Kevin Knox’s family laughed at how no one thought he would come to Kentucky

It’s been almost a week since Kevin Knox shocked the recruiting world by picking Kentucky over Duke, Florida State, Missouri, and North Carolina, and yesterday, his father, Kevin Sr., opened up about the decision in an interview with CatsPause’s Chris Fisher. There’s a lot of good stuff in the Q&A, but most interesting to me were Knox Sr.’s comments about how so many experts thought this decision came out of left field. When Knox announced, not a single expert in 247 Sports’ Crystal Ball picked him to go to Kentucky; 87% of the predictions were for Duke, and the remaining 13% for North Carolina.

“We see everything,” Knox Sr. said, laughing when asked about the Crystal Ball picks. “We saw those and we would laugh.”

Even the UK staff didn’t know Knox was coming to Lexington until he announced his decision via Twitter on Saturday. Knox Sr. said the staff’s heartfelt reactions to the news made them feel as though he made the right decision.

“Coach Cal texted my wife. Our contact was Coach Kenny Payne and we were able to speak to him a little later. I don’t think he knew. He said his phone was getting blown up and said you’ll have to give me a minute. He was tearing up. It was a really good situation and a really good time. It’s good to feel wanted and feel like we definitely made the right decision.”

What about Calipari riding his hover board around the kitchen?

“That made us laugh. That made us laugh. The celebratory joyride. At the end of the day, it’s good to see your coach excited to want you. When you talk about relationships, it’s good to have that type of positive energy and you’re going to play for someone you trust with the handling of your son and be a part of something special.”

How could anyone not love Cal? But, here we are with a ton of fans that STILL dont see the bigger picture! Enjoy it folks, it will NEVER be like this again. A lot of fans are worrying about a kids decision that hasnt even been made yet… Dont worry about things out of your control, step off the ledge 😉

SSP you just keep on nailing it. Very well said. Mrs. TT you’re doing an awesome job, ignore the haters.

Tyler has received a huge backlash on here, so unfortunate that she has to deliver the news they want, then get mad when its not what they want to hear lol. I personally am sooooo excited about next year, regardless of who else doesn’t come. We have a legit squad that is going to put up some awesome numbers next year once they click. Why look at the glass half empty?

      Agree about TT!

I agree with everything you said, it would be funny to watch everyone back peddle if Diallo comes back and we get Mo, but if not you’re right, we have so much excitement to look forward to. Why worry about things we cannot control? Why can’t everyone stop speculating and wait for the decisions to be made?

TT is bar none the best writer on KSR. I enjoy her articles very much.

What fan base in college basketball is having as much excitement/fun/exposure than UK this offseason? Were spoiled brats lol

    6. Sentient Third Eye

Mrs. TT is the best writer on the site. Somes Drew is more fun with is gonzo stuff, but Tyler is tops in overall quality.

Let’s all enjoy the positive comments before Turdy, AG, and Code Red show up.
I suspect they live in their moms’ basements, sleep all day, and only come out at night.
      Keep the holy water handy.

Personally, I’m glad to see we’re getting back to celebrating Knox’s surprise commitment when there has been so much focus on Diallo. That focus is in many senses understandable, but it is good for it to be balanced. In fact, given what Knox’s father revealed, one could argue that Knox’s presence as a potential Durant type “2” might help push Diallo to take his chances in the draft. Maybe that’s incorrect, but I think the Diallo issue is really pretty straightforward when viewed from the perspective of the CEO, Cal. Cal is a relentless innovator, always looking for the next move, and the opportunity to serve the players. If Diallo goes pro in the style it seems like he might, then that is really just another feather in the cap for Cal, another way that he’s helped innovate a way for a kid to reach his dreams.

Way to think outside the box, really good perspective! Thats the answer I been looking for, not all this whiny he owes us BS.

Part of me wants Cal to ride that hoverboard out of the tunnel on Madness night…

    1. ukjaybrat

Part of me wants to see him riding the sidelines with it. can’t step outside the coaching box if you’re not standing on the ground !!!

    2. J-Dub421

I’m too scared he’ll fall and mess up a hip again.

Rick came out on a Harley once, Cal coming out on a Hover Board to Drakes music would be the greatest thing ever! Wearing the Calipari pack miss matched shoes of course!

Thanks for borrowing my joke from the other day Mathlete. 😉

I didn’t know the mismatched shoes are a thing until Fox wore them. Then literally a week or so later my daughter’s wearing mismatched socks to school, on purpose. Same style of mulicolored socks, but different color schemes.

    5. Mathlete

Sorry CG, didn’t see it the other day. Great minds think alike (and us too apparently!)

That is great that they found it so funny. I wonder if they also saw the first one when Brad was having to try to hold him up and couldn’t.

  6. Angelo

Cal is the greatest thing that has happened to Kentucky.

Has everyone forgotten the let down after all the excitement Pitino created, the boring BB we had to endure and the absolute disaster that was Billy G? Think about how long it took to get back on top of the basketball world with everyone else looking up and hating us. No coach has brought more excitement year in and year out to a program than Coach Cal. Don’t even bring up UNC, they should not have even been in the tournament. I am proud to be a member of the BBN and I love Coach Calipari and if you don’t, you better prepare yourself for the let down to come when he is gone.

Mrs. Cal does a really lazy dab in that GIF!
