Kentucky fans singing National Anthem a capella when the audio fails before the game last night…cool. That’s a Sportscenter Top Ten.

    1. ClutchCargo

That was (almost) as cool as when the crowd at CWS/Kroger Field sang it a couple of years ago before a game.

    2. runningunnin.454

But it was cool because it was on foreign soil.

    3. ClutchCargo

      It sure was.

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Agree with all.

  2. Realme

    1. Isaiah Briscoe would have loved those shorts.
    2. I am trying not to freak out about the poor shooting.
    3. Man, there’s a lot of players to be excited about.

    1. runningunnin.454

Don’t sweat the shooting; first game jitters. We were rushing the shots.

    2. Realme

I know, but what if they have jitters in the tournament???? (Yes I know I sound crazy).

    3. runningunnin.454

      Ha ha ha ha….calm down.

    4. Iamheasyouarehe

Back away from the ledge Realme…ha ha

    5. Realme

Eeyore’s been getting in my head.

    6. RealCatsFan

First game after only being a team for a few weeks, weird sightlines in a glorified ballroom of a gym, adrenaline of playing in their first game as a Cat, distractions of being in the Bahamas… all kinds of reasons to not worry about poor shooting. I’m just enjoying it for what it is, and I think the coaches are too. This will be a fun team to watch.

    7. J-Dub421

Relax, that gym/ballroom is weird and has a really low ceiling, we won’t play is a space that weird again.

    8. ClutchCargo

When I said the other day that I’m not sweating these games, I stand by that statement. The most worrisome thing I saw was no defense whatsoever, but I know that will most assuredly get fixed, and it just hasn’t been a point of emphasis in practice yet. I’m just glad to have some basketball games to distract me from baseball and the start of NFL pre-season games, which I have zero interest in.

    9. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I’m afraid I’m #teamRealme on her point #2. Almost every time (maybe every time) we’ve come “Close but no cigar” in March has been poor shooting, and that includes the loss to UCONN in 14.

I hope it is just first game jitters.

    10. Realme

Just when I was starting to feel better, Chris!

  3. Realme

That post game show was weak.

  4. Realme

Dakich screaming at Brad’s shot to go in was hilarious.

    1. Iamheasyouarehe

I actually like Dakich doing color commentary.

    2. Realme

      Me too.

    3. ClutchCargo

Even as much as he loves to to poke BBN with a stick, I think Dakich is actually one of the best. At least he talks about the game he is working most of the time.

    4. RealCatsFan

I have no problem with Dakich at all. He is usually pretty straight up about what he says, even if sometimes it is not what BBN wants to hear. I used to like Bilas more than him, but Bilas has slid after his shameless ACC/Duke/UNC homerism.

    5. J-Dub421

Dakich is a troll online, but is good as an announcer.

    6. ClutchCargo

Dakich seems like a goofy neighbor you like to bust each others’ balls, but have a couple of beers with on the back deck.

    7. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And what Dakich said about The Goose: spot on!

  5. Iamheasyouarehe

Herro is taller than I thought and Hagans’ steals were absolutely criminal!

    1. J-Dub421

Ashton is quite the pick-pocket. I like it!

    2. ClutchCargo

He looks like Nerlens’ Mini-me the way he lets the guy get by him and then swipes the ball away from behind. Opposing guards need to keep the basketball in their front pockets when he is around. 🙂

  6. runningunnin.454

Herro’s resemblance to Rex is uncanny; the quick, high elevation on the jump shot , the ability to pull up and shoot over the defender. Cal just doesn’t want to put that pressure on him at this point.

    1. RealCatsFan

I agree – I think he actually even looks a little bit like Rex.

  7. runningunnin.454

Keldon Johnson had some great athletic moves; but, rushed his shots at the rim. He will get it together.

  8. RealCatsFan

OK, mod bot is on the rampage – I’ll try again…

If Nick Richards keeps playing like this, we need to put a no haircut rule in place.

    1. J-Dub421

He has a majestic mane like a lion. He definitely shouldn’t cut his hair.

    2. Realme

Best hair on the team, 2 years running. I’d be sad if he cut it.

    3. ClutchCargo

I move that we refer to Richards as Simba from now on.

  9. Iamheasyouarehe

How in the world did Matt survive his childhood? Bubble Boy?

  10. runningunnin.454

The refs missed some both ways; but, they were better than I see in the SEC and NCAA tournament…they didn’t call 70 fouls, and they didn’t take over the game.

    1. Realme

Don’t know any of their names. None of them was trying to get the attention of the camera, or make the game about them. If only it would be like that all season.

    2. ClutchCargo

As aggressively as I think our team will play, it worries me that all the starters will foul out on charging calls. Then I remember that we have an equally good squad sitting on the bench just waiting to come in.

    3. bigbluebanana

Dakich and Seth talked about it before the game, but the Refs were specifically instructed not to have any of our guys foul out. They also gave PJ multiple re-shoots after missed FT. They weren’t told to let us win or anything, but they were instructed on how to officiate.

    4. ClutchCargo

I was thinking those were lane violations, but you’re probably right.

    5. Realme

I don’t think they were instructed not to call fouls, or to let someone re-shoot free throws. I think they just stipulated that players could have more than 5 fouls without leaving the game. And lane violations makes a lot more sense.

    6. bigbluebanana

Maybe, but based off the reaction by the players on both teams, they weren’t lane violations. I could be wrong, but I only saw them call it on PJ’s free throws. I didn’t say they were instructed not to call fouls, just to let them play through. Either way, it allowed the game to have a good flow most of the time, but I’m not holding my breath that it’s indicative of how the officiating is going to be this season!

    7. Booby Petrino

those free throws he got to reshoot were definitely lane violations. they were obvious, you could see the guy jump out early. The were not just letting him reshoot for no reason lol

  11. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I missed the game, watched the first halp part on the archived stream and fell asleep late. 🙂
Not because it wasn’t fun…on the contrary, it was SO much fun to see a game instead of talk about it, and also fun to listen to the post game call in with talk about a game and not what the team will look like when we haven’t seen them, recruiting etc.

I was just tired. I plan to try to watch the rest tonight.

Anyway, yeah, I had to link it again:

    1. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And apparently I’m still tired…lots of grammar and spelling fails in that comment.

    2. J-Dub421

Catch a power nap before the game tonight.

    3. Natureboy42

I’ve officiated high school games in the Lexington area for 25 years. Started out and called many games with Bart Lenox and Brent Hampton and both are quality guys both on and off the floor. For all the people that like to blame the refs, yes there are some great ones and some not so good ones and they all Miss calls. But any coach worth his salt won’t truly blame an official for a loss. In all my years of calling games I’ve never missed a lay up it free throw or made a turnover. To get to the level those guys do it takes talent hard work and dedication. Typical Tipton trying to stir the pot when nothing’s on the stove. And that’s all I have to say about that.

    4. ClutchCargo

I hate games that start at 7, so thank goodness for DVR! I’m kind of a night owl, so I don’t mind waiting until the game is over to start watching it.

  12. J-Dub421

    Thoughts on the game/players:

Nick Richards – Wow! He played well on both ends and looked happy and confident. More of this Nick please!

Quade Green – rushed his shot a little, but his passing is still just beautiful. He was directing the rest of the team well and communicated a lot on both ends. His shots will start to fall, and I love everything else about his game.

EJ – a quiet but efficient night. He did a little of everything and played within himself. I was pleased.

Ashton Hagans is soooooo fast! His disruptiveness defensively was great and the offense will come.

I need a Herro! Tyler played well on both ends, and man can he get buckets. He’s going to be special.

    Quickley was solid all around.

Reid Travis is a grown *ss man! He is a monster on the glass. He pressed a little on offense so his shot didn’t fall, but that will work itself out as our guards figure out where/how he likes to receive passes.

    1. ClutchCargo

Travis can be that bulldog down low that all of Cal’s best Memphis teams had. That and his experience and maturity make him extra valuable to this team.

    2. J-Dub421

We’ve only practiced for about a week and a half, so there was some sloppy play. Defensively we have work to do, but they only worked on defense once or twice in practice, so I’m not worried. We had a bad shooting night and still won by 24, and it’s only August. This team already looks like they’re bonding and really like each other. This is going to be a fun year.

  13. runningunnin.454

The Bahamian team was exhausted the last 10-12 minutes of the game; our depth is going to wear opponents down

  14. runningunnin.454

Oh oh, hometown refs, and now I feel like a fool. But, I still say if we don’t know their names..they’re good.

    1. Realme

I bet that guy we just heard from doesn’t try to be the center of attention outside of our games either.

    2. J-Dub421

Agreed, good refs are the ones whose names I don’t know. There are hundreds of Division 1 refs. I only know the names of a handful of them for a reason.

  15. J-Dub421

We’ve played one game, won by 24, and I’m already annoyed with the negative portion of our fanbase.

  16. Realme

Matt went a whole show without reminding the others that he’s paying for everything!
