John Calipari is starting his week off strong by visiting the nation’s top two juniors. According to Corey Evans, Cal will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Memphis, Tennessee to do in-home visits with Vernon Carey and James Wiseman, five-star big men who alternate No. 1 and No. 2 in the 2019 rankings.
Wiseman has long been Kentucky’s top target in the 2019 class, where it appears he will stay. Whether or not he stays at Memphis East or transfers to a different prep school outside of Memphis for his senior year remains to be seen. (With Penny Hardaway lurking, Kentucky would obviously prefer the latter.)
Meanwhile, this will be Calipari’s second trip to see Carey, a 6’9″ 245 lbs. center, in the spring recruiting period. Carey hosted Mike Krzyzewski a day after hosting Calipari last weekend. Duke, Miami, and Michigan State are considered his frontrunners, but Cal is obviously doing his best to change that.
Florida and Memphis in one day? Just another Monday for John Calipari.
UPDATE: Not so fast, according to Adam Zagoria. Carey’s dad says there is no visit today.
Kentucky’s John Calipari has no plans to meet with 2019 Vern Carey today, his father tells me. Reports had them meeting.
