BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Tuesday Defensive Breakdown (Florida)

A lot of attention has been paid to the offensive performance on Saturday but I think the defense might have been the story of the game.  Time and again, UK forced Florida into tough spots, the tackling was great all game, and beyond the prevent D touchdown in the 4th quarter, they controlled the game.  If UK can continue the defensive performances from the first 2 weeks, I think the offense can have its ups and downs and UK can still have a wonderful season:

1st Down
Run: 13 rushes, 59 yards
Pass: 6-17, 77 yards, 1 TD

Combined Season Stats
Run: 28 rushes, 95 yards, 1 TD
Pass: 11-26, 115 yards, 1 TD, 1 sack

Recap: After a scratchy start where the Gators were getting what they wanted on 1st down, UK absolutely buckled down for much of the 2nd half.  After starting 3-4 to start the game on 1st down, Franks combined to go 3 for 13 the remainder of the game, including a garbage time 19-yarder.

2nd Down
Run: 11 rushes, 50 yards
Pass: 4-9, 59 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 2 sacks, 1 fumble

Combined Season Stats
Run: 26 rushes, 111 yards
Pass: 9-16, 92 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 2 sacks, 1 fumble

Recap: On their longest 4th quarter drive, UF had 49 yards on 2nd down plays alone, 4 plays total.  On the other 18 2nd down plays they ran for the entire game, they have 60 yards total, not including yardage lost on sacks.  And obviously the final play of the game will go down in UK lore.

3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Run: 1 rush, 21 yards (converted 0 of 1)
Pass: 4-7, 38 yards (converted 4 of 7)

Overall Season Statistics
Run: 3 rushes, 30 yards (converted 0 of 3)
Pass: 9-14, 92 yards, 1 sack (converted 5 of 15)

Recap: Maybe the only real negative you can point to on the defense was 3rd down and long pass defense.  Four conversions out of just 7 attempts won’t cut it long term.  Cats kept those completions to 10-15 yards, so they weren’t too badly hurt but something that was a struggle Saturday.

3rd Down and Short (5 yards or less)
Run: 1 rush, 1 yard (converted 1 of 1)
Pass: 2-3, 40 yards (converted 2 of 3)

Overall Season Statistics
Run: 6 rushes, 30 yards (converted 5 of 6)
Pass: 4-6, 52 yards (converted 3 of 6)

Recap: You’d like to hold your opponents to around 50% on these kind of situations.  Cats sat at 75% against Florida and 66% for the season.  Would like to see a couple bigger stops and will likely need them later this season.
