BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Cats Coming Off a Bye, Results Are Telling

Image result for bye bye bye

This week is a chance for the UK football team, and fanbase, to take a breath.  Reset the emotions a little bit following a discouraging loss to Texas A&M.  Obviously the season has been a wild success so far and the schedule gives the Cats some opportunities for bigger things.  But just how will they handle the bye week?  Vanderbilt appears to be far inferior to the Cats this season and the ideal hope would be the Cats take the 2 weeks and hammer the Commodores.  But just how has UK fared following a bye week?  Below are the results since 1998 (teams that went to a bowl game are in bold):

1998 (5-3): WON, Mississippi State 37-35
2000 (2-6): LOST, Mississippi State 35-17
2001 (1-1): LOST, Florida, 44-10
2001 (1-6): LOST, at Mississippi State 17-14
2002 (4-1): LOST, South Carolina 16-12
2002 (7-4): LOST, Tennessee 24-0
2003 (2-3): LOST, South Carolina 27-21
2003 (4-5): LOST, Vanderbilt 28-17
2004 (2-8): LOST, Tennessee 37-31
2005 (1-3): LOST, South Carolina 44-16
2005 (1-4): LOST, Ole Miss 13-7
2006 (3-4): WON, Mississippi State 34-31
2007 (6-3): WON, at Vanderbilt 27-20
2008 (3-0): WON, Western Kentucky 41-3
2008 (6-5): LOST, at Tennessee 28-10
2009 (1-0): WON, Louisville 31-27
2010 (6-5): LOST, at Tennessee 24-14
2011 (2-4): WON, Jacksonville St. 38-14
2012 (1-9): WON, Samford 34-3
2014 (2-1): WON, Vanderbilt 17-7
2014 (5-6): LOST, at Louisville 44-40
2016 (3-3): WON, Mississippi State 40-38
2017 (5-1): LOST, at Mississippi State 45-7

Overall Record: 9-14
Record for Bowl Teams: 6-3 (wins over Mississippi St (x3), Vanderbilt, WKU, Louisville)
Record for Non-Bowl Teams: 3-11 (wins over Jacksonville St, Samford, Vanderbilt)

This team is obviously headed to a bowl and they are very likely to beat Vanderbilt.  But I think it is interesting that our best teams used the 2 weeks to buckle down and take care of business.  All three of the losses by bowl teams came on the road, against ranked opponents, and two of the three games were highly competitive.

I think it will be very telling what the 2nd half of this season will be like, and how this team responds after a loss, how they play against Vanderbilt.  If the Cats come out flat, that will be highly disappointing.  I don’t expect that to happen because this team seems to have a competitive fire that I haven’t seen very often at UK.  My best bet is these guys are pissed.  Pissed at how Texas A&M went and pissed people continue to doubt them.  I expect a pissed off UK team to use that bye, get into a nice aggressive lather, and whip Vanderbilt in 2 weeks.
