Kentucky is headed to the Citrus Bowl

It is official. Kentucky is headed to Orlando in a New Year Day’s matchup against the 12th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions in the Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium at 1:00 pm ET.

This is Kentucky’s first appearance in the Citrus Bowl, and it’s only the sixth time the Cats will take on the Nittany Lions. The last time Kentucky squared off against Penn State was 1999 in the Outback Bowl which resulted in a 26-14 Penn State victory that would later be vacated.

This is only the third time in school history Kentucky has gone to three straight bowl games. The other two times? The 50’s with Bear Bryant as the head coach and ten years ago when Rich Brooks lead Kentucky to four straight bowl games until Joker Phillips took over in 2010 after Brooks’ retirement following the 2009 Music City Bowl.

Kentucky will face a familiar foe across the sideline in former Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin. In his three years at Vandy, Franklin led them to three straight bowl berths and a 3-0 record against the dreadful Cats with a combined score of 100-14. This season Franklin has led the Penn State Nittany Lions to a 9-3 Record and third place in the Big Ten with quarterback Trace McSorley.

Tickets for the Citrus Bowl are starting at $51.00 on TicketMaster. Get in there, folks.

Love this match up. Will be a very good game. James Franklin is one helluva coach. Penn State has multiple 5 stars on their roster.

Still think we should be playing Mich in Catlanta but not a bad consolation. We get Mickey, Seaworld, Universal and our C-A-T-S to bring in a New Year.

20 years to the day…. A win here and I’m going to lose it.

YES.. so right WildCatBlue2008! REVENGE TIM COUCH and our 1998 WILDCATS! Go Big Blue!

I was at that Outback Bowl, was a great start but not much to celebrate after going up 7-0. Think this version of the C-A-T-S will have a different outcome.

    We will be ready.

I sure hope someone will sit down with Eddie Gran and help him construct a solid offensive agenda, otherwise, if left up to Eddie, we may not score. In that case, GO DEFENSE, we trust in you to keep PSU out of the end zone. Go get em BIG BLUE!

Our physicality will dominant. UK-33 PSU-20

I like the matchup. If we can contain the QB I like our chances. Too bad JoPa isn’t the coach because I’d love to beat his ass again. We did it in Lexington and got HOSED in PA! I sure hope all of our guys play because we’ll need them. I never liked Franklin when he was at Vandy and still don’t. Hell, who couldn’t win at Penn St!

Actually, Franklin won at Vandy; finished with two consecutive 9 win seasons. I remember UK beating Paterno in ’76 and ’77. JoPa was a gracious loser, when asked about the loss after one of those games, he said, “what can I say, they kicked our butts”.

Where did you guys get that Citrus Bowl graphic? This year’s title sponsor is VRBO.

Very exciting. Once I hear for sure Allen is playing, I will order my tickets.

Had my order in with UK Athletics day after they sent the email. Josh is great but did not do this by himself. I think he plays, but if not, Boogie, Oats, Square, Josh P and so on. We got guys that can play.

This is the matchup I was hoping for; now let’s go get ’em.

Big name opponent on News Years Day……who among us would not have gladly accepted that result on September 1 ??

You are correct. I still wish we could have eeked out one more point in regulation at A&M, or at leas shown up in Kville, but I’ll take it.

      GO CATS!!!

Love it! It takes steps to build a program. This year has been a leap!

So, we have to play PSU once every 20 years in a bowl it seems.

My apologies, but I’m kinda new to this new type of fandom. When are we supposed to start saying we should decline this bowl because we Aren’t good enough to deserve to play in it?

  15. huffdaddy526

Got our flight booked. Any advice on tickets? Ticketmaster? Stubhub? Scalp them?

    1. sp

Will we be able to find out which side of the stadium or sections will be for UK fans. I’d rather not end up in the Penn St sections

    2. CatsfaninFL

Ticketmaster shows the SEC and Big 10 sides of the stadium.

Pros- should be a good match up. Proud if this team and what they have accomplished. Cons- I still think this team got the shaft. We finished second in the East not Florida and we beat Florida in the swamp in all three phases of the game and manhandled them at the line of scrimmage. Florida didn’t deserve the peach bowl we did.
