Well, that was something. The Kroger Field media room had plenty of highs, lows and hi-jinks in an hour-and-a-half. Before players take the field for interviews, here’s a little bit of what you may have missed.
— Stoops Believes it’s His Best Defense Yet. The head coach has had talented units before, but there’s always been holes at different positions and inconsistent play. If experience solves consistency problems and depth fills the gaps, Stoops may finally have the defense he’s always wanted at UK.
— A Ton of Confidence in the D-Line. Stoops is confident in his group because the Cats have never been deeper in the trenches. One player I previously forgot about, Tymere DuBose, has proved a lot to the coaches this summer. Stoops and House believe the Cats can go two to three deep at every position.
— Zy’Aire Hughes is a Burner. The McCracken County native hasn’t really played yet, but he could be an explosive offensive weapon this fall. A former cornerback, after flipping to the other side of the football, Eddie Gran and Vince Marrow believe he has what it takes to take the top off a defense.
— Dorian Baker is on a Rep Count. They know what Dorian can do. They don’t need him to prove anything. They just need him healthy.
— Paintsville Football Broadcasts are the Best. I’ll be tuning in this fall.
— Jordan Jones is Ready to Go. The inside linebacker has been cleared to return to practice. They’re unsure if he’ll have any limitations until they put on pads next week.
Behind him there is an impressive group of freshmen — Chris Oats and DeAndre Square — but Matt House did not want to raise expectations before they took the field. “We’ve got to see him (Oats) in a college football practice first, before we put any expectations on him.”
