Matt please address the lower level “library” fans, this can’t continue to go on.

  2. runningunnin.454

It was brutal in the comments sections last night; where were you guys? Some of us tried to defend Cal and the team; but, you can’t argue with stupid.
What is sad is that these are grown men living vicariously through 18 year old kids playing a game; but, if they lose, the players and Cal are attacked. Shameful.
And, these people know nothing about the game…like I said last night, if any of them were to make a comment remotely suggestive of an intelligent life form, I would pass out.
They are immature and spoiled…spoiled by success, and they attack the man that gave us that success.
    The irony is palpable.

    1. Realme

We’re not as good this year. The SEC is better than usual. That will equal more losses. I didn’t have the energy to fight, but I did suffer through reading a lot of that garbage. People will literally complain about one and done, and about these players not being the usual level of elite in the same paragraph.

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I hear ya RG, but they were posting by the 100s, and after about 50 or 75 comments it’s white noise and I can’t read any more.

One quick though: I know it’s late, and Dan Schulman said “There’s still time but it’s February!” That awful loss to SC in 2014: MARCH 1ST!!!

    3. RealCatsFan

Sorry, I was at a Blues Traveler concert. My SIL had the end of the game up on her phone, so I got to watch our last minute or so of ineptitude. Getting swept by Tenn = lots of angry fans. At least when we have a down year and we lose to Louisville, it is usually only one time per year. Maybe we will improve dramatically and get the opportunity to take the snitches out in the SEC tourney. And maybe I will win the lottery… πŸ˜‰

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And as I noted below (sorry for the double post), we lost to UF by 18 or 20 a week later. Then came the tweak and the SEC tourney.

    5. J-Dub421

I avoided the comments section because there is no reasoning with the negative people. It’s an exercise in futility and I just didn’t feel like it.

    6. Realme

I think keeping the Show Thread civil and reasonable is the most we can hope for.

    7. ClutchCargo

rg, you already answered the question of where we were last night: “you can’t argue with stupid.” I have decided to reduce the stress in my life by not engaging in online fights with people I don’t even know. I might slip every now and then, though. Ha!

    8. runningunnin.454

Those are all fair points; I just think these people are giving the BBN a bad rep; it’s online and people see it.

    9. Realme

Agree, RG. It makes us look insane and hurts recruiting. They also are sucking the fun out of it for the rest of us, I think.

    10. J-Dub421

RG and RM, you’re both right. But you can’t tell those people that. They won’t believe you and will simply continue to vent their spleens. I try to counter them when I can, but last night I just did not have the energy.

    11. CATandMONKEY

I avoided the post-game shows and didn’t read the threads until 3 AM.

It’s truly amazing how many people who have never posted before, suddenly produce comment content that rivals that of an early 20th century Russian novelist.

  3. secrick

Got beat by a good Tenn. team last night. Couldn’t believe that kid hit that big 3. Game could have gone either way . Please Diallo and Vanderbilt please stop shooting threes.

    1. Realme

And PJ (thinking of the Missouri game).

  4. Realme

I support my team, and I still hope for a strong finish, even if it is hard to be positive at the moment. That said… It’s just us here, right? Have we regressed? Feels like we’re worse than a month ago. Keep your voices down, I’m trying to only ask reasonable people.

    1. runningunnin.454

I was astounded last night when Dickie V seemed to agree with me. He said the SEC is the strongest conference in the country, top to bottom; so there’s that. I think our players have lost their confidence in their shooting…of course, shot selection would help.
Kevin should forget the threes; just move without the ball, catch and shoot 10, 12, and 15 foot shots.

    2. secrick

I agree with you but the teams we are playing are pretty darn good. I don’t think Coach Cal and any one else in the country thought that a couple of the guys on this team would be no help at all. Both where recruited highly but have underachieved big time.

    3. RealCatsFan

Yep, I think it is safe to say we are certainly not improving. Did not watch the game, but saw someone post that certain aspects of the game were better – defense, out of bounds plays, etc. But overall, this team just doesn’t have the consistent scorers and court smarts to get it done.

    4. runningunnin.454

I saw some improvement; just not with shooting. They hustled, fought for the 50-50 balls, and Richards played with more focus. They hit the boards pretty well.
I believe it’s all shot selection; Diallo, Washington, Knox, and Vanderbilt need to stop shooting threes.
Leave that to Quade, Shai, and a few by Gabriel.

    5. J-Dub421

I think our defense has improved quite a bit, but there are still some lapses. I think some of it is confidence. I wish Knox would believe in himself more and play with more confidence; when he does, he’s really good. We just aren’t hitting shots. Heck, we only took 45 shots in the game.

  5. Realme

At least we have the distraction of signing day.

  6. Realme

I’m not going to trust Matt to tell me how to pronounce Smoke’s first name.

    1. ClutchCargo

Smoke’s HS AD pronounces it De-VOSS-ee-ay. I’m rolling with that

    2. Realme

Clutch, I’m not gonna trust you either if you’re going to tell me “Ka” is pronounced “De”. πŸ˜›

    3. ClutchCargo

Haha, yeah, I kind of screwed that up. The rest of it is right, though. Why can’t people at work just stop distracting me from the really important business of the day??

  7. Willis talkin bout....

Cal preached it all pre-season . We play “Positionless” basketball. Point Guard(s) don’t look to pass first . Our 2 Guard(s) don’t shoot well enough to open the inside or pass well enough to feed the post. Our Forwards want to be Guards, and our Centers are never in a position to get the ball… So we rarely can or will feed the post. We don’t have Offensive sets based on what these kids can actually do. And the Defense. Man to Man has looked better but is far from good. Leads to them getting tired and fouling and can’t be helping the Offensive effort. This year, they don’t need “the best version of themselves” BS.. None are individually good enough to carry the team. They need the best TEAM situations and lineups. Actual Offensive plays for what they can do.. and Defense they can actually play. For this team.. that is ZONE with the occasional MtoM mixed in. Just my opinion…

    1. runningunnin.454

Good points, and I agree in switching the defenses, and keeping the opponent off guard. But generally you use the zone against poor shooting teams (like us). UT shoots pretty well.

    2. J-Dub421

We are holding teams to bad shooting. TN was 5-21 from the three last night. We just can’t hit shots of our own.

  8. RealCatsFan

So just how hard was Hami being recruited, and what schools did we beat out to get him? So far, he might be the biggest disappointment. He was supposed to be the leader, since he had most of a year with the system under his belt.

  9. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I hear ya RG, but they were posting by the 100s, and after about 50 or 75 comments it’s white noise and I can’t read any more.

One quick thought: I know it’s late and they have to get a lot better than this if we want to make noise in March, and Dan Schulman said “There’s still time but it’s February!”

So, I looked up our 13-14 schedule. That awful loss to SC in 2014: MARCH 1ST!!! We then lost to UF by 18 or 20 just a week later. It was after that we got the famous tweak.

    1. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Ach! Reply fail. That was meant as a reply to RG above. I accidentally pressed Enter but didn’t think half of it appeared there.

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Or most of it.

  10. runningunnin.454

I support Cal’s decision to eschew the TO; that let’s the defense set up, and many coaches have that same philosophy. Even Barnes last night let his team play it out. But that’s me.

    1. ClutchCargo

I was completely fine with the no TO in that situation. Then I remembered that we actually don’t know what to do when the going gets tough. Pretty sure he will call a TO if that comes up in the next game.

    2. Realme

There have been a couple games this season where not calling a TO worked.

    3. Mc12

I disagree. Maybe at first, but when they look disoriented and lost you have to take the timeout, calm them down, and draw up a play for them.

  11. RealCatsFan

So is it safe to say that our basketball team has started to resemble the football team? Lots of close games that could go either way, and some questionable coaching decisions. And losing to in-conference rivals – grrrr. Well, at least we creamed Louisville.

  12. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Okay, I’ll crack my pun one more time: UK gets a Smoke!!!

    1. RealCatsFan

I just hope that we can say that we “Smoked” the competition at some point.

    2. secrick

“Smoke” em if you got em.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      ^^^Yes^^^.

I’m pumped partly because Wetumpka is only 15 minutes from Montgomery, so he can carry on the central Alabama tradition from Austin McGinnis & Jalen Whitlow.

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

That was a reply to RCF. πŸ™‚

    5. RealCatsFan

cg, that name is stuck in my head because I always see it on the highway sign when driving on I-65 on my way to Florida.

    6. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Have you seen the sign for the town called “Nymph”? No lie. It’s north of Mobile, so you probably miss it if you turn off on the Gulf Shores Parkway or at Andalusia to go to Ft. Walton/Destin.

    7. RealCatsFan

It’s been a while, but I think on the way down we usually take the Georgiana exit south of Montgomery and then a lot of back highways down to Destin. Kind of sucks that there is not a major interstate that goes closer to that part of Florida to give more of a direct shot. When you hit southern Alabama you think you are almost there, but then it takes at least an additional 3 1/2 hours to make it to Destin because of all the back roads. Back in the day we used to take highway 331, and that thing was a death trap – 2 lanes most of the way, and it took forever if there was any traffic. Glad we found a better route.

    8. ClutchCargo

RCF, I also hate that drive to Destin. But I also kind of appreciate it because I feel like it keeps a little bit of the crowd away.

    9. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Yes, I meant to say Georgiana exit, but you go through Andalusia as well.

BTW, Georgiana is the home town of none other than Hank Williams. Usually RG brings the music trivia.

  13. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I told my Auburn colleague about the guys joking about having an RB named Smoke and a QB named Gunnar. Then I said “Hoak to Smoke!” A flea flicker with “Smoke to Hoak!”

Then my coworker said “Do the Hoakie Smokey!” LOL!

    1. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And remember the QB named Jeff Smoker? He said way back then we should have gotten him since Joker was our coach (or OC). Joker Smoker!

    2. runningunnin.454

You have an Auburn colleague? Ouch, you may be in for a tough time.
Ask him how you know there’s a parade in Auburn……all the tractors have their lights on.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Yeah, he’s enjoying needling me about them being ahead of UK. It’s all in good fun.

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I did RG, and he said to tell you with 1 phone call he can brick your iPhone. I said “Huh?”. He said “Tim Cook”. lol

    5. runningunnin.454

LOL, did you hear about the Auburn frog experiment? They said jump, and it jumped four feet, they cut off two legs and said jump, it jumped two feet. They cut off the other legs, and it didn’t move.
Conclusion, “frogs with no legs can’t hear”.

  14. RealCatsFan

So – the Tai situation: Anyone think that Cal is realizing that one or more of his bigs that he thought would be leaving are now probably going to hang around, and we needed some room on the roster? Total conjecture on my part, of course, and we don’t have any facts yet on what went on with the “bodyguard” thing, but makes me wonder a little bit too. I don’t think Tai was coming back either way.

    1. runningunnin.454

Tai can probably play pro all somewhere in the world, where they’re not so strict with the traveling call.
He traveled every time he touched the ball, even standing right under the goal.
Wonder why he thought he needed a bodyguard? That’s really bizarre.

    2. Realme

It’s still an assumption at this point that he won’t return next year. Totally weird story though.

    3. J-Dub421

He’s 6’10” and 250! Why on earth would he need a bodyguard?

    4. ClutchCargo

I don’t think it’s a given that he is gone.

    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      Mike Tyson had bodyguards.

    6. ClutchCargo

He might think he needs protection from someone else who is armed. 6-10 and 250 is no protection from that. Just guessing, though. I really have no idea.

    7. J-Dub421

I’m pretty sure sorority girls aren’t packing.

    8. RealCatsFan

I was standing at the Blues Traveller concert last night, and there was a group of pretty big dudes standing in front of us. I am 6-foot, and these guys were probably about 6-1 or so, so that I could still see the stage pretty well, but the ladies who were there with us had trouble seeing over them. Made me appreciate that we didn’t have half the UK basketball team standing in front of us!

    9. ClutchCargo

I’m sure the sorority girls aren’t what the bodyguard is for, though. He might carry a different type of protection from them.

    10. runningunnin.454

Ha ha, maybe he saw the ’50’s double feature, “Sorority Girl” and “Motorcycle Gang”. John Carpenter loved them. Alfalfa of Little Rascals was in Motorcycle Gang.

    11. RealCatsFan

“This is my rifle. This is my gun. One is for killing. The other’s for fun.” What was that from, Full Metal Jacket?

  15. Laker Cat 18

Maybe someone else can throw their opinion in on this. I don’t think Wenyen knows where he is supposed to be on offense at all. I can’t count the number of times he is standing right next to someone else. There are times we have little to no movement on offense. We run the old school 4 corners when SGA has the rock at the top of the key. That worked well last night until it finally didn’t.

    1. runningunnin.454

Definitely too much standing on offense; need to have constant motion.

  16. RealCatsFan

So Cal’s picture is representative of 90% of the fan base right now.

  17. RealCatsFan

I would venture that selective camera shots at certain points of just about ANY game could make fans look apathetic. When you have timeouts and breaks in the action, yeah, people are going to stand there with arms folded and looking at phones, etc. Did they show the crowd cheering when we made a run?

    1. Realme

All true, but our crowd (the lower sideline folks anyways) has no idea how to encourage the team when things are bad. They only ever cheer when given a reason to by the team. Other crowds out there cheer in order to pick their teams up and bother the opponents.

    2. runningunnin.454

The lower arena is jut too sedate…or maybe sedated. Watch the fans at IU and Wisconsin; and, they have losing records. Watch the fans practically anywhere else, Iowa State or Michigan State, etc.
When I was at UK, and I would cheer and yell and scream at the refs, they would turn and glare at me.
I just said, “turn back around, you’re missing the game”.

    3. J-Dub421

We need luxury boxes. I really think that would solve a lot of this problem. That, and the SEC needs to drop their ridiculous “no alcohol” policy.

    4. RealCatsFan

J-Dub, Louisville has both of those in the YUM Center, and I think they have some issues with fans not making enough noise at their games (at least when they DO have fans in there. πŸ˜‰ )

    5. J-Dub421

It would move all the big donor away from the “riff-raff” and could move more of the student section and normal fans down around the court. And lube them up a little.

  18. runningunnin.454

It’s somewhat amusing; but, our winning percentage this year is 0.71; for the people wanting Billy Donovan, that was his winning percent his entire career at Florida. I watched No. 5 Xavier last night, and they had to go to overtime to beat an unranked team with our exact record.
SEC and National parity is real…the tournament is going to be wild.

  19. BIGBLUEWOODSHOP

What was Bunny talking about with Dan Issell? I missed it.

    1. runningunnin.454

That he is in Louisville working toward getting a pro team.

  20. RealCatsFan

Matt is talking about the worst UK basketball players – I think you might have to put Brad on there, unfortunately. Doubt if we will see him on the court the rest of the year.

  21. ClutchCargo

This is one of the main problems I have with Mitch as AD. What is his problem with UK men’s basketball coaches?

    1. ClutchCargo

I’m operating off the assumption that the rumors are accurate that the hiring of Cal was done without his direct involvement.

    2. secrick

I think you hit the nail on the head . RUMORS

  22. Realme

Well I haven’t got much work done, but I am cheered up now…

  23. Laker Cat 18

Going pro: Knox should go. SGA should go in my opinion, but selfishly I hope he doesn’t. Diallo shouldn’t go, but he will. He is most comparable to Goodwin, Teague, & Briscoe with my thoughts on the draft. Vanderbilt should stay, I think he will & I think he improves greatly next season. Quade should definitely stay. Richards may be a 4 year player.

    1. runningunnin.454

Just my opinion, but I think they all should return to school; they’re just not ready. Last year, Miles Bridges of MSU returned, and he was better prepared for the league than our guys.

    2. J-Dub421

Richards is on the WCS path. A late comer to basketball and a late bloomer with a lot of talent and athleticism who is raw and will take a few years to develop.

  24. Realme

They said last night we got our first fast break points since West Virginia. How in the world did that happen with this group (Shai for steals, athletes for run outs)?

    1. runningunnin.454

Last night, we were firing long outlet passes; but, then we would hesitate and not take it to the rim. Then the defense was able to get set.

  25. Laker Cat 18

Fun Fact: Morakinyo Williams currently plays professionally in Norway. He’s averaging 20 points and 11 boards per game.

  26. ClutchCargo

I really think it’s asinine for a UK fan show to be debating who the worst UK player was. Not a fan of that at all.

    1. Realme

Maybe in August that would be interesting, but not on signing day.

  27. Realme

Gender reveal parties are one party too many.

    1. ClutchCargo

I always laugh when I see the tannerite gender reveal shooting targets at Academy Sports. πŸ™‚

    2. J-Dub421

Exactly, it’s only relevant to the parents. No one else really cares.

  28. classof68

Ryan wants to fire that guy for doing something stupid. If that’s his standard for dismissal, he’d be fired every day.
