Florida Blows By Kentucky To Take Game Two

UK Athletics

Kentucky’s offense faltered after Thursday’s impressive performance. Florida ran away with a 14-3 victory on Friday behind a big night from their starting pitcher Brady Singer. The Cats will need a big win tomorrow over Florida in order to win the SEC East. If LSU wins and UK loses, the two teams will share the title and UK will have the #1 seed in the SEC Tournament.

Recap

Singer and Florida owned this game from the start. UK was baffled by Singer’s fastball-slider combo as he struck out four of the first five batters of the game. Kentucky’s offense couldn’t find a groove before Florida stepped on the gas in the second. Mark Kolozsvary hit a ball to right that continued to carry out of the park for a two-run home run to give Florida the first lead of the night.

The long ball has been Logue’s Achilles Heel in 2017. Kolozsvary’s home run was the 18th allowed by Logue this year. The Gators continued to touch Logue in the third. Thanks to five straight hits with one out, Florida scored four runs in the third to take a 6-0 lead.

The bleeding would not stop for the UK pitching staff in the middle innings. After Logue exited, Alec Maley allowed a RBI single to J.J Schwarz in the fourth. Austin Keen was unable to quiet the Gators in the fifth as Florida led 11-0 heading into the sixth.

The frustration really boiled over in the top of the fifth for UK. Marcus Carson was called back to home after being hit by a pitch and not making an effort to get out of the way. Nick Mingione argued the call and was eventually ejected for his petition at home plate. He got his money’s worth before he took the walk off the field.

Florida gave Brady Singer more than enough run support. Even with Tristan Pompey ending the no-hitter in the sixth, Singer still cruised into the seventh inning. Kole Cottam blasted a two-run bomb to right to put UK on the board. Pompey added a RBI single to cut Florida’s lead to eight in the seventh. Singer finished the seventh inning and picked up the win on Friday.

For UK, first baseman Gunnar McNeill made his season debut on the mound. McNeill struck out two in the seventh but had to eat three runs in the bottom of the eighth as interim manager Todd Guilliams elected to save the rest of his bullpen for Saturday.

UK and Florida wrap up their series on Saturday with a 1 ET first pitch. The Cats will look towards Justin Lewis to lead them in the biggest game of the regular season.

First paragraph –> did you mean if LSU loses and UK wins, they share the SEC title?

Not making an effort to avoid the pitch….now there’s one they call every day. Though that is the rule, I haven’t seen that called in mlb since the ’60’s.

Getting hit in purpose isn’t an epidemic in MLB like it has become with some college teams. I’m not arguing for it against it, but we are leading the charge when it comes to getting hit on purpose. Seen it called a few times this year against us.

Btw, UF had to set a record for Punching Judy singles last night. Never seen so many bloopers find a hole in my life. I’ve seen 2 guys on their squad that slightly look like they can swing the bat.

It didn’t look like the ball even hit Carson, but I think the ump made the correct call. I just loved the way Mingione backed up his player in that situation. Hope he sticks around for a long, long time.

UK has to win and State has to beat LSU today. We beat LSU earlier so the title would be ours. If LSU wins today none of it matters, they’d be champs and they hold tiebreaker over Florida too.
