their feelings are invalidated”. It does not matter if it was an accident or unintentional or done in ignorance. It still hurts. My wife teared up watching it and as a fan of this show, much like the callers, refuses to listen to Matt due to his lack of addressing the true victims in all of this. An “I understand” is kinda bull crap and woefully insufficient as well as indicative of a blind spot Matt has. It was also not a good look for him to essentially say “I have a black friend, Ricky Jones”. Matt did not handle this caller well at all IMO.

    14. Realme

I hear you, Sean. I could be wrong, but his ignorance wasn’t a racial sensitivity thing, I think he did not know the royal princess or whatever she is has a black mom.

    15. BigBlueSean

People who have personal relationships with Lee like Matt, Ricky etc. are going to have a jaded view of the situation. Their opinions are not invalid, but they are jaded. People like my wife, Mary Jo Perino’s husband were devastated. Not all black people think the same way. To trot one black person out to say “hey they agree with me” does not invalidate the opinions of Perino’s husband, my wife, the callers wife, and many more that were hurt.

Very few view this incident as a summation of Lee’s character. Lee will be fine. He will get a job. But, he made a mistake, and in this society of social media, when you are in the public eye, ramifications are more severe… i.e. Megyn Kelly. But like Megyn, Lee is will be fine.

    16. BigBlueSean

Realme: that may be true, but intent does not matter. It factors in…but his comments devastated many.

If a person comes up to my wife and makes an insensitive comment that has racial undertones but is unaware of it and my wife is offended…. the intent or unawareness doesn’t matter. It still hurts. Luckily my wife is civil and explains to people why the action or words are not ok to use. Something that is said quite a bit to my wife who is fair skinned in the summer is ” Dang girl, look at me, I am darker than you”. No black person wants to hear that for various reasons. No ill will could be intended. But that digs at my wife regardless.

    17. Realme

I see what you’re saying about Matt, but he did say multiple times that what Lee did was very wrong. It wasn’t a lot, but it wasn’t just “I understand”. I’m sorry your wife had to see that. Even she thinks it could have been handled differently instead of eliminating his career, and I think that’s what a lot of us are saying. No one who knows the context thinks it’s okay be amused by what that guy in Britain did.

    18. RealCatsFan

Sean, you say repeatedly that Lee “will be fine”, but the man lost his job. And the fact that he was fired for a racially insensitive comment, whether intentional or not, will undoubtedly affect his marketability and his chances of landing an equal-paying job. Think about how devastated he and his family probably are, and the uncertainty they will be facing. He may in fact be facing public backlash from people who don’t know the full circumstances of what happened, and now view him as a full blown racist. In today’s climate of social media, one little slip up or misunderstanding can totally trash a person’s reputation. I try to emphasize this to my own kids – you have to be very careful these days what you say or do, as it can follow you for some time. I hate the idea that your wife and undoubtedly thousands of other people were hurt by the whole unfortunate incident, but to say that Lee Cruise will be “fine” is also kind of insensitive. The whole situation is just sad.

Since Matt again mentioned the band, Trampled By Turtles, and things are slow, let’s have everyone put a plug in for their favorite band that most people have never heard of, and favorite song by that band.

I’ll go first: “Voodoo Cadillac”, by Southern Culture on the Skids. If you have never seen S.C.O.T.T.S. in concert, they are very entertaining, and they rock out in a unique, hillbilly redneck southern grunge style that is unique. I’ve seen them probably a half dozen times.

    1. runningunnin.454

I liked Confederate Railroad and Kentucky Headhunters; but, I don’t know one that a lot of people wouldn’t know. No never heard of yours.
So, I’ll go back to the ’50’s, probably not many people now have heard of the Moonglows, they were put together by two Louisville guys, Harvey Fuqua and Bobby Lester. Their big hits were “Sincerely” and “The Ten Commandments of Love”.

    2. Realme

Is Shemekia Copeland someone no one has heard of? Best song is a rendition of “I pity the fool” with Robert Cray you can find on Youtube.

I also still love the Toadies, but they had a stretch where they had songs on mainstream radio when I was in college.

    3. runningunnin.454

RCF, just listened to “Voodoo Cadillac”; pretty good. I thought, wow, that sounds like Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie”…and then he was mentioned in the lyrics, ha ha.

    4. RealCatsFan

rg, I think the perfect pairing to “Voodoo Cadillac” would be “Hot Rod Lincoln”, by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Another band few have heard of, but I bet you have! 🙂

    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

“Mind Bender” by Stillwater (a Lynrd Skynrd type sound IMO). They were from Warner Robins, GA where I went to high school. Capricorn Records (Macon, GA), same as The Allman Brothers. I saw them in concert at the WR Civic Center the night of my last night of high school. Woo-hoo!!!

    6. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Just a bit of trivia I prolly mentioned here already: in the movie “Almost Famous”, the band is called Stillwater. The band Cameron Crowe actually followed was apparently The Allman Brothers, so he most certainly knew of Stillwater, and probably saw them perform and/or record, and borrowed that name for the movie.

    7. runningunnin.454

RCF, yep “You gonna drive me to drinkin’ if you don’t stop drivin’ that hot rod Lincoln”.

    8. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Come on Jack! Let me post the videos of the band! Well, one I tried to post is the studio version and one is a live version from a reunion concert. Go check it out if Jack doesn’t hack your computer to keep you off of the Yoo-Toob!

    9. RealCatsFan

First time I ever heard of SCOTTS was when I was driving home one night and they played their most well known song, “Camel Walk” on the radio. I remember laughing at that song all the way home. I had to find out who the band was then next day. My brother in law was in a cover band and used to perform Camel Walk. It’s a pretty goofy song, but I love it.

    10. RealCatsFan

“Brandi” was sung by a band called “The Looking Glass”, right rg? (Didn’t even Google it!)

    11. runningunnin.454

Yep, I posted further down, ha ha.

    12. DelrayCat

If you like Jamgrass…modern bluegrass: Infamous Stringdusters, Greensky Bluegrass, and Billy Strings among others.

  6. RealCatsFan

Realme, anything with Robert Cray in it is something I will need to check out. Have not heard of Shemekia Copeland.

    1. Realme

I can listen to that song 10 times straight. Hope you like it.

    2. runningunnin.454

RM, I had not heard that version; but I remember Bobby Bland’s version from the early ’60’s. I could listen to delta blues all day and all of the night.

    3. RealCatsFan

Wow, I’m glad I checked that out. I have always loved Robert Cray’s voice, but she has a set of pipes too!

    4. RealCatsFan

Since we are in a blues kind of vibe today….

KWS is awesome! I have that CD and have it in my iTunes. Robert Cray is cool too. I have to check out that duet.

    8. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Oh yea, and KWS has a GREAT vocalist. Perfect for that band.

    9. Realme

Lot’s of new stuff to listen to this afternoon when the day starts to drag!

    10. RealCatsFan

Some good Texas ZZ blues that does not get the airplay it deserves!

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGr4NHj92rY

Local radio station insists on playing “Legs” 4574663 times in a row instead.

    11. RealCatsFan

cg, some years ago I put together an awesome playlist of various blues tunes. Wish I could find it.

Not a reply fail. Bot told me I was posting too fast, but I was breaking up my original most because I got Mod-Botted. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Post not most…

    3. RealCatsFan

Don’t you just love the way you occasionally get spontaneously logged out by the KSR site?

  8. RealCatsFan

So Richie Farmer came up to hang out with another jailbird? 🙂

    1. RealCatsFan

That being said, it is good that it sounds like Richie has a sense of humor about it and apparently doesn’t take himself too seriously.

    2. Realme

Yeah good for him. Apparently some of these guys are capable of finding humility when they embarrass themselves.

  9. runningunnin.454

“Brandy (You’re a fine girl), reference, by Looking Glass, there’s one I haven’t heard in a while.

    1. RealCatsFan

I referenced it further up in our “music thread”. I knew you would comment on it. 🙂

  10. Realme

I would legalize weed and let everyone in jail for it out.

  11. Realme

What a panderer! How is “pay teachers more” a law that can be changed?

  12. runningunnin.454

Anybody remember “Them”, a band from Northern Ireland. They did “Gloria”, “Here Comes The Night”, and “Baby, Please Don’t Go”. Another bluesy sound, their lead singer was Van Morrison.

    1. Iamheasyouarehe

I remember them, I was just getting ready to point out that VM was the lead singer until I saw who posted the comment.
