If the first game were tomorrow, Jalen Whitlow would be your starter

It’s going to be a battle for the 2014 starting quarterback position with 2013 starter Jalen Whitlow trying to keep his spot from returners Max Smith, Reese Phillips, and Patrick Towles, as well as newcomer Drew Barker. All of the guys (minus Smith; he’s out right now) are making their case for the job, but it’s still Whitlow’s to lose as of now.

“If we had to play tomorrow, Jalen would be the guy,” Stoops told KSR.

While they’ve all shown potential through six practices, Stoops still needs to see more. “They all show flashes,” he said. “But no one is as consistent as they need to be.”

“We need someone to step up and make the decision easy,” he added.

Stoops said Whitlow has improved from last year, but Patrick Towles is the most improved from a season ago. As for Drew Barker, Stoops said the biggest compliment you can give the freshman right now is that he is executing well early in the process.

“He looks comfortable out there. He still misses some guys and makes bad decision, but that’s expected. He should be in high school right now.”

Towles gets start…you heard it here first fellas.

  2. Sin The'

If Whitlow is the starter next year we are screwed again.

    1. KS

Agreed. If he wants a running QB, lineup and run the wishbone. Jalen Whitlow is a great athlete. He is no QB. I for one want to see Towles or Phillips get the nod this year, move Whitlow to a Randle Cobb type role, redshirt Barker, and make Max Smith a grad assistant/player assistant.

    2. schwing

he is awful. he is flat, flat awful.

    3. jaws2

Unless Whitlow improves dramatically, we’re doomed this year, again. The guy could not throw the football accurately.

    4. Jayone

You are right on the money. It does no good to recruit quality wide receivers if the QB can’t throw it in the ocean. May as well run a veer or wish bone and forget it is 2014

    5. C....A.....T.....S.....CATS

      Yes. and….

WHEN YOU KEEP DOING THE SAME THING…. AND EXPECT DIFFERENT RESULS…

      IT’S CALLED INSANITY!

Let’s go Jalen! Football will be fun in Kentucky!!

    GO BIG BLUE!

  4. mike

I feel like we are doing Whitlow a disservice by not moving him to receiver or some other position. He will never be good enough to make it in the NFL as a QB, but he is athletic enough to make it if he were to play a different position.

We are screwed if Jalen is the best we have at QB.

  7. Sin The'

I have nothing against Whitlow but he is not an air raid type QB. I think he needs to be somewhere in the rotation but not the starting QB. I think Stoops knows this and that is why he answered the way he did. I don’t think he is the starter come fall.

    1. jaws2

Unless Whitlow improves dramatically, we’re doomed this year, again.. The guy could not throw the football accurately.

  8. asdf

Towles will eventually win the job. Agree with #1.

  9. Brad

I think Whitlow may be a good practice quarterback, but when a real game starts he takes a step back in his confidence and decision making. Hopefully others will step up and this becomes a win / win with Whitlow moving into the “Cobb” slot receiver spot with some plays designed for him in the wildcat to run or throw as well.

  13. Drew Carey Sucks

Hey jaws2… let us know your opinion!

Oh wait you did. So unless Witlow improves dramatically, we’re doomed this year again. Oh… he couldn’t throw at all accurately. Good analysis!

  14. Blue boy

If Towles sees the field our season will be in trouble and daddy gave a major contribution to UK. Have seen practice Towles still should be on the line not behind it.

    1. Carmine

LOL what are u talking about ? Ive heard he looked the best outside of hearing Stoops today!!

  15. Willis talkin bout..

isn’t football season several MONTHS away? He said “if we had to play today” This debate is pointless… save all the bashing of Whitlow and the others till lets say… I don’t know.. maybe the START of FOOTBALL season.

    1. jaws2

Unless Whitlow improves dramatically, we’re doomed this year, again. The guy could not throw the football accurately.

    2. Carmine

Fans dont want to hear that Whitlow would start in any situation !! Hes just not a QB !! What scares me is he clearly impresses these Coaches in practices.. He cant throw the ball in a game!!

  16. Dan

Whitlow cant throw th football, stopped watching and followng this team last year because of him, will do the same thi year if he’s the Q.B ! I WILL NOT watch and follow this team with Whitlow at QB ! If I wanted to see a dam running back ply QB I would watch old tapes of Nebraska or Alabama back 50 years go !
Play Barker, let him get some experience this year, even if hes not great,so what,he’s getting experience and learning his recievers, getting the timing down, etc,,, But,WIL NOT follow, watchbuy,ANYTHING related to this team with Whitlow at QB !

    1. jaws2

Unless Whitlow improves dramatically, we’re doomed this year, again. The guy could not throw the football accurately.

    2. Carmine

I agree if whitlow is the QB our offense will be pitiful like last year!! Also why would Stoops even say that? Tell the fans a meaningless” if the season started tomorrow( which it does not)” Why say that ? I believe its the choice that the fans will hate the most!! Its like creating anti-buz for the season..

    3. David

I would not put Barker in at quarterback until I knew that the offensive line can protect him. We sure do not need him to end up hurt like Maxwell Smith. I agree Whitlow would be better served at receiver for his sake of making it to the pro’s and the teams sake for putting up some wins.

  17. Jim

I was not happy with the production from the QB position, last season. If Whitlow wins the the starting job for this season, I hope that it is because he got a whole lot better and not because the freshman gun slinger just wasn’t as good as advertised.

Regardless if who starts, the team needs a significant leap in production at that position.

  18. kingrex

Please let the Whitlow experiment is over. Please.

  19. LaughOutLoud

Jaws2 keep up the hustle. I find it hilarious

  20. 2mites

All you fools who cheer on Whitlow must have never seen a game he played in. He is no game player and as bad a passer I ever seen. The Cats are doomed for sure with him under QB.

  21. DH

I bet half of you miserable people were the same ones saying Calipari was a horrible coach and our basketball team sucked. It’s April 10th, people. 6 practices in. And he said “If we had to play tomorrow, Jalen would be the guy,” We don’t play tomorrow. It was just a hypothetical. Our internet fan base apparently licks the windows on the back of the short bus

    1. roger

I agree 100% wit the “if” statement. However, that works both ways. The fans are saying “if” Whitlow is the starter we are doomed. See how that works? the coach stated an “if” and the fans responded with an “if”.

I will always be a fan, but “if” Can’t Throw Whitlow, is the starter, then I don’t like our chances to be good. “If” he starts, I hope he proves me wrong.

  22. RandyB

If Whitlow is the QB again this Fall, Brown and Stoops lose credibility, the AIR RAID offense that was promised will be a joke, and game attendance will not get better. All that will set the Program on a downward slope, and recruiting will suffer. They need to start Barker or Towles to get Kentucky fans in the stands.

  23. C3K

I just hope we find the right guy for the job by August. The constant switching of starters hurt us last year.

  24. YouMadBro?

    Jaws2 is Drew Barker.

    1. or

      Brew Darker?

  25. joslow

Answer this question if Whitlow is not a QB why can’t the others beat him out? It’s a B L A C K thang

  26. Glenn Fohr

You have got to be kidding me!!!!!!!!

  27. Blue an right

Sick of this QB stuff. Stoops knows Towles is leaving. Throwing hm a bone. Stoops says everything great about Barker until he arrive, now he is a freshman. Phillips was getting all the praise early, now Towles gets an he’s improving. That hooks up Towles for this season. Really a shame.

Ask how they are doing at practice. Attend practice. This is all smoke and mirrors by this coaching staff.

    1. Hamhock

bingo. Also, I think Stoops just wanted to have something to say to the media so they would shut up about it. Can you imagine a life where every conversation begins, “hi coach – do we have a QB yet?”?

  28. Dekoda

First off Maxwell Smith injured is better then Withlow. Thought we was going to see a air raid like we used to woth couch there?? Withlow sucks he started last year look what happened. Smith okayed better. Barker orTowles should start easly soooo we can passdd. Thats what a Air Raid is. Its passing.

  29. Crushed

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Jayone

OK I get it. I will not get my hopes up for an SEC quality quarterback. So redshirt Drew Barker and don’t start yelling for him to play after the third game. If we can’t do any better than Jalen Whitlow let’s hope the O line is brutal and our running backs quick. We will need to run the ball 95% of the time because Whitlow couldn’t and never will be able to hit the broad side of a barn

  31. MustangCat

We need someone on here “cleaning up” the comments section, before posting them. Get rid of the trolls, get rid of the moronic comments.
On to football. Process of elimination here guys. My vote is that Reese starts out at QB by spring game. The OL should be vastly improved, much bigger and stronger, more experienced. Much more quality depth there. We will have some mountains on the OL, so the running game should improve. We should have tremendous improvement in the talent level at RB as well. SEC caliber guys carrying the pig, and several of them. THAT will help the passing game as much as better QB play. Make the defense play us honest. Our receiving corps should be light years better this year! We should have SEC caliber players 2 deep at every position there! I think the offense takes a good leap.
Defense, we should be better everywhere but LB. The middle of the field will be the only question mark?! Our DL should be one of the better in the SEC, and should be able to get some heat on the QB’s. That will improve the secondary. And the secondary should make a leap, compared to last year. The linebackers are the mystery?! I can see a couple of known factors there should be at least OK. We need a couple of guys to “emerge”.
What i think will make the most difference, is the schedule this year.
We have 3-4 100% should be sure wins, and 3-4 50-50% wins. We can win 5-6 games, if our coaching comes through! If we can pull off an upset or two?! 7-8 wins are not ridiculous. I personally think that we will play UL to finish the season – with 5 wins. If we have something to play for, seriously?
I also see more then 5 incoming freshmen playing significant roles this year. I think we will see 10 minimum, and probably 12-15 that will be in rotations and see the field a lot.

  32. joslow

Jalen has a higher completion% than Max. Just full of it

  33. yoga

    Meet the new boss – same as the old boss!!!! . . . . . . . . .

  34. Walterwhitlow

Mustangcat makes a lot of sense except for Jalen not starting. Yes I’m Jalens dad but put yourself in his shoes. New coaches mostly freshman players, totally new offense, Jalen with injured shoulders both throwing and non throwing. Now with this yr under his belt and healthy with this team being more mature, this will be a great yr. Jalen is intelligent with a rocket arm and sprinters speed with less reps at QB than anybody at this level. He will succeed

    1. Cayuts

      +1

Even though a lot of people are trolling this comments section, bashing Jalen, most of the BBN will stand behind him and support him anyway. He’s athletic enough to play pretty much any offensive position. He’s a smart football player who has experience. I agree with you, he will succeed. And it’s early in the year. We’re only a couple practices in and none of these internet trolls have seen practice for themselves yet. Go Cats, Go Jalen, Go Walter.

  35. Burly

I am 100% behind Jalen as starter…most people on this site wouldn’t know a football player if they seen one. He played behind a crap line experienced receivers and high school running backs. Just watch him explode this year and all of you will be sniffing his jock. Aaron Rogers wouldn’t have played well for UK last year.

  36. David

Put Hatcher in at middle linebacker. The kid can play there and we need him to fill the hole. Next year he can go back and play defensive end.

    1. WOW

      LOL

  37. area 51

The only reason to play whitlow (at QB) is we go 0-Sec again and we get a higher draft position. And please don’t burn the redshirt yr of Baker. Towles, Smith or Phillips should be the QB. Whitlow should be used n the “Cobb Set”. Come on Stoops, give us a chance to win an sec game this yr.

  38. Blue boy

Relax you guys need to realize he said if the game was tomorrow Whitlow would be the guy. Barker is his guy and has only been to 6 practices and those rhat think Towles is transferring I wish the kid would hurry up. The kid is burning up a scholarship that football player could use.

  39. tippy toe

Losing confidence in this staff to evaluate talent.

  40. Tej

Amazing that all the people who have not seen one practice know who should be the starting qb. These are people who think they have more knowledge about who looks best in drills than the coaches who see these kids daily. Apparently, they also believe Jalen Whitlow could not improve his skill level from last season. Stoops said he would be the starter “today”. There’s a long way yo go until the first game. But, if the coaches think he gives us the best chance to win in the Fall, I go with their opinion not that of a bunch of uninformed critics.

  41. Call Me Crazy

I think I’ll just leave the coaching to the coaches. You know . . . since it’s their JOB and they are far, far more qualified to make the decision than I am.

    Go Big Blue!
