UK Basketball Scrimmage Notes By John Calipari

“Tell DeWayne Peevy I want the 9th banner to hang over on that wall”

Earlier today the Kentucky basketball team held an intrasquad scrimmage as they begin their preparations for the upcoming season. Although no media was present, there was no problem as The Grand Poobah himself, John Calipari gave the fans a few nuggets of info out of the Joe Craft Center regarding his team.

Okay Coach, I’m intrigued. Tell me more.

That’s very good news Coach. 7>5 every day of the week, and twice on Sundays. Any guesses as to who those 7 starters might be? I’ll take a guess and say the Harrisons, Poythress, Randle, Cauley-Stein, James Young, and Dakari.

I’m not really sure how Coach Cal plans on playing a “small” lineup with his top 3 guards standing at 6-5, 6-5, and 6-7, but at least we know the team is versatile. One of the most important facets of UK’s defense the last few years has been the ability of bigger players to hold their own guarding smaller players out on the perimeter off screens, which we saw a lot of from Nerlens and Willie Cauley-Stein last year.

With each opportunity John Calipari continues to sound more and more pleased with the talented group of youngsters he has in Lexington this season, very similar to the preseason before the 2011-12 season, when the school’s 8th national championship came back with the team from New Orleans.

Just a heads up, the twins are now listed as 6’6.

    That’s funny. I get it.

Don’t you suspect that among those pushing the 7 include Polson and Hawkins? His permutations are the most he’s ever had!

Best of the best – Cal has all the pieces, just a matter of putting them together. Our competition will be what decides the minutes and pt. Whatever the opp lineup, Cal will have an answer!

I take it as the smaller line up is Harrison twins young poythress n randle

I completely understand and love the approach Cal has to utilize taller guards to defend. I’m short so it looks like a nightmare to have the likes of Liggins and MKG guard someone of my stature. But Russ Smith’s quickness can make some of that fastest guards look a step behind. I believe Kentucky beats Louisville strickly because of our talent this year but I foresee Smith giving a clinic to the Harrisons/Young. The only promise I am able to hold to myself is EB’s comments on the Twins being legit competitors. If you can keep up with Bledsoe, then hands down. Opinions?

Sounds like Hawkins may work his way into rotation. He’s able to guard quick guards. That’s the only weakness I’ve seen with the twins. Saw it first hand when they tried to guard Hawkins in high school and then saw it at the Nike event.
