Wichita State’s got one heck of a chip on their shoulder

Rashard Kelly

If you thought Wichita State would come into this game with a chip on their shoulder, well, you were right. Junior forward Rashard Kelly came to the podium full of jokes this afternoon, starting with Kentucky’s “Nike Elite” status.

“They’re elite. You’ve got the top recruits coming to Kentucky. You’ve got the Nike Elite gear. They get all the Nike gear. They’re elite in everything. We are trying to be elite one day too, Nike.”

Ironically, when Gregg Marshall took the podium, he was wearing a Nike Elite t-shirt, which drew some chuckles from the media. When asked about it, Marshall joked that his team only has so many Nike Elite items and as head coach, he gets first pick.

“Yeah, we have some Nike Elite stuff, and I have to take the big stage in order to wear that. We’re excited about [the chip on our shoulder]. Our guys are not your five-star recruits walking in.”

As Marshall and his team reminded the media several times today, Wichita State doesn’t have any five-stars on its roster, and therefore none of the players ever drew interest from Calipari. When asked why Kentucky didn’t go after him, Kelly had more jokes.

“Probably because I’m not 6’11”, don’t have a 7’2″ wingspan, but it’s all good,” he said.

In turn, Kelly said he focuses on the little things, which teams like Kentucky often forget (his words, not mine).

“You just got to do the little things. Sometimes teams like that don’t focus on boxing out, checking down, defensive pressure, just little things that make us great. And I think that’s what makes us appreciate playing and working so hard more because we do little things that end up being a big reason why we win.”

I hate how much I like this Kelly kid. Wichita State ain’t scared.

And yet for some reason everyone who writes for this site and most of the people who comment on it are scared of Wichita State. It’s embarrassing.

Yeah, well we got a championship to win, and they are next on the chopping block. Beating up on the teams in the Truck Stop League doesn’t make you a championship caliber team. They have no one who can stop Bam, Monk and Fox. The only ones who can stop those three are the refs, Bam, Fox and Monk.

Well I guess we’re going to find out tom what they will play like when trash talking is involved. They need to get mad or something bc last night wasn’t great

We ( probably ) won’t lose if Monk goes for 20+ every game

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

That’s fine. Keep putting a mic in their face. Ask them if they ever heard of Daxter Miles and W.Va from a couple of years ago. They spouted off too. I think it was 78-39. Talk all you want after you’ve done something. I like our chances. A W if Malik is “average”. Pick your # if he relaxes and just plays. And lets make sure we all wear the Nike Elite stuff to the post game presser.

Of course they aren’t scared – no division 1 athlete worth his salt is scared of his opponent. However, I do like the locker room material they are giving us. After last night, I thought the Cats needed a little extra motivation, and this should do the trick. If our boys don’t come out playing ultra aggressive tomorrow I will be extremely disappointed.

There is a fine line between confident and cocky. They are definitely tiptoeing. They can have a chip on their shoulders but it doesnt sound like they are giving enough respect to UK and what they are capable of doing. UK isnt talking trash they are business. When emotions get involved teams lose.

Maybe he’s focused on “the little things” because he has a little thing…

Feel certain Wichita State would recruit five stars if they were inclined to go there and Gregg Marshall would not tell a five star that he does not want him.

They’re scared. That’s why their talking.

If the snide remarks by the Shockers and their coach don’t light a fire under our guys, then they don’t deserve to win tomorrow. This is the time of year where you lay it all on the line. We’re gonna see what our team is made of.
