The Aaron Torres Podcast E73: College Football Preview

Aaron Torres is back from vacation and with it, a new edition of the Aaron Torres Sports Podcast! He’s joined by his good buddy to discuss all the big storylines heading into Week 1 of the college football season. Before that though, the guys quickly hit on one basketball topic:
Darius Bazley and the G-League: Bazley is the kid who decided to skip college at Syracuse and play in the G-League – only instead, he’ll sit out this whole season instead. The guys explain why everyone in the media predicted this inevitable ending and why it never made sense for Bazley to play in the G-League. Also, Aaron explains why once again, college basketball comes out on top after a decision like this.
Week 1 of college football: Aaron asks Nick the vibe in Louisville, as the Cardinals embrace for an inevitable slaughtering at the hands of Alabama. Also, are a dominant Clemson and Alabama “bad” for college football, the way the Warriors are for the NBA? Aaron says no, and explains why.
Playoff picks: Finally, the guys make their playoff picks. They both explain why they love Washington and Aaron takes a deep dive on why this is FINALLY the year Michigan breaks through under Jim Harbaugh.

The Aaron Torres Sports Podcast Ep. 72: It’s “Best Of” Week Part Two

Aaron Torres is still on vacation, so it’s time to continue the “Best Of” series of the Aaron Torres Sports Podcast to close out the week. You got NBA players Enes Kanter, De’Aaron Fox, and Corey Brewer last episode, and now, it’s the head coach edition!

First up, Aaron welcomes the guest he’s waited a lifetime for: Nevada head coach Eric Musselman! Hop aboard the Muss Bus, as the coach of the Wolfpack discusses…

Where he was when Cody and Caleb Martin told him they’d return: Coach Muss takes listeners behind the scenes of where he was when he found out his two stars would return. What was his reaction and how did he celebrate?

How he will handle coaching a completely different team next season: Muss talks about the unique challenges facing his team. Last year they had no depth; now they legit go 12 or 13 deep. He explains why his background in the NBA makes him believe he’ll be able to keep everyone happy.

Story Time with Coach Muss: Coach Muss shares some incredible stories from his time coaching in the G-League, CBA and USBL. He talks about the time he had to insert a suspended player in the lineup, and the time his team found out at a McDonald’s that their game-time changed.

Next, Aaron welcomes on a big guest, as he is joined by LSU basketball coach Will Wade. Wade has the Tigers primed for a monster season in 2018-2019 and discussed with Aaron the following:

The Incredible Turnaround the Tigers had Last Season: Coach Wade explains what allowed the Tigers to go from a club that was picked to finish 14th in the SEC in the preseason, to one that surprised many on their way to an above .500 finish in the SEC. What allowed him to turn around the culture and have immediate success?

Wade’s Loaded Freshman Class: Wade breaks down a star-studded freshman class which is ranked as high as No. 3 in some recruiting services. What can fans expect from McDonald’s All-American Naz Reid? And is Emmitt Williams the most underrated player in the class? Also, how will the return of Tremont Waters help the young players?

The Strength of SEC Basketball: Finally, Coach Wade wraps up discussing the strength of the SEC. Does this league get the credit it deserves nationally? Also, what has he learned while watching John Calipari at Kentucky that Wade takes with him every day?

Finally, Aaron does a deep dive with the Hall of Famer, Jim Calhoun. The pair hit on a number of topics, including:

Calhoun’s New Job at a DIII School: Calhoun explains why he shockingly took the job at St. Joseph’s College, a Division III school in Aaron’s hometown of West Hartford, Connecticut. Calhoun also explains the differences between building a program at the DIII vs. DI level, and how coaching at a former all-girls college helps recruiting.

The Rise of UConn Basketball: Calhoun takes listeners behind the scenes of how he built UConn basketball from a program with no resources and facilities into a Big East power. What was it like walking into a league where six coaches became future Hall of Famers? And when did he know he had the program on the right track?

Calhoun Discusses his Best Players and Teams: Finally, Calhoun wraps up by talking about the best players and teams from his time in Storrs. Why the 2004 team – featuring Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor – was his most talented, but not necessarily the “best.” And why he readily admits we’ll never see anything like what Kemba Walker pulled off in 2011.

And finally, his time with the Knicks: Finally, Enes wraps up by talking about his time with the Knicks. He explains why he is excited to play with Kevin Knox, and what fans can expect from a young team next season.

Next, Aaron welcomes Kings’ rookie De’Aaron Fox live from All-Star weekend in Los Angeles:

The pair discusses De’Aaron’s rookie year in the NBA. What has been the biggest adjustment? And why does he believe it’s actually been easier than he expected?

What does Fox miss most about UK? How did playing for John Calipari prepare him for the NBA? And what would he say to high school recruits who are thinking about coming to Kentucky?

Fox then admits that Kentucky should have won the national championship when he was there two seasons ago.

Finally, Aaron welcomes on Corey Brewer – who played last season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, to discuss his NBA career and time at Florida. The guys break down the following:

His early days: Corey explains took a unique path to the NBA, after growing up on a tobacco farm and running a garbage route with his dad. He explains how that drove him to work hard at basketball and instilled a work ethic that he still has to this day.

His time at Florida: Corey goes in-depth on Florida’s back-to-back runs with the Gators. He explains what allowed he and his teammates to click, and what went into their decision to return to school even after winning a title – the answer will surprise you. Also, what was it like to play against “peak Greg Oden” and were the 2007 Gators the last great team in college basketball?

Playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder: Finally, the pair discuss Brewer’s 2018 season with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He explains why Russell Westbrook was one of the best teammates he’s ever had, and why he wasn’t surprised that Paul George returned to OKC this off-season.
