Tyrese Maxey reminds John Calipari of both Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray; ESPN’s Paul Biancardi agrees, using the same comparison in his latest scouting report of the five-star guard, who committed to Kentucky yesterday.
“At this point, Maxey is a true combination guard who is grooming himself nicely for the point guard position. He shows the leadership of former Kentucky great and NBA point guard Tyler Ulis and the scoring ability of another great Wildcat and NBA player, Jamal Murray. Each can score in a confident and comfortable way from all three levels plus the free throw line. Maxey plays with personality and is in attack mode; he compares in many ways to former Alabama guard Collin Sexton. Both truly love the game and compete with a smile on their face.”
After watching Sexton at the SEC Tournament, I am all on board with that comparison. Another reason to like Maxey: he liked hearing what he needs to improve rather than what he does well.
“Coach Calipari told me what I needed to hear about becoming a next level-player, he did not tell me what I wanted to hear,” Tyrese Maxey said. “That was very important to me.”
That’s a competitor. For more of Biancardi’s observations, get your wallet out and head on over to ESPN Insider. Or, just watch some more highlights.
