Avery Williamson invited to NFL Combine

Former Kentucky linebacker Avery Williamson is the only Wildcat to receive an invite to the 2014 NFL combine this spring. projects Williamson to go in the final round at best, rating him as the 14th best inside linebacker, but he’ll have plenty of opportunities to improve his stock between now and May 8, the first day of the draft.

Williamson ranked fifth in the SEC in 2013 with 8.5 tackles per game. He recorded 102 total tackles to lead UK on the year with one sack and two fumbles recovered. A captain in all 12 games his senior season, Williamson was four tackles shy of 300 for his career.

Hope he does well and impresses and gets drafted. Always love having Wildcats in the NFL.

How on earth is someone as obviously talented as Avery projected as a last round pick????? He was 5th in the SEC in tackles last season and 2nd the season before that! Has the recent success of former Wildcats in the NFL taught people nothing?

  3. Makes No Sense

Wesley Woodyard led the SEC in tackles (and I think did so for 2 years) and went undrafted.

And Woodyard is now captain on the Broncos defense…. Everyone said Trevathan was too small, and he led the Broncos in tackles this season. Warford was drafted too low and just had a spectacular rookie season. Some lucky NFL team will get a great bargain in Williamson; he’ll get drafted way too low and turn out to be a great player.

Yeah, it is very likely some NFL team is going to pick him up for a steal. By the way, the draft pick the Broncos used to get Trevathan was one of those that they got from the jets for Teabow, I find that so funny.

Hope he goes undrafted then signs with the broncos

And this is why we have the problems we have in UK Football….only ONE player is going to the NFL this year. No knocks on UK, no crowing about “They supposed to be SEC”. But this is just makes the point about the failure of our previous recruiting efforts & the hole UK fids itself in. I will say, bitterly, “Thank you Coach Phillips.”

At least the current coaching staff seem unfrightened to attempt to recruit anyone. The previous staff seemed to operate like me in High School, “You don’t want to go out with me, do you?” And yeah, phrased like that the answer is generally, “No.”

  6. NFL Cats in the next 5 years:

Thats a big difference….there are about 20 guys on our roster now that I think have good chances of being drafted:

    Bud Dupree
    Big Z
    JoJo Kemp
    Kyle Meadows
    Marcus McWilson
    Regie Meant
    Dorian Baker
    Mike Edwards
    Mikel Horton
    Cory Johnson
    Kendall Randolph
    Darius West
    Matt Elam
    Boom Williams
    Ryan Flannigan
    Dorian Hendrix
    Josh Krok
    AJ Stamps
    Denzel Ware

All of those guys are NFL roster type of talent….it will all be on how they develop and this staff proved at FSU they can develop players (Bjoern Werner, 2-star recruit to 1st round draft pick)… Stoops and Elliot have a track record of getting guys to the NFL

      Barker? Timmons? Snodgrass? Blue?

Williamson is just the latest guy coming out of UK that will be underrated because of the school he plays for.

Winston Guy despite having a throwaway season as a seahawk last year actually started to produce midway through this season with the Jaguars.

I won’t be surprised to see Rumph make a roster either. He played better than Lumpkin, yet Lumpkin manages to stick around.

A good combine would certainly help him though, combine boosted Stevie Johnson’s stock by quite a bit.

Just curious: why didn’t he stay and improve his draft position?

    1. AnthonyBBN

Because he was a senior and graduated.

On one hand, it’s really frustrating to see him projected to go so late, if at all. On the other hand, things seem to be going pretty well these days for underrated UK football prospects in the NFL, so if recent history is any indication, all he needs is a shot. Hope he gets it.

Quick dose of reality concerning all the recruiting hoopla:

Avery Williamson was a 3 star out of high school.

Wesley Woodyard was a 3 star out of high school.

Danny Treviathan was a 2 star out of high school.
