Tweet Beat Power Rankings: October

Tweet Beat Power Rankings: October

As part of the never-ending quest to bring you University of Kentucky news in the most ridiculous manner possible, I comb the Twitter-verse each week for the funniest, oddest, and sometimes, nearly illegible tweets from your favorite players and personalities. Basically, I read Twitter so you don’t have to. Without further ado, here are the best tweets of the week.

Last month, we released the first Tweet Beat Power Rankings, in which I ranked each UK basketball player by how good they are on Twitter/Instagram/etc. What constitutes “good”? They can be funny, like Perry Stevenson; real like Patrick Patterson; or straight up legendary like Doron Lamb. In September, Tod Lanter came out on top, but freshman Marcus Lee was close behind. With another month of social media interaction under their belts, who will reign supreme this go around? Here are October’s Tweet Beat Power Rankings:

1. TOD LANTER

Followers: 5,112
Tweet frequency: Multiple times per day
Best recent tweet:

As usual, Tod had a lot to choose from, but I had to go with this tweet, especially after I looked up what Wallabees were:

4742_366_45

That is one weird outfit. But like all badasses, Lanter just says “Sweats stare? Don’t care.”

Best recent Instagram:

#TeamNoSleep call-outs continue, which is awesome because this team sleeps A LOT. Who will be this group’s RichyP?

Twitter style: Tod continues to kill it on Twitter. He’s probably the best “Seinfeld tweeter” on the team, with a good mix of relatable tweets, including “This weather is just screaming Netflix” this past weekend when it was gross outside, and questions for fans, such as “Anybody have a song suggestion for BBM friday? Im stumped.” However, the reason he stays on top of the Power Rankings is this Facebook status from earlier this week:

It’s Tod’s world and we’re just living in it.

Goof. Ball.

Twitter stock: Lee’s motivational tweets still amuse me (which is saying something, because I usually hate that stuff), and even when he was sick, he managed to put out a positive vibe. Lee is a fan favorite for his optimism and eagerness to interact with fans, but even he’s human, as shown by his lazy Papa Johns delivery tweet above. Ten bucks says that when the person delivered it, he gave them a big smile, and maybe even a small panda sticker.

Best recent tweet:

Willie is really accepting his role as the seasoned vet, isn’t he?

Best recent Instagram:

“What’s Gucci? Other than my scarf?”

Twitter stock: Willie’s personality shines through in everything he does, although I wish he’d tweet a little more often. We know he’s a huge “The Walking Dead” fan, so why not express that through social media? He could help educate fans on how best to prepare for a zombie apocalypse and potentially save lives. Maybe a zombie Halloween costume is in our future? We want more, Willie! Including more advice on women and relationships, because that’s always funny.

4. SAM MALONE

Tweet frequency: Once every few days
Best recent tweet:

(Don’t worry, he was joking.)

Best recent Instagram:

“This didn’t work out too well for me @nerlensnoel3 #tbt #dumbidea #tomorrow #madness”

Twitter stock: Thankfully, Malone has been a bit more active on Twitter and Instagram this month, posting more “Rich Kids of Instagram”-esque pics of himself and friends at places like “The Port Royal Club,” and more snaps of his time at UK, like this Throwback Thursday picture of him and Nerlens. Malone’s teammates claim he’s hilarious, and we got a taste of that in his Madness intro. Right now, he’s the Power Ranking’s most improved player.

5. JON HOOD

Best recent tweet:

Hood is referring to Lanter’s earlier tweet, “If it felt like this outside every day, @jonnylightning4 would have a different long-sleeved dry-fit for all 365 days.” This isn’t Nike Dri-Fit, Jon, but you’re welcome:

Best recent Instagram:

As someone who takes way too many Instagram pics of her dog, I gotta go with this one.

Twitter stock: There’s no denying it: Jon Hood is a country boy through and through, and there’s no better example than his Twitter feed. Another favorite tweet this month was Hood saying that he needs to go visit DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson in Sacramento after this season. Now THAT is a sitcom I would watch.

Tweet Beat: September Power Rankings

Tweet Beat: September Power Rankings

As part of the never-ending quest to bring you University of Kentucky news in the most ridiculous manner possible, I comb the Twitter-verse each week for the funniest, oddest, and sometimes, nearly illegible tweets from your favorite players and personalities. Basically, I read Twitter so you don’t have to. Without further ado, here are the best tweets of the week.

We’re going to try something a little different on Tweet Beat this week. We’ve got a new crop of Cats, and what better way to get to know them than through social media? Each month, I’ll rank each of the basketball players by how good they are on Twitter/Instagram/etc. What constitutes “good”? They can be funny, like Perry Stevenson; real like Patrick Patterson; or straight up legendary like Doron Lamb. Who knows, maybe it will inspire the guys to come out of their Twitter shells even more to interact with the Big Blue Nation. Therefore, I present the inaugural Tweet Beat Power Rankings:

lanter-tb

1. TOD LANTER
Twitter and Instagram handle: @tod_lanterIII; tod_lanteriii
Followers: 4,437
Tweet frequency: Multiple times per day
Best recent tweet:

I enjoy the “first world problems” here, as well as the pun that wasn’t intended (so of course it was intended).

Best recent Instagram:

A KSR photobomb is always going to get high marks from this gal.

Twitter style: Tod is a Tweet Beat favorite. Not only is he hilarious, he gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the team, including videos, photos, and inside jokes. Tod’s specialty is what I call “Seinfeld tweets,” or awesome commentary about everyday life, whether it be the weather (“It’s pumpkin patch and apple cider type weather”), food (“What crazy fattening ice cream concoction should I indulge in this evening?”), or really random song lyrics (“And I said what about Breakfast at Tiffany’s? She said ‘I think I remember the film & as I recall I think, we both kind of liked it’…”).

Best recent tweet:

It was hard to choose a best recent tweet for Marcus because he is so awesome on Twitter. He is probably the most positive person on social media, besides motivational speakers and Dr. Doron. Every day, he uploads an instagram photo with an inspiration saying like “Don’t tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon.” Seriously. Usually I just roll my eyes when I see stuff like that, but when it comes from a 17-year-old freak basketball athlete with an awesome haircut, it puts a little extra pep in my step. Also, get ready to see beanies:

Best recent Instagram:

More behind-the-scenes videos of the team goofing off, please.

Twitter style: Marcus is already a Tweet Beat star. He radiates positivity, with daily affirmations that make even this cynic smile. I sort of wish I could shrink him, put him in my pocket, and pull him out whenever I’m feeling blue. He’s that great, even if his coaches think he’s a little weird.

Is it just me, or is Willie dressing a little less hipstery these days? Where are the suspenders and bow tie? Also, I love Julius Randle, but that shirt is hideous.

Twitter style: Willie lacks a filter on Twitter, which is both good and bad. It’s good because he’ll share pretty much anything about himself (his desire to become the next “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”), but it’s also bad, because when he’s upset with the fans, he doesn’t hesitate to call them out on Twitter, as we learned several times last season. However, he’s getting better at that, adding the all-important “only about 5% of our fans” disclaimer to keep the pitchforks at bay. I love Willie’s Twitter style because it allows him to express his eccentricities (was it Archie that said “Willie’s kind of a different dude”?). Art, Miley Cyrus, TV shows, video games, fashion. You name it, Willie will give you his opinion on it.

Once a country boy, always a country boy.

Best recent Instagram:

Self-deprecating humor? Check.

Twitter style: You knew the guy who brought us #lakehairdontcare was going to be high on the list. As a 5th year senior, Hood has done it all at UK, and has kind of become the old man in the corner telling stories to the kiddos about hunting, volleyball games, fishing, and the good ole days when you could shoot off fireworks. But he’s informative, too. For instance, I always knows the Reds are playing because Jon Hood tweets about them. Reading Hood’s tweets really is like sitting with him on a pontoon boat drinking beer, which is pretty much the point of it all, right?

Tweet Beat: DeMarcus Cousins vs. Isaiah Thomas in the Battle of the Photoshops

Teammates DeMarcus Cousins and Isaiah Thomas have been locked in a bizarre Twitter war this summer, swapping good-natured barbs, most of the time with hilarious photoshops. Some of the latest examples:

I spent way too long trying to figure out if this picture was real:

Either way, I hope the Twitter war continues. It’s Tweet Beat gold, Jerry, gold!

Willie Cauley-Stein has never been afraid to share his thoughts with the Big Blue Nation. After UK’s loss to Western on Saturday, he attempted to calm down the masses:

Before you get too mad…

See? He’s learning.

Alex Poythress may have something to say for those of you calling him a sidekick:
