Well now, did you know Reid Travis playted quarterback in HS?
And did you further know Tyler Herro is not just a stand still shooter?
    Ha ha ha.

    1. runningunnin.454

And did you further know, I’m on the IPad, and I invented a new word….playted, Gold Playted.

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I know that, if Reid is a beast, Silva must also be with Reid needing IVs after the game.

    3. J-Dub421

Reid won that battle though. Silva 4 points and 4 rebounds, Reid 9 points and 11 rebounds.

  2. Realme

Have you guys noticed that now that PJ is fully bringing it consistently, the narrative is, “he was always playing like this”. I keep seeing stories where people ask what the difference is now, and media, like Larry Vaught, and the assistant coaches are all acting like it’s nothing new. Um, hello, not that long ago,
Cal was calling PJ out for his effort, energy, leadership, etc., which has obviously improved.

    1. runningunnin.454

Not long ago,I was calling him out, too. He wasn’t giving us all he has; now he is…all the difference in the world.

    2. J-Dub421

PJ is gifted enough to dominate pretty much anyone in college basketball. He finally realized this. Cal said he waited a year and a half for PJ to play like this. Same Cal, same.

    3. RealCatsFan

Notice that he doesn’t really pose anymore, or at least not as much. Just seems to have a more mature and businesslike attitude. He’s growing up!

    4. J-Dub421

He still flexes sometimes, but usually only during a dead ball now. PJ flexed at least once last night when he got an and 1.

    5. StillBP

yeah he definitely still flexes. As long as it doesn’t hurt him getting back on defense, I’m cool with it. Not that he cares if I’m cool with it or not lol

    6. Realme

Yes, but he used to flex and make dumb faces every time he did anything, even if we were losing by double digits.

    7. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

One game recently he acted like he was going to flex then smiled and started laughing, so it seemed to be a tacit acknowledgment that he should be more judicious about when to do it.

  3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Tell me this: I know scheduling is all about TV ratings, but why do ratings dictate the need to play UT twice in a 2 week span? I think it should have been spread out a little more.

    1. runningunnin.454

True; but, I wouldn’t have wanted to play them earlier in the conference schedule; they are veterans.

    2. ClutchCargo

I hear what you’re saying, but I’m completely fine with the February Cats going up against UT instead of the January Cats.

    3. J-Dub421

The timing of games (7pm vs. 9pm) is determined by TV ratings, but the scheduling of when games are played (date) is based around the teams schedules (I think). All the SEC teams have to schedule around each other in order to get all the games in and work around the SEC/Big 12 challenge, etc.

    4. CatBlue in LR

I’m pretty sure the league office controls scheduling conference games (as far as the date; TV sets the time).

  4. runningunnin.454

I see people are pointing out Hagans’ turnovers; but, they obviously didn’t notice, the SC guard was a great on ball defender. He was in Ashton’s face all night, every step.

    1. Realme

I’m not worried about him at all, he’s not the first player to struggle for a couple games.

    2. StillBP

KSR is so dramatic. Saying Hagans had a great Jan but is struggling in Feb…all two games in Feb. Good grief, Charlie Brown.

    3. J-Dub421

Hagans has been a little off the last few games. I’m not worried though; he’ll figure it out. Also, Quickley has picked up the slack.

    4. StillBP

He was pretty good against Vandy and that was 3 games ago.Just funny to say he’s struggling in Feb when there have only been 2 games. Accurate statement…okay, sure. But dramatic, imo, since it’s only 2 games.

    5. Realme

Was it Nick that said that, BP? Sounds like him (mini JT).

    6. J-Dub421

Hagans is still really good, don’t get me wrong. He’s just looked a little “off” the last couple of games. I think he’s pressing a little. Hagans “off” is still better than most point guards in the country.

    7. StillBP

Yes, Real. In this morning’s post. He actually used Uh Oh Ashton in bold as the intro to that paragraph. And then…After an excellent month of basketball in January, Hagans has struggled since the calendar flipped to February.

    8. StillBP

J-Dub I know you aren’t hating on him or being dramatic. I was just annoyed when I read that earlier, esp w the bold paragraph intro, like 2 games is an indication of how the month will go for him.

    9. Realme

      That’s So Nick.

  5. Realme

So if we did meet Duke in the tourney (I’d rather a 16 seed beat them), who would guard the exalted Zion Williamson?

    1. runningunnin.454

    2. RealCatsFan

It would probably have to be defense by committee. Yeah, Reid would be good to post up with him and work him over physically, but with his jumping ability we may need someone with some length going after him. EJ and Nick might have to play a big role.

    3. RealCatsFan

And I have to begrudgingly say that the dunk that Zion missed would have been absolutely epic if it had gone down. Dude is a freak.

    4. runningunnin.454

Definitely have to be by committee. EJ and Nick would foul out; but, yeah, we would have to use our depth and extra fouls.

    5. J-Dub421

      Reid and PJ.

    6. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

He is a freak, but you know what? I’m not buying the story that he jumped too high for them to measure his vertical with that device they use…unless I see video it didn’t happen. Plus, part of that could be his wing span anyway. He is an absolute freak, but I just don’t see a guy who weighs 280, or whatever, out jumping everyone in history.

If there is video then I admit I was wrr-rr…I was wr-rr…wrr-rrong.

    7. RealCatsFan

Sometimes I wish we were in the ACC so we could get a couple shots at them during the regular season. If that was the case, I really think we would beat them in a revenge match during the season, but in a win-or-go-home situation I worry about the pressure on our kids.

    8. J-Dub421

I want another crack at Duke. (I could regret that in the future, but right now I want revenge.)

    9. RealCatsFan

cg, he definitely gets up. It is routine to see him with his head above the rim. My concern for his NBA career would be avoiding injury. That extra weight means a lot of force on his joints the way he jumps. One bad landing could mean a devastating injury. Wouldn’t wish it on him, but he probably needs to pare down the weight at the next level for the long term.

    10. J-Dub421

He’s going to need to lose weight to be able to run for 40+ minutes a game in the NBA regardless.

    11. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And for 82 games a year plus playoffs if his team makes the post season.

He can fly, but the other night an announcer was yelling “His head was above the rim!!!” No it wasn’t. I’m splitting hairs here, but his head was just under the rim and he had pulled himself up just up a bit. Again, I’m splitting hairs, but that is proof of the ESPN Duke/Zion OVER-hype machine IMO. If someone links a video of him out jumping history, I will apologize.

  6. RealCatsFan

HaHa, they actually had adult athletic shoes that light up when you run? My daughters used to have shoes like that when they were about six. 🙂

    1. J-Dub421

They still make those for kids. They’re adorable.

Actually, it wouldn’t be a horrible idea to have adult sizes for people who jog after dark (to make them more visible to cars, etc. as a safety thing).

    2. StillBP

yeah I have a friend who has already ran anywhere from 5-13 miles by the time I’m out of bed at 4:45am. It’s crazy. They run in the dark, cold, rain, snow, etc

    3. RealCatsFan

I always admired people with that kind of drive. I am NOT a morning person. I do much better exercising in the afternoon.

Runnners and walkers who are smart run against traffic so they can see approaching cars, so the lightup shoes might not be visible.

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

The smart ones use an indoor track when it’s snowing!

  7. runningunnin.454

To be fair, I bet there are people in Tenn that can’t spell Tenn…see, I didn’t even try.
People in Wisconsin can’t spell Wisconsin.

    1. Realme

How do people in Wisconsin spell it?

    2. RealCatsFan

Tennessee, Mississippi, and Cincinnati are best left abbreviated. 🙂

    3. runningunnin.454

    4. RealCatsFan

That ranks right up there with having someone from Eastern KY describing the sound the “tornader” made as it went over the “holler”. 😉

    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Ask Herro. And RG made me laugh again with “Tenn…see, I didn’t even try”.

    6. Realme

That’s what I’m calling them from now on so.

    7. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Hey, my family says “holler”! And Loretta Lynn said she was from Butcher Holler.

    8. RealCatsFan

My aunt (GRHS) used to say “oral” instead of “oil” and “worsh” instead of “wash”. I must have picked it up, because my younger kid is always correcting me. I tell her, hey, give me a break, I’m from the south!

    9. runningunnin.454

She even said it in a song, right? If you haven’t seen Coal Miner’s Daughter, catch it when you can.
      Sissy Spacek was terrific.

    10. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I did see it RG. And RCF, I definitely grew up saying “worsh” like Larry Vaught, but once we moved out of state it eventually went away. Now, there are some pronunciations, and especially slang, in GA and Bama that are southern but different than Kentucky.

Have you ever heard someone call a quarter a case quarter? That is a think in Georgia (or used to be…I don’t know if it still is). A convenience store in Montgomery is sometimes called a “Pak-a-sak”. There are many more.

    11. RealCatsFan

cg, when I lived in Baton Rouge, the slang term that seemed to be used in place of “redneck” was “coonass”. I didn’t get a feeling it was a racial term. Was used a lot to describe people from Mississippi.

    12. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Dr. John did a song.

  8. RealCatsFan

No doubt about it – Tom Hart is a regular KSR listener. Wonder if he is reading the show thread right now. Tom, are you out there?

    1. Realme

He’s hilarious. I can’t believe they let him do all this stuff that makes no sense to a lot of viewers.

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

You would think he could only get away with it if the game was on like ESPN 20 or Fox Sports 30. Or even better, the old regional JP/Lincoln Financial games, or when the SEC was on TBS in the 80s (although TBS may have been football only).

    3. Iamheasyouarehe

BBN viewers are the only viewers that count.

    4. RealCatsFan

      Jefferson Pilot?

    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Yep RCF.

    6. StillBP

What if Tom is BoB just messing with us?

    7. RealCatsFan

BP, that would actually be quite hilarious.

    8. J-Dub421

Tom doesn’t seem like the super negative troll type.

  9. RealCatsFan

My take on our early season struggles – like most of Cal’s teams, this team needed most of it’s development on defense. Most of these guys know how to score in HS. They haven’t had to play much defense on the AAU circuit. The defensive deficiencies of this team were disguised in the Bahamas because the teams they played weren’t that into it. When we had to play against serious college competition, we were exposed. And Duke is an exceptional offensive team when they are on. Perfect early season storm.

    1. J-Dub421

Guess we didn’t need to worry about covering the spread last night. 🙂

    2. RealCatsFan

  10. J-Dub421

Michigan State has now lost to 3 unranked teams back-to-back-to-back. They are not getting a 1 seed.

    1. runningunnin.454

And, we’re going to lose one of our quality wins if everybody keeps beating Kansas.

    2. Iamheasyouarehe

The only good thing about KU losing and us winning is the all time victory margin.

    3. mashburnfan1

MSU not the same since Langford went down. KU has lost all but 1 of their road games and not the same since their injury bugs. So hope we stay healthy, keep improving and see what happens. I try to warn you though, the SEC is bad so what we are doing is only impressive in that we did destroy Vandy and USC and the UF win was vs a desperate team on the road. That shows improvement as earlier those may have been close games. Those things encourage me, not just the wins as these teams we beat are not good. Not bashing just a fact, look it up.

    4. J-Dub421

The SEC is way better than that craphole known as the Big 12, so shove off.

  11. RealCatsFan

“Superstition” is one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs. Did you know that he attended the School For The Blind in Louisville when he was young? They have a whole exhibit about him in their museum, and it is pretty fascinating.

    1. J-Dub421

Love Stevie, and I did not know that. Interesting.

    2. RealCatsFan

He was nearly killed in a car accident shortly after “innervisions” was released. Logger truck lost it’s load, and a log came through the windshield and hit him in the head. He was in a coma for days afterward.

    3. Iamheasyouarehe

RealCats, good thing you didn’t mention that accident during that post about the Gamecocks and penetration.

    4. J-Dub421

We gave the Cocks some ED last night.

    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Wow, I didn’t know any of that about Stevie. “Superstition” is one of the greatest songs of all time, and don’t get me started on the old school funk and soul artists I love. I can go on forever: Stevie, Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, The Commodores (I love Lionel, but the Walter Orange songs ruled), LTD, Ohio Players…………….on and on and on…………

    6. RealCatsFan

cg, agree 100%! Some other great funk songs by Stevie – “I Wish”, “Living in the City”… lots of good stuff.

  12. RealCatsFan

Shannon is worried that if he sees a doctor it will be the end of his blues career. 😉

  13. Iamheasyouarehe

Does everyone agree with Matt that WCS was a better defender that AD? I’ve seen AD block shots on the perimeter.

    1. J-Dub421

Overall, yes I do. Willie is the only player I’ve seen at any level who can legitimately guard 1-5 on the court. AD is a better shot blocker obviously. Willie will guard all 5 positions on the same position, switching everything, and not lose a beat. It’s fascinating to watch.

    2. runningunnin.454

      NOPE. AD is the GOAT.

    3. J-Dub421

      *On the same possession.

    4. Iamheasyouarehe

I guess I misheard him, I thought he was saying better shot blocker but he said defender. I agree with you J-Dub.

    5. J-Dub421

Obviously AD is the better overall player, especially on offense.

    6. RealCatsFan

Anyone watch the UT game last night? That big kid they have reminds me a little of WCS, unfortunately. Very quick and mobile for a big.

    7. runningunnin.454

I watched the UT game; Missouri stayed with them pretty well at Knoxville.
Mizzou may be tough on the road.

    8. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I say AD. Remember him getting to the perimeter to block the UNCheat shot? There was also WCS’s tendency to disappear, and I’m sorry, but he disappeared in the Wescornsyn game (thanks RG for the spelling).

    9. J-Dub421

We’d have lost to Notre Dame in the Elite Eight without Willie though. He stayed with Jerian Grant step for step all the way down the court and made him shoot an awkward contested shot at the buzzer.

    10. RealCatsFan

cg, that block against UNCheat was epic. That game was his coming out party. I remember texting “Fear the Brow” to Mrs RCF right after it happened. Good times!

My cousin was right in the background in the crowd in one of the pictures of that block. His brother had the picture blown up and framed for him for his birthday, and got AD to sign it for him. Pretty cool.

    11. Realme

I loved how with both of them, opposing players would start to drive to the basket and then just change their minds.

    12. J-Dub421

Since we’re skipping down memory lane here… It was always fun watching Willie dunk all over teams and then mean mug them afterwards.

Also, the game against Ole’ Miss where Nerlens had 12 blocks. Their idiot guards kept trying to challenge Nerlens at the rim. It didn’t go well for them.

    13. Realme

That HOW DARE YOU look that Willie would give after dunking on someone was so great. And Nerlens was in foul trouble for most of that.

    14. J-Dub421
    15. RealCatsFan

One of my favorite WCS moments was against Louisville when he stole the ball and left the Louisville defender on the floor as he dunked it. He just looked back over his shoulder in disgust as he walked down the court. 🙂

    16. Realme

Yep! Especially because it was their beloved Montrezl.

  14. RealCatsFan

We have a snoring Johnny Short again! 😀

    1. RealCatsFan

Poor guy must be working stock crew at Kroger again.

    2. RealCatsFan

Johnny needs to be tested for sleep apnea.

  15. J-Dub421

Preach Stoops! Josh Allen should go #1 in the draft. End of discussion.

  16. RealCatsFan

Counties along I71 north? Oldham, Henry, Trimble, Carroll, Owen…

  17. RealCatsFan

Very bad deal hearing about JW tearing his Achilles tendon. That’s a devastating injury to recover from, especially for a guard who relies on his athleticism like John does. Major Bummer. Anyone who bitches about these kids leaving early for the NBA should take note of this. You just never know when something like this can happen – could have just as easily been when he was at UK.

    1. Realme

Yeah, it’s depressing. Hopefully the best care money can buy in 2019 will exceed expectations.

    2. J-Dub421

Boogie had the same injury and he’s looking pretty agile and athletic after his comeback. So, fingers crossed.

    3. Realme

Yeah, I’m pretty sure they guys had the same doomsday discussion about him, except they argued it’s harder for a big to rehab anything foot related.

  18. RealCatsFan

Sounds like Johnny finally woke up. 😀
