UK vs. Duke in Champions Classic will open 2018-19 season

In the wake of the NCAA’s decision to move the start date of the 2018-19 college basketball season up three days, ESPN just announced the Champions Classic will open the season on Tuesday, November 6. This year’s event will feature Duke vs. Kentucky and Kansas vs. Michigan State at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

“We feel that there is natural connection to the start of the season and to the State Farm Champions Classic,” said Clint Overby, vice president of ESPN Events. “These four schools have come together to help build an exciting stage to launch the college basketball season.”

The will be the eighth year for the Champions Classic. Kentucky and Duke lead the way with 4-3 records, while Kansas and Michigan State are 3-4 in the series. As always, John Calipari joked that playing such a marquee opponent so early on is unfair to his young squads, although next year’s group will feature many more veterans than usual.

“The Champions Classic has been the gold standard for college basketball’s regular-season events for the last seven years, but I love what we’re doing to use it to tip off the basketball season. What better thing for our sport than to begin the year with four of the most successful programs in college basketball. Now, it might not be the best thing for my team, but the good news is we’ll all be learning about our teams at the same time while taking this thing to the next level. I know our fans will turn Indianapolis blue next fall.”

Yes, we will.

Ole Seth Greenberg would rather have Purdue, Virginia, Villinova and Harvard playing in this .

I’m glad our summer trip aligns with this so we’ll have extra time to get our team on the same page. Should be shades of our 38-1 team with all the guys we’ll return.

Better pray we get Zion, or we are going to get our asses whipped in that opener.

How do you figure that? All dUKe’s players will go pro, we will have more returning than normal. I like my team’s chances.

    2. DelrayCat

Agreed. Duke will have at least 4 of 5 starters gone, plus Coach K is only playing 8 guys this year. They have a VERY thin bench. But that means he will load up again next year….ugh.

    3. 4everUKblue

True but for once we should be the more experienced team and they’re losing Senior Trip Allen.

Both teams will be good, maybe 1 vs 2. Duke has the #1 and #3 players, along with another top 10 guy. The Cats should have some returners with experience, should be a good one.

We’re gonna get an extra 4-6 games plus a bunch of practices when we do the summer trip before the season. Even if we add no new recruits, we still will have a very solid team with a lot of returning players. Duke brings in some top recruits, but they will lose more this year.

Truman this is UK, we don’t get our asses handed to us, sure we have off nights but usually when the lights are the brightest our teams shine the greatest!! But I trust you’ll be crying with all the other dukies after they get their asses handed to them.

I heard Greenberg wants to make it a rule only teams that have 3 or more seniors in the lineup can play in this
