BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Monday Morning Playcalling Breakdown (Vanderbilt)

Each Monday I will break down the offensive numbers in hopefully a more interesting way that you normally see.  I like to see if there are certain situations where the UK offense excels, based on down and distance.  I will also keep a running count of the stats over the course of the season. Against Vanderbilt, another dynamic rushing attack led to a comfortable win.  They didn’t need to throw the ball too much but were effective when they did.  Lots of positives:

1st Down
Pass: 4-5, 45 yards
Run: 25 rushes for 146 yards (5.8 ypc), 5 TD

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 64-95, 788 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT, 8 sacks for -47 yards (2 fumbles lost)
Run: 179 rushes for 896 yards (5.0 ypc), 6 TD (4 fumbles lost)

Breakdown: Another incredible game on the ground for the Cats, including all 5 touchdowns they scored against Vandy.  While that is just an oddity, the production the Cats have had on 1st down in the last 4 weeks has not been.  Good first down production opens everything else up, which has been shown by the large amount of points UK is scoring.
–––––––––––––––––-
2nd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 5-6, 30 yards
Run: 9 rushes for 41 yards (4.6 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 41-62, 490 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT, 4 sacks for -27 yards
Run: 78 rushes for 338 yards, 1 TD (4.3 ypc)

Breakdown: Not anything special here.  15 plays for 71 yards.  A slew of 3 and 4 yard gains.  But efficient.

2nd Down and Short (5 yards or fewer)
Pass: 1-1, 6 yards
Run: 5 rushes for 24 yards (4.8 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 11-17, 116 yards, 1 TD
Run: 49 rushes for 244 yards, 6 TD (5.0 ypc)

Breakdown: Much like 2nd and long, Cats were solid but not spectacular.
––––––––––––––––––
3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 2-4, 60 yards, 1 sack for -4 yards (converted 2 of 5)
Run: 3 rushes for 25 yards (8.3 ypc) (converted 1 of 3)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 26-50, 348 yards, 1 TD, 7 sacks for -45 yards (converted 18 of 57)
Run: 18 rushes for 153 yards (8.5 ypc), 2 TD (converted 7 of 18)

Breakdown: Cats converted 3 long 3rd downs out of 8 chances, a very nice percentage.  2 of those conversions led to 10 points.

3rd Down and Short (5 yards or fewer)
Pass: 1-1, 32 yards (converted 1 of 1)
Run: 3 rushes for 3 yards (1.0 ypc) (converted 1 of 3)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 11-22, 131 yards, 1 TD, 3 sacks for -17 yards (converted 11 of 25)
Run: 33 rushes for 197 yards, 3 TD (6.0 ypc) (converted 19 of 33)

Breakdown: It was an awesome game for UK so it doesn’t matter but UK continued to struggle on 3rd and short.  Didn’t matter against Vandy though.
