On Christmas Day, Lexington Paper Remembers the Hate

calpitino

As most of you sit with your families and enjoy the happiness of Christmas morning, some are already looking to the big game on Saturday. We are reserving our UL hate for tomorrow and Friday (it is coming), but the Herald Leader wants to get you ready by looking at all the UK-UL hate that led to the rivalry itself. According to the paper, the hate really hit three different eras:

1. Joe B and Denny with Hall not believing UL was worthy of a game

2. Eddie Sutton’s famous “little brother” comment

3. Pitino and Calipari

In my view, the rivalry has never been hotter, mainly because of the severe dislike between the two coaches. Both of them love to make sure to get a shot on the other one and neither finds the other worthy of their concern. It makes the games vicious and the losses after the game (for whichever group doesn’t prevail) painful. The article is definitely worth a read and gives you a good primer for what is to come in the next couple of weeks (plus, it is cool to see that one of the major hating points between the two coaches came on our show).

UK and Louisville embrace the hate

Off topic but Sindelar beat out Barker for first team All State QB. Must really be something special.
Hope we can add Elisha to ourstockpile at QB next year.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS

Pitino brought us back in a big way. No matter what he does we should appreciate him, or maybe you don’t know.

Why does KSR keep pushing the hate with the Cards? Marketing.

Hate Indiana. Hate NC. Hate Duke.

Hate the Cards when we play them, but then don’t. They’re still Kentucky, Pitino is a KY hero–think about his choices–would you have done any different?

    KSR quit the BS.

    Long time fan,

    B

    1. yes

      Yes.

    2. C.....A......T.......S.......CATS!

Not crazy about your tag name “STHMJYB”…

However, I agree with your statement 100%.

Never in my lifetime was UK more “DOWN AND OUT” than after the “Eddie Sutton Debacle”…

No one could have brought us (UK) back from those depths, faster, quicker, cleaner, and smoother than Rick Pitino.

Lastly… all this talk about each coach hating each other, and spewing venom??? Really Matt???

I know I just saw a Coach Cal press conference, posted on this site within the last 72 hours, with Coach Cal praising Rick Pitino’s coaching ability, style, work ethic, and what Pitino’s return to the Commonwealth has meant to “Basketball inside the Commonwealth”.

No hate in that video?? So why manufacture, and provoke, the hate that is NOT THERE???

All for YOU right Matt Jones???

Give it a rest and enjoy the Christmas Cheer and Good Tidings….

      On…On… U of K!

    3. UK MANAGER

Screw uavel and the Horse they rode in on

    4. Moe

When Pitino was in Lexington, he was considered by 90% of UK fans as #1 God. Pitino is a great coach!!

  4. brain

I could never click a link to the lhl. Not in my DNA.

  5. MtnCat

I hate that Louisville is now considered our arch rival.
Have we sunk that low under Mitch Barnhart?
Tennessee will always be the arch enemy.

    1. Baby b

Ya we have sunk that low a national championship on 2012 and final 4 in 2011. You are a idiot

  6. Cats+Cal=Victory

Couldn’t agree more with #3 more. On this day when we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, a day of hope and joy and peace on earth, there is no place for all of the hate. #3 has said it all, and I too am a long time Cats fan.

  7. foolin

If they hate each other so much, why did cal go to h.o.f when pitino was inducted? .I heard a Espn podcast with Andy Katz at the start of the season where pitino complimented calipari several times. Maybe they’re not the best of friends, but the respect is there on both sides.. I think “hate” is a huge overstatement.

    1. peopleneedtogrowup

A large part of the “hate” is instigated by Matt Jones. He and the majority of people who listen to his ridiculousness need to quit acting like a bunch of two year olds and display better sportsmanship. And yes, there are fans on both sides who act this way but stooping to that level only makes it worse. Rivalry’s are one thing but when you tweet about getting your “hate/mocking of UL on” you seriously need to grow up.

  8. Foul shots

Has anyone watched UL this year? Their foul shooting is as bad as ours. Other than Blackshear and Smith, they are awful. Whatever team shoots better from the stripe win. I guarantee their will be 70 free throws on Saturday.

I guess here in the western part of the state we’re far enough away that I just don’t feel it’s that strong.I remember when I became a Kentucky fan I was told I had to hate Louisville,no real reason given just had to hate.We didn’t even play each other then but going with the high school way of thinking I did. After 30 + years when we play I want to win but other than that I don’t think like a high schooler anymore.I want what’s best for the state.I wish all of our schools were in contention every year and if we can’t win it I hope one of them does.
As for the stages of the Rivalry.
    1. Kentucky was being accused of not playing other state schools because of the chance of losing
    2. Think Coach Crum knew something ? Cause Big Brother soiled his pants soon after that
    3. Their dis(like) for each other , think they just want to win like any other game.

That being said come saturday Go Cats

SCREW LOSERVILLE, PITINO and anyone thinking UK fans owe him anything. He got into the HOF for his time at UK, not LOSERVILLE. He’s had double digit losses at LOSERVILLE 7 of 12 seasons. The only reason he started trying to coach hard again was because of CAL. I hated him and his snooty ass wife when they were here and even more now. And yes, there were 3 other better jobs he could’ve taken LOSERVILLE. I’m just glad he wasn’t the SLIME BAG at UK he’s been at LOSERVILLE, bringing in the GHETTO RATS, having affairs with the wife of someone who’s suppose to be a friend and lying anytime his lips move. LOSERVILLE got rid of Crum stating he’d lost control of the players, WOW. I only pulled against them when Crum was there when they player the CATS, now I pull for them to lose every game. So, here is one UK fan who doesn’t feel they owe SLICK RICK anything, he owes UK for the HOF, don’t know who to thank for making him such a slime bag.

  11. UK MANAGER

SEXTINO has always been a Scumbag uavel the sewer encouraged it.His ass should Have been fired over Sypher but Jurich had no balls.beat Lil Brother And run that trash back to Loserville

    1. Moe

      GO CARDS

  12. Old Cat

Let’s not get confused, Pitino did NOT make Kentucky, were great before he came and we have been great since he left. I could be said that Kentucky MADE Pitino.

  13. Participant

To repeat for the umpteenth time… “Dean Smith would never have coached at Duke.” Pitino knew the emotion that UK-UL evoked. All he had to do is remember Bill Keightley. He went anyway.

Pitino coached at Ky. Now he coaches at UL, our rivals.

    He deserves whatever he gets.

Why did you leave coach Rupp Out ? I remember when coach Crum was hired at U of L. Crum recruited A seven footer name Ricky Gallion. Coach Rupp recruited Rich Robey, Mike Phillps, and Danny Hall. a reporter asked Coach Crum “what do you think of Kentucky’s big men ” ? Crum I wouldn’t trade my guy for all three of Kentucky’s big men. They told Coach Rupp what Coach Crum said, Coach Rupp replied like he always did , That’s his opinion. Most of the time, when Crum said something about UK, Coach Rupp would say no comment
