BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Retired Jersey Week (Rex Chapman or Keith Bogans)

*This post was originally put up yesterday but the poll had an error so we are giving everybody another chance to vote on this interesting debate

Since this week basically has nothing going on, I brought back something I did years ago debating players who were “on the fringe” of having their jerseys retired at UK.  It’s not something that the university does very often.  In fact, only 2 players who played since 1992 have had their jerseys retired: Jamal Mashburn and Tony Delk.  But there have been plenty of stars who have come through Lexington since that time and just before that time and I think it is a fun conversation to debate who deserves it more.  Yesterday, the poll was opened to debate John Wall against Wayne Turner.  The ultimate “one and done vs. team player” debate.  And the fans spoke:

Both the votes and the comments strongly favored Turner over Wall, which again shows that while this may be a “Players First” program now, fans don’t necessarily support that completely, instead favoring the 4-year team guys in some circumstances.  What is truly amazing is there are 12% of people who voted who think NEITHER guy belongs up there, either showing there is a bigger group who have unbelievable standards or 12% of people are just losers who vote for the worst possible option.

Nonetheless, the way I am doing this is by position.  Yesterday were the point guards.  Today, we look at two shooting guards who absolutely made their mark on this program, albeit in different ways.  Rex Chapman vs. Keith Bogans.  Chapman was the rockstar of all rockstars.  An in-state kid with the hype coming into the program that was backed up by his play on the court.  His style of play and personality endured him with fans forever.  But he only stayed for 2 years, in part to escape the probation coming down the pike.  Keith Bogans was a 4-year player and statistically, is a no brainer.  Top 5 all-time in scoring, instant impact from the day he stepped foot on campus.  But nowhere near the personality as Rex and sometimes even a more disliked figure on the team.  A little breakdown of both

REX CHAPMAN (1986-88)
Points: 1,073 (50th all-time)
Assists: 220 (40th all-time)
Steals: 89 (39th all-time)
-2-time All-SEC
-SEC Tournament MVP (1988)
-#8 overall NBA Draft Pick

TEAM RESULTS
1986-87: 18-11 (1st Round NCAA Tournament)
1987-88: 25-5 (SEC Tournament Champions, Sweet 16)

KEITH BOGANS (1999-2003)
Points: 1,923 (4th all-time)
Rebounds: 553 (38th all-time)
Assists: 314 (15th all-time)
Steals: 155 (12th all-time)
-SEC Player of the Year (2003)
-3rd team All-American (2003)
-SEC Tournament MVP (2003)

TEAM RESULTS
1999-2000: 23-10 (SEC Champions, NCAA 2nd Round)
2000-2001: 24-10 (SEC Champions, SEC Tournament Champions, Sweet 16)
2001-2002: 22-10 (Sweet 16)
2002-2003: 32-4 (SEC Champions, SEC Tournament Champions, Elite 8)

MY TAKE
I think Bogans should and is an absolute lock for jersey retirement on the sheer numbers.  You don’t keep the guy 4th on your scoring list out of the rafters.  And it’s my opinion he should be the next guy up there.  So this one is an easy one for my to have a preference for.  The question to me is whether Rex belongs there or not and it’s a tough one.  If Rex had been a 4-year player, his stats would likely have been better than most anybody who has played at the school.  He would have truly been one of this school’s legends.  But he didn’t stay 4 years and his teams won 2 NCAA games in 2 years and went on probation.  If we say that Turner belongs there over Wall because of the team, then you have to say the team results for Rex are a little bit of a deterent.

With that said, if given a vote, I would still put Rex up there for his 2-year run at the school and his support of the school after.  He is blue through and through.  His impact on the program continues to this day and while I do think there is an argument to keep him out and whether his career was truly as elite as those up there already (or Bogans), I still think I would lean yes on him.  Also, both Bogans and Chapman are currently in the UK Hall of Fame, which is the first step to jersey retirement.

But in the case of this argument, Bogans hands down and I think he should be next in line.  Here is the poll to vote:

Wow. I’ve always loved and respected Keith’s game, but I didn’t realize just how his numbers stack up against some of the other greats.

This one seems a no brainer.

Bogans is the most under appreciated player ever at uk. I think he goes up before anyone else, I’m sure cm Newton’s are up there if not need to be NOW!Wayne turner who I watched as a kid believe he should be there as well. He ran the team and did it n a way uk should value. Rex on just his time at uk is a no brainer ,a fan favorite but who he is and things he’s done might keep him out. I was a toddler when he played so I go off what my dad says and watch old tape and he was realllyyyyy good. If your a white boy from Kentucky and dream of wearing blue and going nuts he did it. Wall and Davis might go up as the faces of the cal era in 10 years after cals gone a few years. Maybe cal gets overall 1st pick jersey hung or a superclass that gets drafted and gets a jersey hung. Think we already have some of those options (both). Also is tayshaun prince number there I’ll have to look maybe a debate on jorts or Patrick Patterson getting there jersey retired???? How about enes Kanter vs eloy Vargas ??? I could do this all day. How bout is there a jersey that needs to be dropped like basil Hayden I checked him out and I hope he got there for his whiskey if that’s him that made it, then he can stay!

Is it only me or is this site taking forever to load now? Inspected the page with Chrome and it’s pulling over 2,000 hits to load up all the advertisements and user tracking information. Don’t think the site it GDPR compliant. LOL.

It’s bc they police the site like crazy!!! And a lot of our comments get deleted.

T Prince is the player that should go up next, IMO. Bogans is a very close 2nd.

    1. katfan33

But Bogans has better numbers and was a better player than Tayshaun.

  5. Duuuuuude

Loved Rex. One of my fav’s but Bogans deserves to be there. Rex played only 2 years.

    1. terwilliger

Agree completely. To me, the only guy who played two years or less that you can justify retiring is AD, simply because he accomplished everything imaginable during his college career. That said, I have to agree with 007Ken that, although Bogans definitely belongs, T Prince should be next!

This is such an awesome thing to do during the slow part of the year . Thanks bro ! You’re the man bti

  7. michaelb

BOTH . I understand how one could vote against Rex on this but he still kicked @$$ big time .

  8. Challen

    Ruh Roh!

The new poll is already closed. It looks like Bogans wins with a single vote. 🙂

    1. Wade

And Colin kaepernick said voting doesn’t matter.

  9. ukbradstith

    How do you vote?

    1. Jesus H. Chrysler

      U don’t. It’s done. 10 is in

  10. UKfansNKY

Bogans for sure! Chapman shouldn’t even be considered, disgrace to the University!

    1. jzoneblue

Yes, why say coach is leaving on the big game day. One must ask for forgiveness to truly obtain forgiveness. With seeking forgiveness, our pride can get in the way, because asking for forgiveness requires us to humble ourselves before those we have offended.

I love these debates. It’s Keith and by a decent margin. However, Tayshaun Prince is the next in line for jerseys to be retired. Class guy and was an All American level player for 2-3 yrs in blue. He’s possibly the most under appreciated ever to wear the UK uniform!

Chapman most likely cost us a championship in 2014 when he tweeted Cal was going to the Lakers “win or lose, it’s a #DoneDeal”. I’m sure he was betting on UConn. Chapman should never even be allowed on school property IMHO

    1. Memphis UK Cat

Dude, this is such BS. He apologized.

    2. Curtis Lowe

^^ one of the 5% right there

  13. Memphis UK Cat

They both do. Rex was one of my favorite of all time

    1. ziplock

Meanwhile, Chapman counts the cash from his UConn bet and now is “forgiven”, how convenient!

BTI you’re the worst. Quit KSR again, please. You are a waste. You bring absolutely nothing to the table. You have no value.

I hope that drives the point home. F*** you, BTI.
