Columbia, SC mayor declares January 20 “Zion Williamson Day”

We knew five-star prospect Zion Williamson was a superstar, and today, Columbia, SC mayor Steve Benjamin took that stardom to a whole new level.

This afternoon, Benjamin announced on Twitter that he would be officially naming January 20, 2018 “Zion Williamson Day” in Columbia to celebrate the high school phenom’s college commitment.

Benjamin, a University of South Carolina graduate, added a #GoCocks tag to the end of his tweet with a ‘fingers crossed’ emoji to follow.

According to Adam Zagoria, South Carolina feels the addition of Brian Bowen increases their chances with the star forward. That being said, Clemson and Kentucky remain the rumored favorites.

In fact, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello says Williamson is down to “three or four schools,” with two of those options being Clemson and USC.

On SportsCenter tonight, Williamson said former Louisville forward Brian Bowen recently reached out to him about becoming a Gamecock.

Though Clemson has been receiving the most buzz recently, Williamson told reporters his recruitment is still ‘wide open’ and he has no idea how people came up with the supposed ‘final six’ schools on his list.

When it comes to recruiting with high-profile teenagers, no one truly knows where their minds are. There are endless whispers, sources, and rumors, but decisions go back and forth by the hour. With a week remaining until he officially announces, who knows how this recruitment ends.

No matter where he ends up, it’s pretty cool to see Williamson’s hometown celebrate his success on a platform this big. He’s one of the biggest YouTube phenoms we’ve seen in recent memory, and now he has his own day to show for it.

  2. Bobbum Man

    Lol @ Brian Bowen recruiting

  3. Smyrna_Cat

Brian Bowen will NEVER play at South Carolina!!

But I heard he offered Zion $50K to come there!!!!!!

  4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

    Come on down big man!

  5. Chacosrule

If Bowen and Williamson end up playing at usc, I might be done with basketball

    1. 502CodeRed

Why? They could both end up at UK and it wouldn’t increase their odds of winning the NC. I think we all know that at this point.

    2. Ez21

How would it not increase our chances at winning a title if an athletically gifted freak and a very good outside shooter whom are both 5 star recruits were to come to UK? I don’t understand your thinking?

    3. Eazy

UK has 8 National Titles and just won one in 2012 so your argument is ridiculous. Did you forget about the 2012 title. We are 35-16 against your trash basketball program btw. Why are you talking?

    4. Eazy

So, let’s get this straight. 502 is celebrating a banner that is coming down but won’t acknowledge UK won the 2012 title and beat UL in the final 4?! We have been to four final fours with Cal, too. If you don’t consider that successful you are an idiot. Not to mention we’ve gone farther in March 7 out of the last 8 years then Louisville. I can’t believe how ignorant Louisville fans are. We own you.

    5. Eazy

Even with that title UK owns your trash program. Go ahead and claim it. The rest of the world knows what a joke Louisville is. That’s why you can’t get any recruits and your university is the worst academic school in the power 5 outside of West Virginia. Speaking of national titles…how many does your powerhouse football program have?! Lol.

    6. Eazy

Automatic reply to the 502 bum from now on…8 > 2….35-16….facts

    7. 4everUKblue

Hey CodeRedNeck Bowen greatly increased the chances UofLittleBrother’s banner coming down. I think we all know that at this point. Say it with me….FBI FBI FBI!

    8. 502CodeRed

The NCAA doesn’t have to recognize Louisville’s banner just like they don’t recognize UK’s self proclaimed football championship. We are still claiming it regardless and we actually have video of the game. The funny part will be if UofL removes “NCAA” from the banner. But no it isn’t coming down. Just watch. lol

    9. EdC

OK genuine LOL at FBI chant. Bravo.

    10. RealCatsFan

LMAO at 502! Yeah, I bet you said the same thing about Memphis’ and UMass’s banners.

    11. 502CodeRed

RealCats – You might want to call UCF and tell them they cant do what they just did. LOL

    12. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

502, I can call myself Mr. Olympia, but that doesn’t give me 22 inch pipes. If UL leaves a banner hanging, they’ll be an even bigger laughing stock than they already are, and a bigger one than UCF. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

    13. 502CodeRed

Except you don’t have 22inch pipes and never did whereas the entire country watched the game happen. Maybe some form of telekinesis or mind control will make the world forget Now if they can just get rid of all the video evidence .LMAO

    14. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Except you used ineligible players. Therefore, no championship, and you know it.

    15. 502CodeRed

The game was still played. You and everyone on this site watched it. That works for me.

    16. ClutchCargo

The definition of a loser is a fan of University 6 who comes on a fan site of UK trying to talk shit. Just stop.

    17. 4everUKblue

CodeRedNeck getting rid of video evidence is one thing UofLittleBrothel IS good at. You really make it too easy.

    18. Bull Filmer

502 code turd is a typical uavel fan: 100% mindless and obnoxious, forever lil bro.

  6. dismore

Hope that mayor brushes the dirt off his knees.

  7. WildcatLarry

Sounds like a NCAA violation to me. Mayor acting as USC representative.

    1. RealCatsFan

It would be if UK was involved, for sure.

    2. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I wondered about that. I remember CM Newton releasing a letter to UK fans outlining fan’s responsibility when it comes to contact with recruits (who is a booster, what is allowed, etc.), and that was a long time before social media.

  8. Han

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel it’s a little inappropriate that Bowen is recruiting.

    1. Bull Filmer

Bowen looks like the mascot, all rooster head.

  9. BigBlue4EverUK

Looks like Zion staying in his home state and I’m pretty sure NCAA going to let Bowen play. S.C wouldn’t accepted him if didn’t think some good news will come.
