Aaron Torres Sports Podcast Ep. 69: Bahamas Recap

It’s episode 69 of the Aaron Torres Sports Podcast, as Aaron spends virtually the entire episode breaking down Kentucky’s trip to the Bahamas! While he discusses the chaos at Maryland and Ohio State at the end, it begins with the Wildcats in the Bahamas.

The emergence of Kentucky’s stars: Aaron spends the first few minutes of the show breaking down the play of Kentucky’s biggest stars, most notably Tyler Herro, PJ Washington and Keldon Johnson. Aaron explains why the most impressive stat from Herro wasn’t his team-leading 17 points per game, and why Washington is showing NBA scouts everything they need to see to make him a mid-round pick next year. Plus, Aaron gushes about Keldon Johnson and the energy and toughness he played with in the Bahamas.

Second-year players shine: Next Aaron takes a deep dive into UK’s two other sophomores, Nick Richards and Quade Green. He explains the way each has improved, and why Quade Green might be the most underappreciated player of the whole trip. Plus, why seeing players like Richards and Green put in the work isn’t just important for them, but the younger players on the roster as well.

Finally, a look at the scandals of Maryland and Ohio State: Aaron breaks down the two biggest scandals across college sports, Maryland and Ohio State. Aaron takes a deep dive at Maryland and explains why everyone is blaming the wrong person, and also a quick update on Ohio State. Will Zach Smith’s newest criminal allegations have any impact on Urban Meyer’s future at Ohio State?

The Aaron Torres Sports Podcast E68: Bahamas Recap + Corey Brewer

The Aaron Torres Sports Podcast E68: Bahamas Recap + Corey Brewer

It’s an action-packed episode of the Aaron Torres Sports Podcast, as Aaron is joined by NBA champion and two-time NCAA champion Corey Brewer joins the show. He and Aaron discuss his winding career, national championships at Florida and time with the Oklahoma City Thunder last season.
But before Corey, there’s actual basketball to talk, plus a little football, with topics including:
Kentucky’s trip to the Bahamas: The Wildcats have played two games, and Aaron is blown away by what he has seen so far. He explains why Tyler Herro is proving all his doubters wrong, and why Nick Richards has been the single biggest revelation of the trip. Aaron also explains why one freshman besides Herro has really impressed him – especially on the defensive end of the court.
The NCAA makes a bunch of rule changes: Aaron reacts to the big, sweeping changes in college basketball – that aren’t actually big or sweeping. He explains why rules like “players can now have agents” and “players can return to college if they go undrafted” aren’t exactly what they seem, and the one big rule that actually does matter.
Idiots questioning Alabama football’s schedule: Finally, Aaron goes in on all the haters who say Alabama plays a “soft” schedule because they don’t play road games. Aaron gives some facts to explain why that’s the dumbest narrative in all of sports.
Next, Aaron welcomes on Corey Brewer – who played last season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, to discuss his NBA career and time at Florida. The guys break down the following:
His early days: Corey explains took a unique path to the NBA, after growing up on a tobacco farm and running a garbage route with his dad. He explains how that drove him to work hard at basketball and instilled a work ethic that he still has to this day.
His time at Florida: Corey goes in-depth on Florida’s back-to-back runs with the Gators. He explains what allowed he and his teammates to click, and what went into their decision to return to school even after winning a title – the answer will surprise you. Also, what was it like to play against “peak Greg Oden” and were the 2007 Gators the last great team in college basketball?
Playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder: Finally, the pair discuss Brewer’s 2018 season with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He explains why Russell Westbrook was one of the best teammates he’s ever had, and why he wasn’t surprised that Paul George returned to OKC this off-season. Also, does he ever see Billy Donovan returning to college basketball?

Aaron Torres Sports Podcast Ep. 67: Tim Brando discusses Urban Meyer + A Kentucky Bahamas Preview

The Aaron Torres Sports Podcast is back, as we break down the biggest story in sports – the ever-evolving circus surrounding Urban Meyer. Aaron is joined by Fox Sports’ Tim Brando to break down the whole mess. But first, Aaron welcomes on his buddy Nick Coffey to both discuss the Urban Meyer debacle and preview Kentucky’s trip to the Bahamas. Here are today’s show topics:

The latest on Urban Meyer: Nick and Aaron take a deep dive into the latest with the Urban Meyer at Ohio State. They update us on what we know now, and why the legal ramifications make this story less cut-and-dried than it seems. Can a technicality save Meyer? Plus, if Meyer did report Zach Smith to his superiors, can you really blame him for keeping Smith on staff?

A preview of the “Big Blue Bahamas” trip: Next up, the guys discuss what they’re most excited about with the Kentucky trip to the Bahamas this week. Aaron wants to see how Reid Travis performs in his first time wearing blue, while Nick wants to get to know some of the more unfamiliar names on the roster. Plus, going up against such good competition, the guys admit that Kentucky could lose, but explain why that would be OK.

Next up, Aaron welcomes FOX’s Tim Brando to the show. Brando is one of the iconic voices of college football, and takes a deep dive into the Meyer mess starting with:

Meyer’s future at Ohio State: Brando explains why he believes that Urban Meyer will survive at Ohio State. He also wonders whether the timing of Meyer’s statement means that AD Gene Smith could survive this scandal as well.

Why do these kind of scandals only happen in college football: Aaron wonders why – between Bobby Petrino, Hugh Freeze and Urban Meyer – these scandals only seem to happen in college football. Tim gives a surprising answer to the question.

Tim’s preseason predictions: Tim tells us who his sleeper teams are, why he had a surprise winner in the Big 10 even before the Urban Meyer mess, and why he believes it’s time to expand the playoff to eight teams!

Aaron Torres Sports Podcast Ep. 66: Urban Meyer fallout + DJ Jeffries’ dad

The Aaron Torres Sports Podcast is back, and there is no shortage of big news, with Aaron breaking down the biggest story in sports: The continuing saga surrounding Urban Meyer. Aaron talks about that, D.J. Jeffries’ dad’s surprise comments and proposed changes to college basketball. The conversation starts with…

Urban Meyer’s future at Ohio State: Aaron gives you the latest update on Urban Meyer. How much did he know about his assistant coach’s domestic violence incident, and why is Meyer’s wife  the key to the whole story. Is it possible that she knew about the incident, but that her husband didn’t? And could that ultimately be what saves Meyer’s job?

D.J. Jeffries dad: Next, Aaron dives into the bizarre comments by D.J. Jeffries dad on Tuesday. After Jeffries’ dad says that his son was upset Kentucky wasn’t at his AAU games, is it better for both parties to just go their separate ways?

Finally, changes to AAU basketball: Finally, Aaron explains the new changes that are coming to AAU basketball – and why they won’t do anything to change the sport the way the NCAA wants.
