Rupp Arena Banners

Two new non-conference games have been announced since we previewed the schedule yesterday, so let’s run it back today with an updated look at what we know.

*******

Kentucky vs. Kansas
Champions Classic, Indianapolis, IN
Tuesday, November 18, 2014

The State Farm Champions Classic is back again in 2014, this time in Indianapolis. Kentucky will meet Kansas in Lucas Oil Stadium in the first game before Michigan State vs. Duke in the nightcap.

We’ll get a look at former UK targets Kelly Oubre and Cliff Alexander, plus Duke’s monster recruiting class.

Kentucky vs. Texas
SEC/Big 12 Challenge, Lexington, KY
Friday, December 5

ESPN announced yesterday that Kentucky has drawn Texas in its 2014 SEC/Big 12 Challenge game. The Cats will host the Longhorns in Rupp Arena as one of two marquee matchups in the challenge, the other being Florida at Kansas.

Myles Turner is coming to town! Rick Barnes too!

Kentucky vs. Eastern Kentucky
Lexington, KY
Sunday, December 7

One day after the Texas game was made official, UK announced Eastern Kentucky will make the short drive to Rupp Arena that same weekend. The Cats and Colonels will meet on a Sunday; game time to be determined.

Kentucky vs. Providence
Lexington, KY
TBD

Providence travels to Lexington in 2014 to complete the two-game agreement that included a game in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center last season. UK won in Brooklyn, 79-65.

Kentucky vs. North Carolina
Lexington, KY
TBD

The UK-UNC regular season rivalry returns to Rupp Arena in 2014. We last saw the Tar Heels in Lexington in 2011 when Anthony Davis swatted John Henson to take the game, 73-72.

Kentucky will look to avenge its loss in Chapel Hill last season.

Kentucky vs. UCLA
CBS Sports Classic, Chicago Illinois
Saturday, December 20, 2014

UK will meet UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic, a new three-year round-robin event featuring UK, UCLA, North Carolina and Ohio State. The Cats and Bruins will play in the second game at 3:30 pm in the United Center. It will be the two teams’ first meeting since 2006 when Ramel, Joe, Randolph and the boys lost in the Maui Invitational.

Kentucky @ Louisville
Louisville, KY
TBD

We’ll be traveling to the Yum! Center (groan) to watch UK vs. Louisville as part of the home-and-home series that dates back to 1983. The game will likely be on Saturday, December 27 or Saturday, January 3.

The “Foreign Trip”
TBD

Bahamas? Puerto Rico? TELL US ALREADY!!!!!

What about Texas Tech in Rupp Arena and a tribute to Tubby Smith? Let’s hang his name in the rafters.

    1. UKBlue1!

NO way. Tony Delk should be the next retired jersey.

    2. Yep

      I think that’s a fine idea.

    3. Justsayinf

You mean put the guy’s name in the rafters who was negotiating his next coaching stop mid season? And the guy that anointed his son starting PG when he clearly was not close to elite? And the guy that basically spent as much time recruiting as I do reading interior decorating books? I can go on. Nice guy but not an elite coach.

    4. CATS_FAN_BAMA

Not to many guys have won a national championship and not have their name somewhere in the arena. You can argue how or why he won it, but he won it.

    5. Huh^^

He brought precisely the same number of championships to the Commonwealth as Pitino and Hall. Are their names not in the rafters?

    6. CATS_FAN_BAMA

Wow. Really. That should say not “too” many.

    7. Huh^^

Oh that’s right, those guys were white.

    8. JustSayin

Huh^^ …. so your saying Tubby did those things because he was not white. Don’t bring race into the discussion please. The trajectory of UK toward the end of Tubby’s reign was down, down, down and you know it. Whose fault is that?

    9. Han

We all hated Saul Smith (mostly because he had a better brother who didn’t come, and people figured Tubby lost better PGs because he had Saul), but he actually put up pretty good assists numbers and was ranked 9th all time at UK.

But Delk and Tubby should both be in the rafters. Now that Tubby’s gone from the school he left us for, and now that we have another title since, we can welcome him back. He gave us a title, Rick’s players or not.

  2. Greg

Kansas, UNC, UCLA, Louisville, Providence plus Big 12 team- pretty solid schedule. I still think we should add quality mid and lower major teams. I don’t want to play anyone who finishes the season 5-25 in a poor conference

    1. Turner the Burner

They did that last year with Boise and EMU. They will probably do that again.

  3. Say what???

How is UK vs. KU not the nightcap game in the Champions Classic???

    1. Mc

IDK. Last season was worse when it was 1 vs 2, and wasn’t the nightcap. My guess last season was it was ESPN’s love with Wiggins/Parker. This season, I guess it’s their love for Duke. Maybe summed up, it’s their love for Duke.

I think Duke will be solid, but I think this class is overrated. Grayson Allen looks lost on the court. Maybe in a few year’s he’ll be solid. Okafor is legit. Jones is solid, but not incredible. Winslow’s a nice player.

      Time will tell.

    2. Real talk

Because more people would watch uk regardless. Last years uk game was the early game and it had higher ratings

    3. raccoon

idk, but I prefer being first. If we play second, by the time the game is over and I settle down and go to bed, it can be 1:00 AM. Rather get some sleep on a Tuesday night.

    4. Mc

I guess my perspective is different since I was at the games last year. I wished we had the nightcap.

  4. Official

Kentucky should win all of these games. I’m a little worried about the Kansas game, but for once, it being at the beginning of the year may actually benefit us because Kansas seriously has more roster turnover next year than we will. The Louisville game also is a bit of a red flag… we will obviously be much better than they’ll be, but it being the the YUM Center, big rivalry game… you never know what’ll happen.

    1. UKBlue1!

agreed on KU but I like the game. UL does not match up well with UK. I like our chances because it will be Smith, Rozier vs. Twins. Harrell and Maithang vs Town, Johnson, WCS, Lee, Lyles…..ect.

    2. Derp

@UKBlue1… Who’s this Smith you speak of at UL?

    3. UKBlue1!

      Chris Jones…sorry. Got confused

    4. Han

With the twins et al returning, plus the summer trip, I’m inclined to agree. UNC gives us fits, and Texas, Kansas and Louisville will not be easy, but we should be able to handle them unless the frosh cause chemistry problems. Remember how many of those teams are running with new Point Guards, while we finally are not. Hopefully the twins don’t lose the edge they developed (and Cal doesn’t forget how to coach them), the frosh all play in the summer trip and Cal already has a grasp of his rotation once the season starts.

If we make it through all of those, we’re coming hard for Florida especially. Bring out the Swamp People Fat Heads.

  5. tltaworl

    Too early for playing USF?

    1. YEAH!

^ this is what I am saying. Sorry Orlando, if you’re not with us, you’re against us, we people are crazy.

  6. Bledsoe's Biceps

Shaping up to be a real solid non-conference schedule overall. But I hope there are a couple more quality teams played at Rupp and not the typical endless list of cupcakes.

    1. oh its you again

Back on the wagon huh? Wait til we lose, you will be one of those idiots on here wanting to fire cal. Who was the coach you wanted again?….Tony Bennett? Lmao.

  7. H.A. Milton

Is there still a possibility that UK will be back in Brooklyn this year? I thought they were doing that pretty much every year…

  8. Jame223

Hopefully the NCAA awards our tough out of conference schedule with another 8 seed next year.

    1. Jo

It’s hard to tell, but if that was sarcasm OK…otherwise how about we not lose 9 games, 1 of them to South Carolina? I loved the tournament turnaround, but let’s be honest last year’s team was struggling.

    2. UKBlue1!

We might not be a eight seed but expect a stacked region of Wisconsin, UL and two more like them. I say with conference being perhaps as bad as its ever going to be next year we are looking at a 3 seed at best.

    3. Derp

      @UKBlue1… I hope you’re not serious? A 3 seed?! Did you’re mom drop you?

    4. What?

Ummmmm you’re crazy… how can you definitively say and honestly believe, at the point in the year, that a 3 seed is the best they can do? Talking about a pessimistic person… sheesh

    5. "Work" is a relative term

If Gonzaga can get a 1 seed playing their cupcake in-conference schedule, UK can.

  9. Will

I am hoping the UL game falls on 1/3/15. I may have screwed up and set my wedding date as 12/27…

    1. Jaime

That was not smart. Wedding should be after Derby and before Labor Day. That way you don’t chance it interfering with football or basketball. Even if it’s an off weekend, your anniversary will fall on games some years.

    2. "Work" is a relative term

But really, if the UK/ULoL game did fall on his anniversary and his wife didn’t watch with him, then it wasn’t a good marriage to begin with.

  10. Dave

The non conf schedule needs to be strong because other than Fla and maybe Ark and LSU the conf will once again be the worse of the power conferences. UK is suppose to play in Brooklyn. Probably end up being St Johns, maybe Seton Hall. I don’t think anyone ever gets the fact that you have to have a few breathers , like NKU or UNC Ashviille on the schedule as every game can’t be against a national title contender. Yes, you can play tough mid majors like Belmont and perhaps an in state team like EKU since in these cases we don’t have to give a return game to them at their place, it works. If you go undefeated in a bad conf, win the tourney and play well out of conf , it doesn’t matter that much if your in a bad conf or not. Fla did as did Wichita St. They both got 1 seeds. No way we go 40-0 but I will be suprsed if we have more than 4 losses.

  11. UKfanincincy

Why is Tony Delk’s jersey not retired? Simply crazy ?!

    1. Twingirl

      I so agree

    2. UKBlue1!

      last jersey retired was Mashburn.

  12. Twingirl

Geez, some people will never be happy

  13. KevinM

Delk jersey retirement – long overdue.

Could be the toughest schedule in the country – HAIL of a lineup!

For us to win all the big games would be unheard of.

    1. BobKYCats

      Delk and Padgett

  14. Musehobo

I know Matt poo poo’d the idea, but didn’t Karl Towns (or one of the other recruits) let it slip that they were going to Spain? Matt said it would be crazy expensive and mentioned a couple other reasons that he thought it was probably not happening. But maybe it’s not crazy since they are being hush-hush about it now?

  15. Tom Crean

Damit!!!! We’re elite. Why doesn’t anyone want us in the big games????
