Random Fact of the Day: Derek Willis is Nationally Ranked Yu-Gi-Oh Player

I will start this by saying that I have no idea what I am talking about. But when we hear interesting tidbits, we share them. And on the day after Derek Willis’ birthday, I have been told that Willis ranked nationally as one of the best Yu-Gi-Oh players in the nation. What is Yu-Gi-Oh? Well, I don’t really know. So I will let Wikipedia tell you:

is a Japanese collectible card game developed and published by Konami. It is based on the fictional game of Duel Monsters created by manga artist Kazuki Takahashi, which is the main plot device during the majority of his popular manga franchise, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and its various anime adaptations and spinoff series.

So it’s some kind of trading card game. That works. Apparently according to the individual who let us know, “Derek will walk into places where people don’t know who he is and then play those people in the game…and he crushes them.” Will Derek be the best Yu-Gi-Oh player in the entire world of college basketball? One has to think he already is. I have no idea what that means but it is good to see people have hobbies outside the court. And if Derek’s production rises this season for Kentucky (and I genuinely think it could), maybe Yu-Gi-Oh will rise in popularity around the state…and if that happens, well maybe I will begin to have some idea what I am talking about.

With the suspicious insistence of ignorance on the topic, it seems clear to me that Matt not only is familiar with Yu-Gi-Oh, but is secretly a leader of the largest club in the tri-state area.

Come on Matt, he was the first one committed in the class and has been on the team for a year, you have to know how to spell his name by now. “Derek Willis”

Similar to Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh is a fairly well-known game in pop culture. Most millennials know what it is to some degree, so for MJ to write how clueless he is on the subject 4 different times seems like a cover up.

  6. Yu-Gi-Oh was my childhood

    Derek “Seto Kaiba” Willis

  7. Wordsmith

Willis ranked nationally as one of the best Yu-Gi-Oh players in the nation.

What you lack in Yu-Gi-Oh knowledge you make up for in redundancy.

Julius Randle was also a Rank 8 Hunter in Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate on the 3DS. He played it all the time before class.

Matt doth protest too much. Clearly you know what Yu-Gi-Oh is

    There were national rankings?

Any talk of making it an Olympic demonstration sport?

    Yu-Gi-Oh is a cool game.

I only know what this is because of my kid. I can’t figure this game out. My kid kills me every time.

Desire and effort to learn are probably part of my problem.

It’s like pokemon or magic the gathering. I used to play magic a lot when I was in middle school, but quickly grew out of it when I realized that playing magic and having a gf were mutually exclusive. All this means is that he’s a pretty smart guy. Its a strategy game, so to be nationally ranked at a strategy game (especially one this popular) means you must be smart.
