Can we talk about this quote about Tyler Herro’s defense?

Lost in the UK Basketball Media Day content avalanche is a quote from Coach Cal that, honestly, I had completely forgotten about until just now.

In speaking about his team’s defense, Calipari said Tyler Herro has been better expected, maybe even better than Keldon Johnson:

“Tyler is better than I thought defensively. I thought Keldon would be better than Tyler defensively. I’m not sure of that.”

Wait, what?

The assumption early on (and up until this big development) was that Herro’s defense is his weakness, while Johnson is the team’s lockdown defender on the wing. Johnson earned that reputation throughout his high school career and then on the big stage stage for his defense on Duke’s RJ Barrett in the final minutes of the McDonald’s All-American Game. Herro’s defense had always been considered a liability, even as recent as in the Bahamas, when he was doing everything else.

But now Cal is saying Herro might be better defensively? If that’s the case, my goodness. We already know how good he is offensively, but worried his defense may keep him on the bench in certain matchups. If he’s doing both, he’ll play as much as he wants.

It was a pretty shocking update out of the team’s recent practices. Now, do we believe it? Or was it Cal lighting a fire under Johnson to be even better?

I believe it. Herro is the real deal.

  2. Wade

He one of those guys that’s stronger and more athletic than you think and puts himself in the right spots. He’s in shape in body and mind. Hes a for real player. He’s proactive instead of reactive.

    1. Alex90

Those guys are usually white..you never expect much from them other than shooting.

    2. TheAssman

      Alex90, that’s racist

    3. Wade

he’s very confident and not differing to anyone. He’s an alpha

    4. Blue Jesus

      You would know, Kramer

  3. CombatMedic_98

You mean he is better than Keldon…wow!!! I thought that too based on the Bahama Games!

HaHa! No way I believe it. Cal is most definitely motivating Tyler’s roommate Keldon to get even better. I love Tyler, but no way is he better than Johnson on D.

    2. jimmer

Jp4uk: Agree with this ^^^^. Cal already playing motivation mind games with KJ.

    3. CombatMedic_98

Nooo. I think stats proved otherwise and watching them both…KJ is not the better player overall. He may slam better but that’s fan stuff!

For once i can agree with the combat medic 😉 i really thought Herro’s energy on the defensive end of the court was infectious and effective in disrupting the other team. But honestly, let’s not put TOO much stock in the Bahamas games, please.

      Thanks ?

My sources say that Cal was both confused and jet lagged when he provide this quote…

    Good

Herro has all of the necessary tangible to be the best player in college basketball this year. Cats embarrass Duke by 20+… Herro scores 18 hitting 4 out of 7 from the 3. Kentucky has too many weapons for Duke’s limited defense. Herro will be allowed to pick his spots all game long and will sprinkle in some midrange shots (and hopefully a dunk) for good measure.

    1. UKfanman01

Also Duke has 0 bench players. Well they do have that monster Bolden (the guy I said UK didnt want in the first place)

  6. KatsKlaws

I hope it’s true the BBN is counting on him to be The Great White Hope….

  7. Bluebloodtoo

Or was it Cal protecting Herro’s draft stock value by devaluing Herro’s own comments about his defense.

  8. Alleykat16

As Cal has said he can’t hide you here. He’s not protecting anyone. GM’s are not blind they can see if a kid can play or not. Hero is going to be the dark horse this year. Watching him play and watch some of his high school games this kid is going to be a player that’s not going to be around long. He plays with the best on both ends of the court. Can’t wait for the 5th. #GO BIG BLUE
