Mark Stoops credits Benny Snell’s recent success to detail-oriented film work with Eddie Gran

In the words of Mark Stoops, the Kentucky Wildcats played their “most complete game all year” on Saturday when they took down Vanderbilt on the road.

During Stoops’ call-in show tonight, he talked to Tom Leach about how much Kentucky’s dominant run game allowed the Cats to take a big lead and never look back. When asked about the offensive line’s improvement under John Schlarman to help create holes for the run game this year, Stoops said he thinks they found the “right formula” and it has helped in a big way.

“There’s no doubt, but it’s about how this all fits together. Early on, we were trying to find that right formula with the offensive line. You have to get into the season and get going. Even last year when we found that winning recipe, it takes some time to find the right guys, how we’re going to run the ball with formations, personnel, etc.,” he said.

Though the offensive line deserves a ton of credit for their massive improvements over the last few weeks, Stoops believes Benny Snell has put in a tremendous amount of work in the film room with Eddie Gran to perfect his craft.

“It’s always obvious to talk about the offensive line, but Benny really has been more detailed,” Stoops said. “People don’t credit Eddie Gran enough for running backs, and he’s coached some of the best running backs to ever play college football. He’s been a running backs coach first and foremost for many, many years, and I think he brought Benny in a few weeks back and just talked about the detail it takes. He put that all together, and we’re having much more success running the ball.”

When breaking down film with Jeff Piecoro, Snell credited Gran for his recent improvements, as well.

Stoops also touched on the other side of the ball and how much Kentucky’s pass defense improved this week, specifically with forcing major turnovers.

“We had much better vision this week, much more precise in our drops in our coverages, and we made plays on the football, and that was the biggest improvement,” said Stoops. “We’ve gotta improve on that these last couple games.”

When asked about UK safety Mike Edwards, Stoops talked about how much his versatility has helped the secondary find their groove.

“Mike is really playing good football. He’s so versatile. He hadn’t played much nickel until this year, and we’re playing him down low closer to the box. He’s doing more things, and he’s been very steady.”

Benny is a great player. But in all reality his yardage improved because we played some teams with horrible run defense. Let’s see what he does on Saturday against Georgia.
