Good morning, everyone. I bet you didn’t expect to wake up to a picture of Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson in Green Bay Christmas sweater vests, but here we are. Watch out Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, this has “Step Brothers 2” written all over it.
Let’s get to the news of the day, starting with some big developments in football recruiting…
1. UK got two huge football commitments yesterday
How big was that win over Louisville? Kentucky’s gotten FIVE commitments since then, including two huge ones yesterday from 4-star defensive end Joshua Paschal and top JuCo safety Lonnie Johnson. Johnson will provide immediate help in the secondary, while Paschal could be one of the biggest gets of the Mark Stoops era. Considered the 11th best strong side defensive end in the country, Paschal is the younger brother of former Cat (and current graduate assistant) TreVaughn Paschal and didn’t even have Kentucky in his top seven this summer. Not only is Kentucky getting a great player, Vince Marrow is making more inroads in the talent-laden DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area where Paschal goes to school.
2. UK’s 2017 class is now in the Top 25 nationally
The addition of Paschal and Johnson boosted Kentucky to #22 in Rivals’ 2017 team recruiting rankings, 26 in 247 Sports Composite’s.
With 19 recruits, here’s where the class stands right now:

3. Meanwhile, Brian Cole committed to Mississippi State
Once Kentucky added Johnson, one of the top safeties in the JuCo ranks, it wasn’t surprising that fellow JuCo safety Brian Cole went elsewhere. Cole, a former Michigan Wolverine turned East Mississippi Community College Pirate, committed to Mississippi State last night. That should make Brittany Wagner very happy.
Today’s signing day for junior college prospects, so stay tuned for any last minute surprises.
4. The spring game is moving to Friday night
Yesterday, UK announced the annual spring game will take place on Friday, April 14 under the lights at Commonwealth Stadium. If you can’t make it in person, the game will air live on the SEC Network.
5. Finals end today for the basketball team
That means Camp Cal begins. In the past week, John Calipari has sounded absolutely giddy about the notion of 29 straight days of four-a-days. (!)
“Bar the door, right there, let’s go. I said, you got to eat, sleep, video games, I’ll give you a little time for your video games, and then we’re playing basketball.”
6. Calipari himself is prepping for North Carolina
Cal was in his office last night watching tape to get ready for Saturday’s showdown with North Carolina in Vegas. For those of you worried he was spending too much time on the road promoting his book, it looks like Palmer’s making sure he’s not going anywhere.
7. If you haven’t yet, check out Calipari’s podcast
I don’t know what’s better: Calipari talking to guests like Charles Barkley or Calipari reading Blue Apron and Papa John’s ads. I had high hopes for Cal’s podcast and he exceeded them with the first episode. Do yourself a favor and listen on iTunes here. It’s also available on SoundCloud, Google Play and Stitcher.
Speaking of podcasts…
8. Special Vegas edition of The OTT Podcast drops today
Last night, I taped a podcast with my husband, Matt, and Fake Barney about our trip to Vegas, which starts tomorrow and has me crazy distracted today. The episode will be uploaded on the KSR feed on iTunes tonight, so tune in to hear our favorite Vegas stories (that we can tell), the things we’re most looking forward to, our picks for the top Vegas attractions, games, etc, and my passionate defense of the penny slots. If you’re also going to Vegas, it’s the perfect way to get pumped for the trip, and if you’re not, hopefully it’s entertaining nonetheless.
9. RIP Alan Thicke
If you listen to the podcast, it kind of ends on a sad note when the news broke that Alan Thicke died at the age of 69. Thicke was most famous to my generation as the dad from “Growing Pains,” and was a staple on network TV for several decades. I just watched an episode of “Fuller House” season two (which is horrible by the way, I don’t know why I keep watching) that featured Thicke, so the news is a shock and very sad. He’s also Robin Thicke’s dad, so thoughts out to their family. Thicke also wrote the theme song to several TV shows, including “Diff’rent Strokes” and “The Facts of Life,” so he was a man of many talents.
And now I can’t get the theme song from “The Facts of Life” out of my head…
10. KSR is live from Roswell
Last night, the guys rolled in to Roswell, New Mexico on their supernatural tour of the United States. Today’s show will be live
from the alien museum in Roswell, so tune in an hour from now for conspiracy theories and Matt debunking them.
Just kidding, the show will be live from the Fairfield Inn (1201 N Main St), so if you’re in the area, come on out and say hello.
